I wouldn't say it was a good performance, but as much as you can ask for. I don't really see what Everton would gain by signing him either. Surely he's off to the US or China.
Bit of marketing, hype and his experience. About it really. Decent dead ball at times too I guess.

Some really pathetic comments on here today. We all know how things sit now, it's tedious rehashing them again and again.

He is a squad filler, and after a 2hour game midweek and lots of injuries, he put a shift in.
Scored that key goal, and enabled the likes of Lingard/Rashford and Mik to not have to play 90mins.

I dare say we'll see him again v Swansea, probably for 90mins again

That goal alone will secure him a new 500k a week, 4 year contract.

Why not give him that for his final year, he's been robbing £250k for the last 4 years. Been a legend for us no doubt, from 18 to many years down the line but come on, its sad what he's become at 30-31, its like he's given up and is just strolling round the pitch in midfield pretending to be Pirlo or Scholes, trying to imitate so called Holywood Balls like Gerrard did in his twilight.

I'm not sure that's cost effective, let alone performance effective. Will he take a cut to his pay check instead of doubling it by moving abroad? Also, the marketing angle surely is on the slump when he can no longer perform. He's not a character like Eric or Zlatan, nor is he some pretty boy like Becks.

Did well for the goal but wasn't very good otherwise.

Still he's clearly off in the Summer and it's not like he was terrible today.

Nah I agree - Everton are mugs if they pay him a good wage for that kind of contribution.

Imagine if Zlatan had only scored 4-5 goals this season but we tried to justify it (the wages) by bigging up his dressing room influence.

I was just delighted seeing him play for one of his last ever appearances. A goal is just

Who needs rival fans when you have guys like this who support United?

Mate, the Liverpool fans were posting like that en mass about their boyhood, blue eyed boy slipper wearing slip up artist Ste Gerrrrrrrraaaaaaaard. They were sick and tired of him, wanted him moved on and millions spent on a proper replacement. Why is it United fans have to put up with our equivalent, and he wasn't even our youth player, like Gerrard, he was Evertons. We just bought him.

Amazing how you always get the patronising 'you ain't a proper fan' flannel. Do me a favour. Rooney, if he was roll around WBA, Stoke or Leicester would be more at home than he is playing games for Mancester United. He wouldn't get in the Madrid, Barca, Bayern, Chelsea or anyones teams. He's done weather you like it or not. And that door-matt of a girlfriend of his, like they all seem to be when £££'s and fame is a stake (Terry, Giggs) will have to put up with him moping about the house when the money starts drying up and the papers click much less.

Bottom line? No other big team/big club will have him and he talks less English than Carragher to get on TV without getting mocked.

Did well by his standards this season. He also had a point with the referee, just laughable stuff at times, with every little thing from us being a foul and they could do the same thing and get away with it.

It's been pretty hard to be clinical in front of goal for us the whole season. If he keeps scoring when he plays, I honestly wouldn't mind him playing complete shite. Goals are all we need going into this last stretch.

That's him doing his job. I don't want a captain that keeps his mouth shut when we're getting hard done by.
Berating the referee to the point where he receives a booking for it is "doing his job?" What?

Many fans criticise Rooney just because he couldnt become our Messi or Ronaldo. He became a club legend and has a well deserved place in United history. Get over it Rooney haters.
How is the hater tag still being used with regards Rooney after the last two seasons?

I've got another phrase for us "haters." We're now called the "people who got it right."

Pretty conclusively let's be honest. Slowly but surely, the crowd gave in to reality.

Criticise him all you want. Everyone agrees he's past it and doesn't deserve to be anywhere near the lineup but that comment was unnecessary and OTT.

I don't like doing the whole told you so thing but when the agenda and hater stuff is still being chucked around. Come on.

How much more evidence do fans need that when posters were saying he was finished it wasn't to do with any agenda. It's because he is.

Did alright, looked a bit gassed by the end of the game, no chance he starts against City. I'll be glad if he can chip in with a couple of goals by the end of the season though like today.

He was up for it, he doesn't have the legs clearly and offers little on the ball, but his awareness to grab that goal was important.

It's weird. I hope we win the games we need to win by almost whatever means. I don't really want Rooney to start playing ok and stick around next season though. I think he's been a big problem at the club during the malaise and it's time to move on. He was decent today. Not 300,000 a week decent but then again he hasn't been for years.
So what you're saying is, you want a United player to fail?

If Zlatan doesn't stay, Rooney being here in the same role as this season is fine really. He's barely played so that's exactly what we all want right? He's only played when everyone is tired and he's a good enough option for that.
It's not really fine when his contribution is usually either minimal or detrimental. Bundling home one goal today doesn't change that. Nothing has changed, he still isn't good enough and if it wasn't for an injury crisis he wouldn't be starting. That doesn't make him worth being kept around for £300k a week.

