Wazbert had one decent shot, a pass to the ball boy, a lay off and then got ran off the ball that led to a Cahill lunge, so an eventful 15 minutes. I knew Southgate wouldn't have the plums to leave him out altogether.
Seems impossible once he is in the 18 man list!

He has to be the worse corner taker iv ever seen... Makes sense how weak we have been on corners last few years when you remember Rooney and Jones were often taking them.
You obviously didn't see Hendo's corners earlier in tonight's match - As for Rooney he's always been a decent option for us as a medium/long distance free kick taker, so you can see the logic in having him take corners. Besides him who would you suggest takes them for England ? Tonight England were better with him on the pitch than off it, which is more of a reflection on how dire they were rather than his quality.

He was brought on late, but he was horrible tonight. Had to GIF this because it sums up how non-existent his hold-up play is and how physically shot he has been in the past couple of years.

Horrible is a tremendous overstatement. He passed the ball around, narrowly missed a shot on goal and set up lingard for a good shot too. Nothing special or game changing but certainly not horrible just because he gave the ball away in a gif.

quite pathetic .... on your part, to sink so low to assert your agenda.

You're right - terrible on my part to label his performance as horrendous, and it's more reactionary than rational. I expected a little bit more than what he produced though.

Strawman. I didn't connect that GIF with my thoughts on his overall performance tonight.

Rooney is clearly treated and judged differently from the rest and while he is not at the same standard as he has been in the past, his role has changed and is less of the main man in any team. I fully agree with the points made in this article --> http://www.espnfc.com.au/blog/tacti...position-but-its-not-been-a-problem-until-now

Not sure how Henderson can get this review from tonight's game and Rooney this from the previous game. Henderson was less than a 6 tonight for sure.

Jordan Henderson - 6
Some of his passing was a little bit wayward, but his commitment can't be faulted.

Wayne Rooney - 7
He was disappointing for me. Very deep in midfield, didn't really get forward and just coasted through the game. He tried a couple of passes that didn't come off and that's not his best position, for me. http://www.skysports.com/football/n...ratings-terry-butchers-verdict-on-malta-match

Why? Because I said he was horrendous? Or the fact that the GIF genuinely sums up his style of play these days? I'd be well-known round here if I did have one but unfortunately, I don't. Essentially, you inserted a straw man in an acrimonious reply - carrying on from your previous one which you can have a look at again - and I don't have time for that.

So the anti Rooney brigade can rejoice that their hatchet job is complete.

Congratulations to you all, it must feel great to have defiled a Manchester United legend.

That gif is a snapshot of one of Rooney's big problems that happens in most games, he can't protect the ball anymore and struggles to get turned which leads to him getting bullied off the ball easily or just shoving it back where it came from, thus killing attacks.

Yep. Also he's incredibly predictable in his movement, which makes it trivially easy to dispossess him if you press him.

And so it should be, he is an icon of English football who not long ago was saying he had nothing to prove.

But that gif pretty much epitomizes what is wrong with the current Rooney. A 23 year old Rooney would probably send that defender reeling while now he seem to lose any physical contest 4 times out of 5. Pace and power were the foundations of his game and those qualities seem to just have evaporated.

Honestly, i can't remember any footballer who has aged as bad as Rooney and for his own sake i hope he steps down soon so he can bow out with grace. Keep this up and he will taint his legacy

Why should we say that a 7/10 for him is disappointing but a 6/10 for Henderson is not? For all his fault in the attacking third, you would never see Rooney play a no look back pass to the CB. And if he did, more comment would be made than "Some of his passing was a little bit wayward".

Words can't express how tired I am of this whole Rooney discussion. I'm tired of the level of ignorance shown by ex pro's, ex-manager's, fellow footballer's, pundits, fans, who somehow think Rooney is being hard done by with regards to media criticism of his performances. It's long overdue. Three years of absolute mediocrity whilst being paid like Messi.

