Crap today. Highest paid player in the league. Has moved martial our form player out of his best position. Ugh. What is our plan? It’s a team of individuals.
It’s grand if he’s some punt but he’s not. He doesn’t need to get used to the league either. Yes he’ll play better than this but I truly honestly worry about our plan and general direction. Spending money for monies sake isn’t going to fix us.

Mou's approach was what killed Martial today ... not Alexis.
We should not play 4-2-3-1 against attacking teams. Alexis as LW only when Martial is injured.

Why do we buy Sanchez if Mourinho plays him on the left? Martial was excellent on left side last few games and drop him to right side because of Sanchez.

Sanchez needs a functional midfield behind him. If you expected him to win games for you single-handedly then you're in for a surprise. And he was always going to play from the left, hes your best player, he should get to pick his position. FWIW martial was pretty good on the right, better than Sanchez would've been there.

Feel sorry for him. First game with supposed strong line up and almost everyone was terrible. He ended up play a different role than he is supposed to be: played as our play maker as well as linking up play, where he should be closer to goal receive passes. Can't describe his performance as good, but it's promising.

Should have played him in a front 3. Our attackers rarely look good against high-level opposition in a 4231. Spurs didn't really let him get into the game, fouling him almost every time he got the ball.

This is the big concern.
We know Martial isn't at his best over there, and Sanchez we all heard can play all over.
Then to mix the two up seemed strange.
To be fair, Martial did look a little threatening on the right. He had two really good runs in the first half, one effort which he skied over and the other forced a save out of Lloris. But yes, I agree, Martial on the left makes too much sense. I've been saying it for quite a while now, but I'd like to see Sanchez central and Lingard on the right. That brings more balance to the team I reckon, both when attacking and in defending the full backs runs.

I actually think he was decent but he was fouled almost every time he managed to do a quick turn for a counter or when he got past a player. I think they had clear instructions from Poch.

At fault for the OG from what I saw. Chasing shadows in the middle of the pitch like a headless chicken leaving Trippier in acres to put a dangerous ball in.

The worst part is it looked like Spurs gameplanned for it and baited him into the middle before a quick 1-2 and switch out wide.

His energy and pressing are great in theory but he needs to learn his role out of possession. In Mourinhos setup the wingers have to be disciplined in tracking the FBs.

Jones does his job like anybody that has ever played football would know and Sanchez being there wouldn't be remembered.
Sanchez has less than 1% responsibility for that goal.

I can't agree with your line of thinking on this.

I'm not talking about Sanchez in particular but most goals have more than one mistake leading up to them. To blame the last mistake is illogical because if the player's at fault before the last mistake did their job the last mistake would never have happened. Therefore, Jones, in this case, wouldn't be remembered for the OG.

Obviously Jones fluffed it but Trippier is a good crosser and on another day gets it past Jones and onto Kanes' head. Trippier provides loads of assists for Spurs and it was Sanchez responsible for tracking him. Instead hes chasing the ball in CM like a schoolkid.

He's obviously a cut above most of our other players but he needs to reign in his God complex and trust his teammates to do their job. The CM was obviously light and couldnt press enough but its up to the manager to change it not for players to abandon their position and try to do everything themselves.

He was clearly frustrated at Arsenal and it's carrying on with us. He's like that bellend at 5 a side who had a trial once and thinks it entitles him to berate his teammates and try to do everythng himself.

Couldn't watch the game and I was one of the few who didn't understand the general hype with Sánchez on this forum but we'll, it doesn't make sense yet to judge him after such poor team performance.

He got something like 30 goals and 20 assists for Arsenal last season and was always a thorn in our sides when he played against us.

The forum is absolutely unbearable after a loss.

He was the only one that looked like trying, running, trying to get the ball back. evey other player (midfield onwards) downed tools.

Spot on.

There was an instance in the second half where he was single handedly trying to chase down Tottenham players, he was moving into other players areas of the pitch while they just stood and watched. Whatever Sanchez does on the ball I think will be forgiven if he continues to put the effort in like he did at Yeovil and last night.

Great example to others.

