I worked in Pickens County for a couple of years over a decade ago. One definitely takes a couple of steps back in everything when you arrive there. You are not talking about the most educated populace in the state, toss in a very intense religious hold over the state (a bit more on the virulent evangelical side the further north you head in it), & you have an environment ripe for disinformation, apathy, & not employing common sense, aided by the state government. The southeast US as a whole smacks of this, but it gets especially poignant in SC.@Carolina Red, are most people just ignoring it all, then? Your description is kind of how I imagined it. It's such a shame that people don't realise how much danger they're putting themselves in. I would suspect that most people in Pickens County have no idea that they are in such a dire situation with infections.

I disagree. There’s absolutely no chance that those residents don’t know how dangerous it is. The current admin is still mostly mute over all regarding the situation, but it’s not as though every news media outlet isn’t covering this current situation. Even the right wing media outlets on radio typically are on a larger platform that has national news breaks that will be informing of the current level of the crisis. So, the residents aren’t completely bereft of vital information. And we will see the new admin raise the crisis news decibel level up by a couple of hundred when they take office.
It’s this willful, aggressive ignorance, coupled with selfishness & the clinging to idiotic rituals, that will be the ultimate culprit in the SE regarding this current spike. The healthcare system in upstate SC just isn’t capable of handling what most likely will be coming their way (& already has).
Yes they are. Go into a grocery store or a gas station and 1 out of every 10-15 people is wearing a mask, despite signs on every single door telling them to. The same day that the highest case totals ever were announced in the county I work in, the county’s school district announced the increased school attendance plan we’d be on after break. But no worries! “The virus isn’t spreading inside the schools” and plexiglass divider are gonna keep us all safe.

Funny thing was that they tried to blame their higher than everyone else numbers on Clemson. Then they skyrocketed even though Clemson has been out of school for about a month now.

Both my wife and me had the symptoms, I was ill 2-3 months ago and stayed at home for 14 days, and she had the symptoms 15ish days ago, and isolated and all, while living with me, sharing the table, bed, bathroom, and all the usual stuff, we haven't isolated from each other.
We were pretty sure it was Covid in both cases, so we did the antibodies testing today, and guess what? My wife has antibodies and is negative at the moment, and I don't have antibodies. How on earth is that possible?

Because they don’t last. It’s the T Cell memory that does and they can’t test for that with the antibody test.
At least that’s my understanding of it!

There are many examples of someone who has it not spreading it to the rest of the family.
Its a strange virus (i think, i dont know if most viruses works this way or not) but it seems that its few people spreading it to many.
Yeah, that's the thing I don't get either. And then I should be reinfected again considering that my antibodies dried off and she was probably infected 15 days ago. I doubt I had antbodies 15 days ago that I don't have today.

Just heard from a mate in Brighton , he`s got 14 people coming round Christmas day then off to a party in Lewes on Boxing day . Madness , he thinks it is all a scam . I haven`t replied as I have no words.
And he will get up to a madness on new years day too.

He is a 55 year old man that I have been mates with since we were teenagers. We have always got on , don`t see a lot of each other nowadays but have polar opinions about covid. I am not going to fall out with him but I have given up trying to discuss with people that think like him, there are a lot of them too.
I was being facetious, but yes I've got a couple of friends who are like that. Difficult to watch but I just leave them to it and avoid any conversations where they start getting on their soap box. They're thankfully not at the level of the 5G/Bill Gates discussions.
I have just seen evidence that suicides have not gone up at all during lockdown. They actually decreased in two countries.

Right wing Facebook pages help that shit, they also claim there is no flu this year or can’t comprehend why the flu is not as bad as recent years.
Durkheim wrote a book on this and noticed some startling things. For instance suicides decreased during times of war. I think as well he said suicides were higher during the summer months than winter months.

It needs to happen , with hospital beds filling up rapidly it feels like we are just sleepwalking towards a disaster in all the four nations , whatever each nation has tried hasn`t worked and it just feels like we are coming to a critical point a lot of people seem hell bent on letting go for the week .

Before going on to report that they have seen no increases in suicides during this time in Queensland or Victoria, but more investigation is needed. People who write and read those journals are trained to weigh up those two ideas that don't fit neatly together, but most of us aren't.
So when you hear that a) there are high numbers of reported calls to suicide helplines / claimed depression and b) in past crises people committed suicide more often, without much conclusive data for either, most people tend to just go with their gut. The fragments of contradictory evidence are dismissed as scientists doing what they always do, saying one thing then another.
It is easier for misinformation to spread and be seen, but folk beliefs based on utterly ridiculous notions were common when communities were very small. That's just a big part of culture, and it's part of how we connect. It's just easier for us to all believe the same ones these days. But the mechanisms for forming those beliefs don't seem to have changed much. Our minds do silly things.