Any half decent game where Rooney accomplishes what just about every professional footballer does in his trade, and it's highlighted and exaggerated as a sure sign that he's improving. I can't abide the level of delusion with everyone surrounded by Wayne at the moment.

Finally, we have a manager with the sense (and intestinal fortitude) to make a clear and logical decision for the betterment of the team, to drop him.

Steve Bruce is terrible as well. Last night he was complaining that Rooney is a striker and that we've forced him into midfield. As if it wasn't fair. This when just last week Rooney said he wanted to play in midfield.

Again this isn't me criticising Rooney. I'm just amazed at how highly paid managers can be so wrong.

It's amaizing indeed but when they talk as pundits it's mostlly about politics. Little wonder then that pundits not related to United like Carragher or Shearer are more accurate in their evaluation of Rooney's performances.

I completely disagree with those saying on here that Rooney should be played as a No 9 because of his finishing ability. I think they do not understand well why Rooney wants to play in midfield. The reason is that Rooney lacks the attributes to make room for himself in the final third of the pitch, especially in the penalty box. He's painfully average in tight situations and gets dispossessed easily. His hold-up play is virtually non-existent.

I wouldn't mind Bruce saying he's a striker. The debate over his best position is really muddled I think by him just not being able to play any position at this level anymore.

It's the added fabrication that Rooney is being forced to play midfield. That's what I don't get. This is why Bruce and a few others can't manage at the top level. Their thinking just isn't clear and decisive enough.

this is how ridiculous the situation is, and has been for far too long.

2013: "I had to be a bit selfish and not play in midfield".
2016: "I might have to be a bit selfish as I want to play midfield. Oh yeah, new contract la"

Yorke's comments today were pretty ridiculous too, asking for Rooney to be given a chance before being dropped. Why do they feel the need to defend him to the point they hurt their own credibility? Especially Scholes who called him out as finished long before everyone else. It's just bizarre.

Speaking of ridiculous defences, where's Perrick Dubois to tell the media they are talking drivel and are just attention seeking?

Dropped England captain Wayne Rooney will receive “the respect he deserves” back at Manchester United, according to Jose Mourinho.

The 30-year-old striker returned to club duty earlier this week following an international break where he was booed by fans at Wembley three days before interim Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate left the country’s all-time record scorer out of his XI in Slovenia.

Mourinho is set to do likewise against Liverpool on Monday night, but the United manager insists Rooney can rely on the backing of the Old Trafford faithful after certain sections of the England support turned on him against Malta.

“He was not booed by Man United fans,” Mourinho said.

“To be honest, the last match when he went to the warm-up I was feeling Old Trafford was behind him and immediately supporting him during the warm-up before he came on against Stoke."

“I think at Man United he feels at home, at Man United he feels the respect he deserves. Not at Anfield, obviously, but he knows that here he is respected.”

Jose: "I did not ‘confuse’ Rooney - he’s first-choice"

Mourinho insisted in the summer that he would not play in midfield for United, but he did so in the Premier League against Watford.

He has also featured for England in a more reserved role, but Mourinho insists that “somebody” else is to blame for the “confusion”.

“If somebody confused him, it was not me,” he said. “He can play everywhere. That’s no problem. I think what you could hurt you did already,” he added, referring to the press. “I don’t think you can do more than what you did. So I think in this moment it is time for him to recover from what was done to him and the best place for him to do that is feeling like he feels at home here. I’m not saying that he is low – it’s: ‘OK, you can hurt me but you can’t put me down.’ I think he’s the same. At Man United he didn’t lose his place. Not at all, for me, he’s first-choice.”

When informed that Rooney has not started any of the last three games, Mourinho replied: “That’s my job. That’s a choice. I have 24 players.”

That has concerned me. Just hope it's Jose at his most Machiavellian, here. He can't risk it again, not after the last time he played him in a big game.

Just Mourinho playing the media here, no doubt Rooney stays on the bench, which he doesn't even deserve imo. So partially right if by first choice he means special treatment.