I love jose but why coaches teying to invent hot water sometimes? Our 3 best players are alexis, pogba and martial. So shape you squad to get the best of them.
We need to play 433 with pigba on the left without much defensive duties, martial on the left and alexis on the right. He is good on the right nearly as on the left.

I was really hoping when we signed him that we were going to play him on the right side of a 4-3-3. If Jose is planning on keeping him on the left of a 4-2-3-1 then I am really disappointed that we signed him over a right sided attacker. Yes he is a class player, but it is a position we didn't need strengthening. It has been obvious many times that Rashford and Martial do not play well when moved to the right. More of a problem created than one solved if it continues.

I just find it weird Jose still decided to play him on the left and shoehorn Martial onto the right, even after he spoke about how flexible he was in attack.

The only logical reason other than "Sanchez is above in the pecking order" is that Jose knows he's a hard worker and thought he'd work harder on that left flank to cover for Young whereas Martial would get ample cover from Valencia.

Obviously that didn't work out so well.

Agreed, I was pretty excited pre game when the line up was shown, that quickly turned to dread when I saw Martial line up on the right.

For what it's worth I thought Martial actually played quite well on the right in the first half, but it was clear he isn't fully comfortable there.

Maybe Jose really didn't have a "plan" for this transfer, just signed the player and will think about it after.

He definitely got it tactically wrong though, Sanchez didn't want to track Trippier at all and we left him miles of space, a risky move. Should have left Martial on the left from the start.

True, that does make some sense in theory. Should have just gone with a 433 or played Shaw if he was that concerned about Young though.

He had like 3,4 trainings with the team and there's already a panic about him here. Mental. Also he was shifted from the left in the 2nd so don't know where all this panic about him playing on the left comes from.

Martial's goal-scoring record recently has been good but his overall level of performance has been poor. In fact, his performance yesterday was no worse than what he's usually produced in recent weeks. The only difference was that he didn't score a screamer out of the blue. He certainly hasn't performed at a level where he was an absolutely nailed on starter in his position of choice. In fact, he arguably only merits a start at all because Rashford has been playing his worst football since he first got into the team.

wasted on the wings especially with our style of play, has to play as a number 10 or false 9 instead of Lakaku

Harsh IMO. He's been a threat all season in terms of creating chances and getting in goalscoring chances himself. The game against Stoke he was poor before his goal then class after it. Thought he was class against Everton throughout, playing as the striker and that it was one of our most complete halves of football all season as the balance felt right throughout the team. Against Burnley as well he was pretty much the only player in our attack that put in a good performance, while pogba and the rest of the team struggled. He hasn't been amazing throughout the course of every game, everyone has poor spells in games now and then, but he's been the most in form player in our team counting overall performances and of course including him scoring and creating. He also has the best rate of getting in good scoring chances or creating good chances this season, by far. In fact I think he's one of the top 5 or 6 players in the league this season at that.

Edit: Wrong on that last stat. Sanchez is 6th, Martial is 8th (just behind Son, in front of Lacazette, not on the list because he was just under the minutes player but would probably be on it after the last game)

I don’t get it, I was actually annoyed how he was pretty much the only one trying, how can people be on his back, he barely had few training sessions and was our best player yesterday. He was also the only one creating after we conceded the first goal.

Hard to put a finger on what made him so invisible. We play a more freestyle attacking system than Arsenal so maybe there's the adjustment factor of learning to impose himself in a different system.

In the first half he started left but seemed to have freedom to drift. Can remember the 1st 20minutes where Young would get the ball on the left wing with no Sanchez around. Then he started sticking to the left the rest of the half but had little space to run into. it's not easy sharing wide positions with a fullback who cant overlap and also wants to cut in.

Can't even say anything about his second half. I didn't notice him except for the few occasions he would press or get fouled.

Get him a fullback that can overlap and a striker that can link up and bring him into play. That left wing position is a pothole if your partner is Young

Think he had a good game yesterday. It will take some time for him to get adjusted with our play, but i think he's going to be awesome for us.

Good to see I wasn’t completely imagining the fact we looked great between their first and second goals. The less said about the rest of the game the better but that opening blitz does bode well for the future.
