You think Celtic and the Scottish league is Shaw’s current level? Tierney is good but people thinking he is any better than Shaw are in for a fecking shock if we were to sign him.

No doubt he will eventually in time get to hopefully a very high standard but he’s not at the level of Shaw currently sooooo....
Tierney is a better defender and a far more incisive attacker. He has a soft spot for United and is gettable at under 30 mil. Not to mention that he's ambitious and would work his bollocks off.

Darmian's arguably had more good games for us. Remember his first 2 months? Was amazing.

He was pretty poor against Milan. I’m struggling to see how he can make an impact for this club, it’s a shame but that leg break fecked him.

Can't remember the last time I saw him make a successful aerial cross. Honestly think he's worse than Valencia at it.
He’s comfortably worse at it. He’s about two assists in his whole career. Sooner he’s replaced the better.

He's not a good footballer, and he doesn't have good training habits. Not the best combo.

He is nowhere near United standard. The fact that some want he & 'TFM' to be our starting fullbacks honestly baffles me. For all their flaws (and they have many) Young & Valencia are far better options.

He's not been great at all in pre-season so far. Still no end product. He's an absolute shadow of his former self from before the injury. If Jose really does think that him and Young are enough for the coming season, I just hope he sees something in Shaw that we don't. Up to this point, since the injury, he hasn't been able to turn thing around and doesn't seem to be showing any signs that he can do that. I'd get him either loaned out or sold, and bring in either Alex Sandro or Alex Telles.

It could wind up an expensive summer for us if we were to still but a left back, a centre back and a right winger, but if we moved on Rojo, Shaw and Darmian then that's decent money back to add to the good price we got for Blind.

No, he wasn't. People were desperate to sign anyone to replace Valencia and kid themselves. Told it at the time. The moment it became clear for the umpteenth time that we rely on our full back physique more than anyone, it was 'mediocre'.

The myth that seems to have started is that if Shaw could stay fit he'd a brilliant left back. If only that were the case

That’s absolute bollocks, Darmian has never been amazing for us. Shaw actually was man of the match in some game during that good spell in the winter. People just love to rewrite history and chat shit.

Pretty sure Darmian had a few MOTM himself. Calm down.

Did not watch him but I'm not surprised to hear he was rubbish.
He's a lost cause.

Shaw has really disappointed me this pre-season. No issue with fitness this time, he looks healthy - he just doesn’t look very good.

Did he? I feel those decent 4-5 performances he had in his first month are blown out of proportion. It’s been a long time in all honesty I can’t remember. But Darmian has been absolute dross in 90% of the time here, Shaw at least has shown potential.

There's just nothing special about him. Might be a good squad option but when you watching him play there's nothing to make you think he will eventually develop into a top LB.

He won a Motm in his first game at Villa.

It just shows how fickle fans and the media are. He's won MOTM awards more than once (against Spurs being another example to the Villa games), was voted by fans as Utd player of the month (August 2015), and even Adam McKola and the FullTimeDevils crew called him a class act ().

These days everyone hates him. Same deal with Shaw.

The way some people harp on about a few performances from years ago is quite sad.

Maybe it's me but even fit he just looks like a big unit. Proportionally he looks like those blokes who skip leg day and looks a little top heavy. He looks like he's lost a yard of pace too.

I personally think the problem lies in the 6 inches between his ears rather than what is hanging over or under his belt.

Not seen his performances in pre season but last year in the u23 games he just did not engage with his teammates and seemed to just say, "well I did my bit right"

Not convinced he will make it.

You need to realize that he didn't really play a lot of football in the last 2 seasons, of course he doesn;t look very good.

For him to look good he still needs to lose about 5kgs(even if he's quite stocky) and get a 4-5 month run in the 1st eleven without injuries. Questions are:
-> Can he stay fit for half a year?
-> Can we give him such big of a run in the starting lineup?

Other than that, dunno what fans are expecting for him. He's rusty, as he should be for a 23 year old that had an atrocious injury and didn;t play more than 10-12 games after it.

If he can make it here or not it's just an assumption atm. We can all say it with certainty only after him starting 10-15 games in a row, which is quite unlikely. Does he poses the quality or the talent for a UTD left back, yes, surely, is he still a bit unfit and has some brain dead moments, yes, surely, but that's entirely normal.

I;m baffled how people judge such a player on a 1-2-3 game performance. Remember in the winter when he had 1-2-3 good games, we thought we had Marcelo right here.

People need to relax ffs.

I feel the some people are clutching at straws, when constantly bringing up that injury when defending his poor performances.

Valencia had a similar injury.

At a later age. And in his first full season back was our POTY.

I really do think people refuse to blame the main cause of all of Shaw's troubles. Himself.
Yeah, maybe but he was playing really well before that, maybe it’s more in his head than in his leg.

It's not just the attitude and fitness, it's the fact he looks like your generic run-of-the-mill LB when we do rarely see him in action. He's got no attacking threat about him, yes he makes forward runs but his crossing is non-existent so what's the point?

I don't see this unlocked potential some are seeing, to me he's no better in general than Darmian or Blind. Worse actually - those two are actually consummate professionals in great physical condition.

Valencia was a machine though.

I often think about what it must be like to play against a player. Smalling for instance, not a threat on the ball, but rarely loses it... not incredible marking at corners... but 1v1 forget about it.

When I imagine coming up against either Shaw or Young, I know which of them is going to give everything they have.

I was at the game last night sitting maybe 50 ft from the United bench. During the first water break, Mourinho was all over him, noticeably chewing him out. While I arrived a little late, thought he was pretty poor from what I saw. Couple promising attacks down the left side died as soon as he got the ball.

I'm glad that the penny is dropping.
I've been saying this for a while and have copped a lot of flack over this.
The more game time Shaw gets, the more it will dawn on fans that Southampton is his correct level.

BTW, if anyone wants to see a young player who wants to succeed (and support), look no further than Andreas Pereira .
That guy is busting a gut to break into the first team and I do hope that Jose puts him in our first team. And unlike Martial and Shaw, who need an arm around their shoulder to play well and work hard, AP, will put in a shift, regardless.
Absolutely. He's just your typical overrated English defender. He's going the same way as Smalling and Jones. Only now has the penny dropped with Jones but how long did it take? He's been here for 7 years and has never been undisputed number 1 at CB. We can't make the same mistake with Shaw. Only time I have been impressed was 3 or 4 games under LVG. It's not enough after 4 full seasons. Blind showed more at LB than Shaw ever has and even yesterday I thought Darmian was slightly better. I had hopes that he would recover that form he had just before the injury but it seems that it was just a purple patch and nothing more.

Is not in shape after seeing him in person last night. Also went directly to the dressing room with a trainer after he was subbed out. Inevitable it seems.

Just no purpose or thought going into his build up play. Darmian was much more composed and reliable as a wingback than Shaw last night. Neither are wingbacks, but we've seen Darmian play a wingback a lot more than Shaw and at minimum he's much more reliable than Shaw.

His shot that was saved by Reina was good though. If Mourinho trusts him enough to start against Leicester, hope he puts in a good effort towards a 3 point performance.

I have completely lost hope in Shaw getting anywhere close to the level expected at United. Even now, I wouldn't mind a deal for Rose with Shaw going the other way.

Typical new signing effect. I'm pretty sure if you watch those games back Darmian would look the same player he is now. I remember questioning his lack of attacking contribution at the time but he got overhyped because most were just desperate not to see Valencia at right back.

On Shaw, he's still miles away from his pre injury form. He was never particularly effective in attack but was quicker and more agile than he is now.

The big problem with him is that he has no crossing whatsoever and in general has no game whatsoever when he reaches the final 3rd. He dwells on the ball

Shaw is only staying because we can't get another left back in for whatever reason. I'd spent a fair few pounds that he'll start the season for us and when Jose feels Young is rested enough he'll be out the side and we'll be playing Young at LB for another season.

Ah but United are putting that nonsense behind them, don't worry.

Yeah. He had all the same fitness problems and constant injuries and committment issues before the leg break. Leg break was unfortunate, but ultimately does not have any bearing on how he's been last season and this pre-season.
Players have come back from much worse injuries than a leg break.

He has zero end product. But that's always been the case.

If we're going to use him, it has to be as a ball-carrier at leftback, behind a creative attacker on the wing ahead of him.

Shaw has his uses as a defensive player who's a very good out-ball in the defensive and midfield thirds. That may sound limited, but it's not necessarily. It lets you play a left wing forward higher up the pitch, who has no defensive responsibilities. That left wing forward would need to stay wide in order to stretch the pitch, though, because Shaw doesn't have it in him to be effective overlapping.

All this being said, Sanchez looks like he'll be the man on the left of the attack, and that he'll be used quite narrow. Shaw simply isn't a good fit for him.

He's just average, been saying it for a while. Fit or not, he's just not a very good footballer. Talented sure, but it doesn't look like that talent is going to ever amount to anything (at least not here).

Not signing another LB is going to come back to bite Jose in the ass and it's going to be his fault.
