What the hell went through his mind when he made that clearance for the second goal? Who was he passing it to?

Had a feeling that would've led to us conceding. Wasn't surprised when we did. FFS David, just boot it out of play.

Why did Maguire leave it for him? It was a comedy of errors and he was responsible for maybe 15% of it.
I would have thought because Maguire was facing the goal. Have to say if Dean was in net, I don't think either goal happens

He’s soft as shit. Not a good quality in a goalkeeper.
It's getting worse. It now takes almost nothing and he looks utterly terrified. He's always teetering on the brink of that doleful look we've all become so accustomed to the last couple of years.

He was facing his own net is probably why, look Axel layed it back so Dave could thump it into the stands not some one - two in the six yard box

The hardest player to evaluate that I can remember.

He’s been weak as tap water in the air since we signed him & hardly got better at it but he’s a wizard at saving things with his feet like the one-on-one he also saved in the game.

It’s a thankless position in that mistakes are generally punished but conceded how he did tonight simply isn’t acceptable.

He compounded the first goal with some lay back to the winger on the second, surely after goal one you become risk averse to an extent.

Yep. Came to the league with a reputation as a weakling and aside from bouncing back after being Goldberg speared by Andy Carroll he's done nothing to dispel that. As a result he is still getting pushed around like we saw today with no protection from officials.

Absolutely pathetic goal keeping for the first goal. If you are going out to get the ball, you need to make sure you do it. Not whimper at the slightest touch and then feign irritation and dissatisfaction. Any half-decent goalie worth their salt in the PL should be all over the ball there. Only our goalie seems to be suspect when a corner is played so close to the goal.

He couldn't do anything for the second goal so not his fault at all. The goal was a culmination of a series of truly inexplicable and horrendous decision making from several players on the trot.

He could have booted the fecking ball into the stands instead of tamely rolling it to an opposition player. What was he thinking?

Hates physical contact

Surprised more clubs don’t do what Sheff Utd did tonight .

He is clearly instructed by the manager to play out from the back. It's not his natural game to play short passes. I am sure he would much rather hit it across the half way line if Ole approves of it. This is the second time where we have played ourselves into trouble while trying to pass our way from the back.

Other than boot the ball out of play. Really

I honestly think we are the only team in the Premier League that has a goalkeeper who doesn't come off his line when the ball is crossed to the edge of the 6-yard box.

Even on the occasions when De Gea does come off his line, he is so weak and pathetic, and he is easily knocked off the ball.

He has zero command of his 6-yard box.

He is feeble and I have had enough of him.

I can accept the first goal because he is what he is and it was in fact a foul but on the second he needs to fecking clear it

He clearly got a nudge on that Sheffield United opener and if he had gone chasing the ref like he did last season against Liverpool I think the VAR ref would be more interested.

Players need to take responsibility and do the right thing, the obvious thing. There not fecking robots. Never in a million years has ole instructed him to do that. He fecked up and is rightly getting called up on it

If you’re excusing him on the basis of that being an attempted pass then he still gets the blame for playing such a dogshit ‘pass’.

Think he just panicked a bit with the second goal. The ball comes to him quickly and Maguire is dead in front of him so his focus is just on knocking it to the side where it won't bounce off anyone rather than on clearing it properly.

Why the feck didn't he do that? At least make it hard for the ref, make it controversial for them, put doubt in their mind. But what does Dave do?

"Oh well."

Clown.

The first goal is a result of poor defending from Axel.

The second goal is unsavable.

But overall, this may be a good wake-up call. To perform well regardless of where your opponent is standing.

A mystery why he didn't do simliar, it was more of a foul tonight than the Liverpool game also.

Our players are dumb. Didn't you see what we did in the second goal ?

Our team's footballing IQ must be around negative.

De Gea was shoved on the corner kick but he still could and should have powered through it.

On the second goal it's pretty clear he was terrified of a deflection back into goal so he went with the safer option, which eventually resulted in a goal, but it would be harsh to lay that on De Gea.

He did do a shoving motion to the ref to signal he was pushed. The onus shouldn't be on the player to highlight a refereeing error.

First goal was a foul, Flack basically fecking rugby tackles him. Second goal was awful though, cretinous from about 4 or 5 players.

Forgot about this guy. He has caused us the most points of any current player this season.

All of this. He was appalling on the first goal. The second was much more the fault of others than him.

This season only? He cost us Champions League qualification in 2019 and last season he knocked us out of 3 semi-finals with horrid displays after Romero was unfairly and inexplicably dropped.

He needs to get out of this club. He tried to leave us for Real Madrid when he was still in top form and when we were at our lowest as a club.

Now it's United's turn to be ruthless. Get him the hell out of this club. I would not let him play another match. No time for sentiment.

Henderson needs to be our first choice with Romero as backup.

Obviously, you are right. I was just referring to his goalkeeping for that goal itself where he had no chance of saving the shot. On the first goal, his goalkeeping itself was shambolic which is probably the primary competency for his role. In other words, I can live with him giving the ball away like that but never in a hundred years accept the way he conceded the first goal.

First goal he was fouled but it only made a difference because of how soft he is when he comes out. Even after conceding he should have been screaming for a foul instead of a half-arse pushing motion in the air then going about his business. If even the goalkeeper doesn't seem to believe he's been fouled then they won't be looking at it properly.

Second goal I won't blame him too much. The ball came to him at short range with not much time to react and (most importantly) Maguire stumbling in front of him. He's probably worried if he kicks it properly it'll hit Maguire and rebound into the net, so at the last moment he decides to just side-foot it out wide. Could he have done better? Yes. But it was understandable.

Reminder: his greatest attribute is only going to get worse from here on out (his inhuman reflex saves).

It's kind of sad that as a professional, he appears to have never worked on the parts of his game that are clear weaknesses. It'd be like a tennis player winning lots of youth tournaments based entirely on his serve, but refusing to improve his backhand when he turned pro. He'd get nowhere.

Dave's been weak in the air since he started as a goalkeeper. He's never gotten better. That to me speaks to a real lack of ambition.

He's been an excellent player for us, but never went from 'unbelievable shot stopper' to 'unbelievable keeper'. With the team we have at the moment, a VDS type keeper would be far more beneficial.

Sadly from what we've seen of Henderson, he is not that.

Reaction on the first goal was something that he used to do back when we signed him. Somehow he seems to have regressed to that period regarding corners.
As for the second goal, he got the ball in a very dangerous position and all he wanted to do is to kick as far as he could. He could've done it better, but Maguire was in front of him with players swarming around the box. Definitely not his fault.
As for Henderson, couple of weeks ago people were posting how he wouldn't get another chance very soon after some bad reactions and now all of a sudden he is suddenly the second coming again. Next time DDG saves our ass again, he will again be a hero.
Look at the reaction of our defense on the second goal. Hilarious.

Though it’s the De Gea thread, a word about our defending on corner kicks is in order. Our defenders need to be a lot tougher in the shoving and stamping the moment the kick is taken. This needs to be dealt with.

Not really blaming him for the second goal. Maguire directed the ball towards the goal from close range and he had to get rid of it quickly with very little time for a full kick. He got it out of the immediate danger zone and gave us time to regroup. It's everything that has happened in the next 10 seconds that is the problem.
