His general point is correct and the tone he's delivered that in is absolutely fine too.

How is this still a thing? Neville literally gets paid to pass comment on football and they are reacting as if he's attacking them from nowhere with really personal insults. Karius has made this a thing and its only going to draw more attention the karius is shite narrative which was already pretty popular.

This whole thing is fantastically funny. If his intention was to take pressure off his players, then he's failed miserably.

Just putting it out there, Karius hasn't been anywhere near the bag of nerves Mignolet's been before. He's made mistakes and cost us some points but I've seen some truly dreadful keepers at Liverpool. Karius isn't at that level yet.

Thought it was worth mentioning as there seems to be a narrative that he's been a complete disaster. He's looked a bit dodgy once or twice but hasn't worried me like Mignolet has in the past. He just hasn't been the step up that we'd hoped for so far.

Has he made more mistakes in goals conceded than others (Mignolet etc.) regardless of his demeanour? I have only seen him a handful of games so wouldn't know.

I can think of one mistake against Bournemouth for Ake's goal and there's question marks over his keeping for the goal to make it 3-2. Then there's his positioning for the Payet goal yesterday. Apart from that I don't think he's done anything else that has led to the opposition scoring. You could argue that he could have done more for Palace's first goal but Lovren was more at fault there than Karius was.

There have been some moments where his distribution hasn't been spot on and a bizarre misplaced pass against Sunderland (he conceded a corner from a goal kick). I don't think he's been calamitous apart from that.

Here's what was said for anyone interested.
Klopp viewing this in terms of a Liverpool-United thing is a sign of him either playing to the 'Pool fans or actually succumbing to that particular tribal logic.

I see Die hipster has been infected by the self pity city. I fully expect us to finish above Liverpool.

I'm not sure how Klopp can single out Phil, given the shit he took after Euro 2000, and followed the advice he's just gave out to Karius, keep quiet, get on with it, rebuild, and he did rebuild himself.

It feels like karius has cost you way more goals already than mignolet ever did

Was it ok for Klopp to criticise the referee's performance yesterday when he's never been a top referee?

So here is what I see it:

L'pool got on great form and became title contender. Klopp and L'pool got smooth sailing from the media. Then some the defensive error cost them points. Ex Jamie felt precious about their chance of title contender if the points keeps being dropped by these defensive errors voiced his instructive concern. Nevs smelt blood (understandably his job is punditry) and had his share. Media found their new show and we're all here :smirk:

I repeat again it's the British media culture and the (side) entertaining drama aspect of PL.

The number of goals that Mignolet has cost us probably numbers in the 20's at least. Karius has been directly responsible for two, arguably three goals.

Basically. The rest of the media must be loving this. Daft of Klopp to play into their hands as it's created more pressure on us.

Looked shaky on West Ham's second goal too, like he was afraid of making a decision on what to do, so he kind of half closed down and half defended the space.

24 isn't young for a footballer.
At what age can he start criticising players? 27?
1) He's 23, which is still quite young for a goal keeper.
2) I don't see much concstructive criticism about what Neville said. It basically boils down to "yeah, he didn't have the best start so he's shit, lookt at that one and that one they are better". So much insight - wow. And I think this is what Klopp meant when he said that some pundits forget how criticism feels like when you're a player, because GN seems to completely miss the context.

I'm still not sure how smart it was from Klopp to blow up this minor issue to such big proportions, but I can see where he's coming from.

Klopp gives spikey interview and he's cracking up. Jose gives 356 consecutive spikey interviews and...just saying.

Criticism by the likes of Gary and Jamie has been OTT and they deserved to be called out for it.. but the words Klopp used were terribly misguided. If he kept his cool and said it is disappointing that Neville would be so quick to criticise when he himself knows what it is like to struggle in an alien environment, it would have been more subtle and classy. Instead he did come across as a tad rattled.

I'm not sure that he could have done more with that one. Antonio didn't connect as well as he should have and I think it caught Karius out. I didn't have a problem with his positioning on it personally.

Course it was. It was also ok for Neville to criticise Karius. It's also fine that Klopp protected his player by giving some back.

It's all fair game. It's only football.

Jose has always been spikey, it is part of his make up and he has won wherever he has gone despite being a miserable git. Klopp being spiky is out of character and a sign that he isn't comfortable.

True, there could have been no response back from Neville on that as well.

Anyone who didn't curl over in cringe at Phil Neville attempting to stick up for Gary hasn't a clue. Such a tit.

Karius has been shite. Gaz is calling a spade a spade(paid for saying stuff like that). Klopp is overreacting instead of laughing it off. And here we have german/dortmund posters defending that. Jawohl!

Klopp isn't overreacting, he's just joining in. He's got an asset who needs protection. This story is an echo chamber amounting to not much at all.

Of course Klopp sympathisers will defend him. Just like United fans defending Neville. Jawohl!

Can someone please summarize to me what happened with Klopp and that video ? I gotta admit that I was too lazy to watch it but mainly because I don't like that man.

Klopp is bringing up week old quotes though? If Gary said this straight after the West Ham match then maybe fair enough.
Klopp just seems like he's answering Carragher through Neville and being cowardly about it

Well no because we know better, but the media and the scouser fans like to portray him as a happy go lucky.. master of attacking football. They're building him up for a big fall and he's fallen into the trap with these unnecessary comments. Showing this side to him is fine, but it is not his general character.. he's at his best when he's relaxed and the free flowing football is on fire, he's less effective when stressed as we saw at Dortmund. Jose is usually at his best with his back to the wall and when the siege mentality is in play.

Bollocks, it's a pundits job to do this, and none of the pundits are shy on calling their own team out.

The fact that Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has been equally as critical of Karius as the Nevilles makes the targeting of them absurd. Klopp must be aware that Karius is not playing well, and is clearly aware that the media, in whatever way they expressing it, have picked up on that. Rather getting Karius to keep his head down, and dare I say it, get on with his job, Klopp was letting him go out and respond to his critics, who were all justified in criticising his performances, only for Karius to then have another mare.

In his attempts to protect Karius and deflect attention away from his performances, all he's managed to do is draw even more attention to them. GNevz and Carragher work on the same bloody show, so everyone who heard what Gary said, heard what Carragher said too, so the attempt at making it United vs Liverpool just doesn't wash.

De Gea was getting slated when he first signed for us, and a lot of the criticism was justified, but he wasn't allowed to go around making comments about the credentials of the pundits criticising him, and Fergie wasn't jumping at the opportunity to do so either.

Karius can't make mistakes, nor can he be criticised for his performances if he's taken out of the team. People might say Klopp's lost faith in him, but if he's got the right attitude and the ability Klopp believes he has, then after some time out of the limelight, ignoring media speculation and any comments aimed his way, he should be fine. If he hasn't then they're taking someone out of the team who's not cut out for the job.

No it isn't. Saying someone has been poor is normal, attacking someone saying they are not good enough in such a definitive manner .. this early into someones first season especially at the age the guy is at and in the goalkeeper position. Seems unfair and if I was a manager, I'd be pretty pissed off. Someone like Jose would lose his shit for sure.
