I have never claimed Pulisic is WC - I was curious to see who the WC English players are.
Someone claimed USA have tons of World Class players and people asked him to name them.

Nobody was boasting about England having tons of World Class players because we don't.

Anyway, the improvement in the womens game is huge compared to even the last World Cup. Good to see.

Holland should win. Think Miedema will be the difference like v Italy.

Holland did win the euros two years back so they also know their way round the back end of tournaments. Think they'd give US better match in the final aswell.

No worries
I would not be shocked if Netherlands stunned the world* this coming weekend.

*well those watching the ladies play
I'd be pleasantly surprised if they do win it all. I hope they do make the final though, I reckon they'll give USA a tougher match than Sweden.

Having experience of winning a major final should help you'd think.

That post was full-on sarcasm and the poster hooked plenty.

What the hell has this thread turned into ?
I know fans will argue about almost anything but I like to think this amount of pettiness shows how far the women’s game has come. There seems to be a lot more people getting emotional about it than ever before!

For a second it seemed we were transported to June 2010 when posters were taking the piss out of English fans for drawing against us Yanks after all the shit talk leading in.

I'm surprised they never try to get a foreign manager in to push their levels up a bit. I know they had Klinsmann but he was living in America so was pretty much part of the system. Guy like Gus Hiddink a decade ago could've push their mentality up a bit like he did with S. Korea and Australia.

Didn't they go for Van Gaal? Past it at club level but they might've been a good appointment given his vast experience and them having a young squad now.
I know, It's a sorry sight when South Korea & Australia are more innovative than you. Someone like Van Gaal you would think would be very well received over there. His tactical structure & experience would do wonders for them, especially with their young squad like you have highlighted.

I’m talking about the England’s women’s team. When I was at school I didn’t know a single girl that played the game, they didn’t do it in PE, there was no school team and no female sides at the junior clubs we played at. This was only 20 years ago. That’s completely changed within the past 10 years. City have to take some credit for raising the standard. They’ve taken their women’s team very seriously and have invested heavily in top facilities where girls are getting top coaching from a young age.
Likewise .. I think the 1921-71 Fa Ban on woman's football left it with quite a bit of catching up to do. USA had their universities to coach and prepare youngsters and they have had a professional game since 2000 I think.

USA tonight were physically superior and that takes time as elite fitness is built over several years.

I think we (England) have made massive strides particularly over the last 4 years. I have been really impressed and lets hope similar strides can be made over the next 4 years.

 This is why I’ve never been one for trash talking even whilst supporting Man Utd through the glory years where we seemed pretty invincible. It’ll always come back to bite you one way or another.

On a side note, I’m genuinely excited for women’s football. Was put off when I first watched it years ago but the progress is immense. Plus with Manchester United’s Women’s team looking so exciting the future is bright.

I think they're all looking a bit tired. The intensity of games is is generally much higher than 4 years ago as well as the quality.

Regarding the offside call, it would be nice if VAR introduced a system similar to what we see with crickets DRS and "umpires call".

With the current system, we have to consider if they are looking at when the ball first makes contact with a players foot as they make the pass, or if instead they are looking for the first moment there is space between foot and ball. With either scenario, we then have to start considering the frames per second of the video and wherever or not the correct frame has been used or even exists.

Thought the penalty decision was really poor. Us defender doesn’t make any really movement towards White. It’s more White kicks her when she lifts her foot back. Wasn’t a pen for me. A decent argument as well that if it takes THAT long to decide then you really can’t give a pen.

Unsure why Houghton took it also. I know she’s taken pens in the past but in that scenario you have to stick to your usual pen taker. For me that just seemed like an ego thing as captain.

Holland should win tomorrow, they’ve improved as the tournament has come on. Can’t see either beating the USA in the final. Holland will cause them more issues though with their front 3. Unsure if Sweden can really trouble them. They rotated for the group game so can’t much into that.

Just watched the highlights. Good game overall and England will feel like they had a chance to at least take it to ET.
The offside call on White, while tight, looked like a good call. Damnit!
The penalty was also a good call; a shitty peno, with a decent save.
Congrats to the US though I wanted England to win.

Hup Holland, hup!

Did anyone make VAR joke already?

"Have to feel for England, so close yet so VAR."

Just quickly.... America has ZERO mens players who are WC.

Also, to the point some were making about what would happen if the US took this sport seriously. Well the answer is the womens team. This country has put time and effort into developing the womens game here. Also helped to have a head start on a decent amount of the competition. The mens game in this country gets lost after kids turn 18 and head to college.

Holland to win tomorrow. Holland to shock the world and win the title. A US win in the finals is good for the US. A Holland win means so much more to the sport and world though.

Rapinoe to win best player. Morgan for the golden boot. USA to win against the Netherlands on the weekend.

Hopefully England get third.

It isn't quite as simple as that. America had a free run at developing the women's game. Participation has been high among girls at school level for decades in America and they've had a professional league since 2000.

That just isn't the case in many nations that are established in men's football. In England girls have only recently started playing football in significant numbers. The women's pro leagues across Europe are only just starting to grow into something significant but still have a lot of development to do. In countries like Argentina their FA offer little support to their women's team, this is something that happens to a greater or lesser extent in most countries still.

In the men's game, if the US did take it seriously,, they'd be playing catch themselves against long established football nations with deep football cultures and first class infrastructure.

They could become a force of course but I don't think it would look anything the women's team dominance.

Or just name one because in no universe is Pulisic world class.
Maybe take this discussion about USA men’s football vs England/Ireland etc in another thread, rather than derailing the World Cup thread?

@jojojo or another mod maybe clean this thread up a bit? Posters are starting to answer posts about the possible world champions as though it was part of the other discussion ...

I do feel in 10 years they’ll be much better. Participation is going through the roof and the infrastructure is growing all the time.
Just levelling the playing field when it comes to investing in the infrastructure for kids football, will do a whole lot. Professionalization will do a whole lot more. And media awareness will help things along when these things are in place.

When the cat was away, the mice played!

I'm not sure I've got the patience to unravel it - so I'll just say: take the general US sports discussion and US men's team discussion elsewhere.

Or expect to be threadbanned and warned.

They have been talking about this on Talksport this morning and it was brought up about schools having a girls team. That girls should be able to play football if they want rather than being restricted to netball and hockey.

The most offensive thing about Morgan's celebration is just how massively inaccurate was in portraying an average British stereotype. Typically American, thinking all Brits are some sophisticated posh drinking royals.

She should've just got her titts out, drunkenly stumble towards the corner flag and throw up, if she wanted to be accurate. Either or ineffectively debate about brexit for about half an hour.

We are either posh or cheerful cockney chimney sweeps. The rest of the country doesn't exist.

It was classless just like their celebrations over Thailand at 10-0 up. Can't think of another country that would behave in such a way. Even though it wasn't that offensive to the English celebrating in a mocking fashion of your opponents is very typically American

They still don't have girls teams! I just assumed they would by now.

There could be schools that do, but I presume it is funding, that if the girls have a women P.E. teacher, can she coach footbaI think at the primary schools you sometimes see girls in the five-a-side teams, but it will be more of a problem at the senior schools.

And it's not just England where the WWC is getting attention.

The BBC has had TV rights (for free!) for the WSL for a couple of years, but they've always shuffled them round somewhere between the red button and online, with only an occasional slot on BBC1/2. The England team weren't treated much differently until this year.

It always felt as if they were embarrassed about the accusation they were just being "politically correct" - I think they'll be braver about it now. :smirk:
