Funny how people got carried away after a couple good defensive performances. He can be useful where we expect to defend a lot, like against Liverpool. However when we play on front foot, he shouldn't be anywhere near the first team. His passing is really bad, hence why he never even tries to pass forward.

After his performance against Palace I expected better from him today, but his use of the ball was poor and he looked like he was losing track of things positionally in the midfield battle.
This happened last season after he played very well against Liverpool at OT. Went to shit in the next match. He needs to find some consistency. The game totally flew by him. Pogba had to come deep to cover his ass because he offered nothing

Struggled today after the good performance in midweek. People take offence at him being called a championship player but that’s what he is at the moment, you could find lots of better midfielders playing at that level.

Doesn’t mean he will always be one and won’t get better or that he can’t/won’t contribute as a squad player.

Competition winner.
I mean you also said he had a poor game vs Crystal Palace so it's safe to say your opinion on Scott can be ignored due to whatever this weird agenda is you have against him

Think today showed why he's only an understudy for Matic. Could have been better in possession on the back of the Palace game. Defended well in the box aerially. Was the least of our problems today.

Might have been the worst player on the pitch today. Seemed overwhelmed when on the ball and was the opposite of how confident he looked spraying it about at the midweek. Contributed largely to Southampton having success in midfield before the tactical change from Ole.

Hopefully he can regroup and play better next week because we don't really have another player for that role until Herrera is fit.

Ole had to move Pogba to DM because McTominay was offering nothing both on the ball and off it. Average.

Thought he was most responsible for Southampton having a real chance to take points today off United. Very poor positionally and poor in possession. Shame because I thought he was the exact opposite during midweek. Guess this is to be expected with young players, inconsistency.

Think thats harsh, dont think Pogba was any better than McTominay today.

McTominay did win 3 interceptions, 1 tackle, 3 clearances and 4 headers. Did he protect the backline very well? Ehh...Not really. But he did a much better job of winning the ball than against Palace. His passing was average today though. Hopefully it was just the bang on the back of the neck that took him off his game rather than the Palace game being a one off passing performance.

How about you go ahead and ignore it then?

Made no impact on the game at all. Forgot he was playing at times.

I noticed this.

McTominay is fine for those scrappy games but he isn't good enough to take a handle of the game. We missed Matic today.

Southampton pressed hard today, think it rattled him a bit and reduced his passing options.

Struggle but it's not unexpected, we were poor as a team overall and he's still young, so you expect to be inconsistent.

Maybe that knock early on rattled his cage a bit and affected him more than we thought, or maybe he was just not at his best.

The invisible man.

He still looks lost off the ball as he did when he first came on the scene last year and on it he offers almost nothing of substance.

He also struggles to deal with his man on corners despite being so tall. Twice in two games he has lost a player.

Average performance. Won some headers, won possession a few times - one successful tackle and 3 interceptions, passing unadventurous, didn't concede any fouls. Worst moment I noticed was one corner where Vestergaard got free to head over.

None of our players have a clue at corners. Whether attacking or defending them we're possibly the worst in the league. Someone needs to be brought in to sort it out.

I feel the young ones are judged too harshly on here (Scott and Andreas), any slip up is magnified and pointed as a reason they are not good enough for this level.

Today he didn't have a great game especially his positioning but even Herrera and Matic have had bad days, I still believe he can grow into the Matic role given time.

Andreas is another who's judged to a ridiculous standard as I constantly see Matic being dispossed 3 times each match under Ole but come here to read how he's had a terrific performance.

He was piss poor. Even the crowd were moaning at his sideways passing.

Has had to deal with a lot of pressure deputising for Matic in a crucial run of games for our season and had done well for the most part coming in to today's game. Inconsistency is to be expected from the young ones so I won't go in on him too much, but his experience [and possibly his level?] showed today going forward and it disjointed our midfield play forcing Pogba back.

Bad game, but something I was expecting. Sotton have some good midfielders and they basically overrun us in the middle on many occasions.

You would think the ref was wearing camouflage the amount of times McTominay got tangled up with him, he had moments in the game where I felt like he was doing a good impression of a DM and then others where I was left shaking my head. Smalling gave him an earful twice for him I’m guessing not going with his man or going to the wrong man. His passing was up and down like a yo-yo as well, sometimes decent next minute terrible.

This is the key bit for me. That and we've managed to get through some tricky games with a much depleted centre mid. In spite of some poor bits, he's doing alright in the circumstances, and has even done very well in parts too. We're not spoilt for options, so it's not like he's keeping someone out of the team!

He’s basically what the know-nothings thought Carrick was. His safe passing borders on cowardice. It’s an insult to compare him to Fletcher, he isn’t even a Cleverly. The raving over his Palace performance is a bit strange an all.

No shame in not being good enough for United.

Proper weird looking too.

must be strange being a young player at United and reading all the horse-shit about yourself in here

He is an okay player to have in the squad, probably for our third team. He is not the solution but given our injury crisis, he is probably the best player we have to play in that position right now. It is better he keeps it simple.

After a great game against Crystal Palace now he gives this kind of performance, I know he is a youngster and his performances are not going to be consistent, but god damn he looks like he has a future here one day and like an amateur the next one.

Funny how people expect everyone to be a Kante or a Kroos or Fernandinho.
Ever since he is thrown into the team he's done very well. Stuck to his job, defensively solid & sprayed simple passes. He's just 22 give the guy due credit.
Not saying he's going to be a world class midfielder.
But for now he's doing the job for us.
Last 2 games he's been very good & long may it continue. Cheers

Good game, his mobility is quite refreshing to have in that DMF position, he started good but seems like he was avoiding having the ball after that clash with Lindelof when he was on the receiving end of it.
