Thinking about it now, I'm a bit bothered by the price since he only has what, 2 years left on his contract ?
Welcome to 2017 market, mate.

We would never get him at any price lower than this. What were you expecting Chelsea was trying to do all the previous month ?

You either pay or end without a striker like Chelsea.

Think 75m is fair really when you include United tax and the fact he is classed as homegrown.

Ultimately it's supply and demand. CFs with such a proven goalscoring record are not easy to come by in the current climate. Juventus ended up paying 75m for a 29 years old Higuain and even an unknown quantity like Belotti has a minimum release of 88m, just 1m behind the most expensive player in the world Paul Pogba.

Infact the more I think about it the more I think the price is really good all things considered.

I fear we could still be none the wiser this time next week
Even the chelsea journo that's been pushing "lukaku to chelsea" for close to a year now has said he expects to wake up and hear "Raiola got his way".

Chelsea "matching the bid" and all the reports about "poor conte" is all face saving for the media. It's about shifting Chelsea's failure and that media narrative onto Raiola and Lukaku.

They had no reason to spend so much on pogba when they still had Modric and Kroos.

We needed Pogba more and were willing to spend more.
Since when has that stopped Madrid from spending big on a player with the hype of Pogba. They literally just shelled out 45 mil on a 16 yr old with very few senior caps.

Didnt say they didnt want Pogba but that not as much as we did and were not willing to spend as much money

The attack is a different situation with Benzema not performing well, Bale out injured too often and CR getting older. They are more willing to splash on a shinning toy in attack.

With his age, Mbappe would still be a cheap signing at even 150m if he lives up to his potential, as that would be 10-15yrs of top quality and potentially Messi like numbers.

If Mbabpe at 150m is a cheap signing then United have unearthed the new Solskjaer here at half the price!

We already create so many chances as it is, if we sign someone who can really put a cross in we'll score so many goals this season. If Shaw learns how to whip in a decent cross, or we buy someone like James (rather not deal with Madrid though), we're gonna be lookin mighty fine

Messi-like numbers? The guy has talent, but that is the pure overrating of him. Anyone who buys him will take a huge gamble, no matter how much he will go for.

Surely Chelsea can't hijack the deal now, right? :nervous:
There were a flurry of chelsea reports after the "bid" news, then it all returned to "lukaku to sign with MUFC"

No one is saying he's going to chelsea.

However, they are not willing to match the fees Lukaku's agent Mino Raiola would earn if the forward joins United.
http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/40540231

it's all a media narrative, it's to shift the media stories away from "chelsea failure" to "Raiola is an evil man and lukaku is greedy".

Chelsea have failed. MUFC will get the deal done.

It is a huge gamble, but his numbers are already better than Messi at the same age.

Chelsea PR in full overdrive. Can't believe Chelsea being the respected club that everyone wants to play for and United being for mercenaries narrative is getting the time of day. The fecking cheek of it.

Messi wasnt a regular starter for Barcelona at the same age so cant be a fair comparison. Rooney at the same age has similar numbers, and thats with being played in different positions for us.

Yeah, that's what it is. If they were getting him, it'd have been done by now.

Come on. It's not hard. Lukaku prefers Chelsea. But chelsea won't pay that amount which is absolutely taking the piss. Everton want united because of the money and so does his agent. Lukaku isn't exactly upset at moving to United, at the end of the day he wants a step up. But the idea this is a 'failure' on chelsea's part is a joke. They didn't want to spend that money on him. So they didn't. If they wanted to, he would have signed for chelsea by now.

Simon Stone agreed with Matt Law that chelsea offered to match, but then Law went full salt mode and said Raiola was the big bad guy ruining the deal. it's pretty obvious chelsea are briefing their mouthpieces to save face.

I said something like this a while ago somewhere here on this board: at the rate the market is going, Everton would be more than happy to keep him for another year if they don't have a good offer. Reason is a good season from Lukaku & impressive season for Everton (he needs to try his best for the upcoming WC) would be worth alot than selling him 20mil, 30 mil below the price range they want. Even with one year contract, Lukaku can still fetch up a good price given the lack of quality forward around the world, and if Lukaku continues to perform, there would be more clubs to compete for his signing. Clubs would be desperate as they don't want Lukaku just run his contract down & goes to a lucky bastard of a club. Lukaku is a PL homegrown so again would cost a bit more. Back to the first point & key point: market rate. It is crazy now. There is every chance it would get crazier next year.

Come on. It's not hard. Lukaku prefers Chelsea. But chelsea won't pay that amount which is absolutely taking the piss. Everton want united because of the money and so does his agent. Another ITK

If he prefers Chelsea that much, there is like a month & half he can wait to pressure Everton to lower the fee. It's not like today is August 30th & he needs to escape Everton at all cost.

You need to understand Chelsea. Conte is a massive cry baby who sees himself like the Michelangelo of football. You don't force such genius of football to modify plans especially since he signed with Chelsea purely because they promised him to buy all the toys he want.

Not even talking about Mbappe. Just bringing forth this notion that Madrid didn't spend big on Pogba because of the cost being so high. That has hardly ever stopped Madrid.

Interesting play by us if it's true we've matched Lukaku's transfer fee and wages but not the agent fee - perhaps it's a preconceived plan to expose the corrupt nature of agent involvement?
Direct from The Shed End. Chelsea and Roman will be the leading light against agents greed in football.

Errr...

http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/39526917

The Premier League paid £174m to agents, up from £130m, with Manchester City being the biggest spenders (£26.3m) ahead of Chelsea (£25.1m) and Manchester United (£19m).

Yes, keep on deluding yourself that a club will let go of their top target because they refused to pay the agent fees which United is paying(i'm guessing the difference is around 5m) by all accounts, Chelsea have matched the bid of around 75+15m. The whole joke in all this is your post.

Then why have they matched our bid? Or is it Monopoly money which they flashed to Everton?

That's not how football works though. If that were the case, Rashford would be rated at more than 100 mil because he has better numbers than Kane at similar ages.