Not sure i agree with this. Zlatan has contributed in goals and his holdup/link play is far better than Rooneys. If Zlatan does go i rather we get someone else to replace Rooney aswell.

Still managed to look poor despite scoring in an easy tie. Played most of the game with his mouth.

That said, we need him at the moment, any body we can get frankly, and if he can chip in with the odd goal it will be great,y appreciated. Hope he has a big winning goal in him before he bows out.

Yeah lets have a past it squad player who barely plays for 300k per week, not like we can use the money elsewhere

Your obsession with rooney is really something.

He put an effort in today, I can't fault him for that. Really pleased with his goal that cemented our win.

Every game he plays though reaffirms the view that he's done at this level. Very slow, many miss kicks (even the goal), many bad controls, many slips. The game seemed too fast for him most of the time. He has a sweet right foot, but no time to do anything with it at this level.

Feel Ibra's injury may well force Mou to keep Rooney for another season
No fecking chance. We can go buy a 30 goal a season striker and pay him almost half of the money we currently pay Rooney. His pay packet is too huge to be kept on. He needs to be moved on and the money re-invested.

That slip when Jesse played him in was poor Wazza's post Fergie career summed up in one moment :(
Yep

I really wish the idiot hadn't pushed for moves to city and Chelsea over the last few years.

It's really tarnished his relationship with our fans. He should be going out a club and fan legend

I've accepted he's off but with the Zlatan injury, if Jose does want to keep one player to play when no one else is fit/fresh, he's an okay option. I don't understand the fans and their obsession with how much a player is paid so I'll ignore the 300k bit. Anyway, I think we all know he's not staying anyway. It's going to be Griezman and one more.

He isnt an okay option when you can get someone better for 1/10th the price. As for not caring about wages, going through your posting history.

It's really going to be so frustrating when Nani leaves. He's one of the few flair players that we have and the only winger in the squad who can take on and beat his man regularly. It's really shocking to imagine that he won't be at this club next year whereas Young and his 100k a week wages and Valencia will continue to be our first choice wingers.

From a financial point of view, yes.

But playing level wise I think Benayoun is slightly better than Cole. He's been Liverpool's best player after Torres even the past season (when he was playing atleast). I doubt Cole will be much of an upgrade on Bennayoun performance wise tbh.

And even the free signing won't exactly be free. Besides his 90k a week wages they also must be paying some kind of signing on fee to get him.
His demands for 90k a week would surely put off a lot of people.Would have liked to see him here at United but at those wages it just makes no sense.

He would end up being our 3rd highest earner or something and he's not good enough for that.
Yeah probably. Which is why it's not exactly a "free" signing. High wages for him which will lead to others like Torres and Gerrard and Carragher wanting more.
80k a week is very very reasonable. Even if he wanted 90k or 100k a week it would be worth it. People din't mind Cole getting 90-100k. Sneijder would surely deserve that much
Seems like you cared about wages before rooney turned to shit. So explain to me wr8, how it doesnt make sense to have joe cole here, back in the day, for 90k as a rotation option but you are more than happy for rooney to play the same role at 300k per week.

Rooney told Sky Sports: "It was a high getting to the semi-final in Europe but it was a blow to lose Marcos and Zlatan, two very important players for us and we are all gutted for those two players. We wish them a speedy recovery but that gives other players a chance to come in and try to stake a claim for a place in the team.

"The lads who have come in, myself and Anthony, we’ve given the manager something to think about.

"We’ve come in, played well and both scored. It is great for the team to have competition for places and that is what we need from now until the end of the season."

Rooney became United's record goalscorer earlier this term, but has seen his game time sharply reduced under Mourinho.

And he revealed his frustration at seeing his chances limited further by injury.

"You want to play football and I liked being back out there today," added Rooney. "It was important for the team to win today and set up a big game on Thursday, but of course to score today - it’s always great to be on the scoresheet.

"I’ve had injuries and you want to play of course. Just as I am getting my getting chances coming off the bench I’ve picked up a few injuries which has been frustrating. Nothing big, but small injuries which have set me back in terms of choices for the team.

"I’ve come back, I feel strong and thankful to play today and to score."

United will be without Ibrahimovic, Rojo and Juan Mata at the Etihad Stadium, but Rooney insists United will be up for the occasion.

He said: "It’s two good teams, great teams and it is a massive game for the city as always, there is a fight for the top four and us and City are both in that fight. It is a big game for both of us and we’ll be ready."

Regardless of the goal, if we tie our hopes of UCL football to him once again, we are done. We can't depend on him, he should not be playing at this level anymore.
