Yes he does - and he plays more as centre forward these days so you don't want him much deeper than the halfway line anyways.
Well he hasn't for most of his United career, hence why Mourinho hardly played him.

lets hope he's turned over a new leaf

If he presses well, and more importantly (as this is the aspect where I think he's horribly wanting), he adds intelligent movement to his game when we're in possession, that would be more than enough for me. Not sure I'd want a number 9 constantly tracking back deep into our own half - that's not the role.

I get it's critical as a wide player, but he's not that anymore, it's not critical for a central striker except for the extremely rare occasions when opposition CBs join in the attack and outnumber us

I know he's officially now a 9 but I'd like to see what he can do on the left with Ronnie up top. Hopefully with all his personal demons out of his system now he won't sulk about and does the work of pressing, showing for the ball, taking on defenders, fighting for that half-yard of space inside the box and maybe even attempting a header.

Where do you have all this evidence of change from ? the friendlies ?

We have two buckets of evidence: the last two seasons of competitive matches and the friendlies of this summer. Can we actually be sure that Martial’s credible performances in the summer friendlies against second and third rate opposition will prevail over his sulking performances over the last two seasons? I’m not sure we can be sure, but we will find out and I want to see him start over Rashford, who has been horrifying in his first two performances this season.

He should but imagine the reaction about Ronaldo being benched if he does (one of the many reasons he should be gone).
Its Rashford who should go to the bench with Martial up top and Ronaldo from Left on free role without having to play back to the goal.

Not that Rashford works hard but the last thing this team can afford is anyone having a 'free role'.

Even if he’s not fit enough, hope he starts and plays 60 minutes. Even at his lazy worst, he offers more than Ronaldo as a striker.

TAA and Salah will absolutely destroy us if Ronaldo plays from the left.

Guess absence does make the heart grow fonder... A fully fit Martial still has huge question marks over him after years of under performance but now somehow after 2 decent pre-seaon games a half fit Martial is better than Ronaldo? Jesus Christ.

Yet another player of ours who becomes an all time great when out injured.

Have you watched Martial at all the past 2 years.

Not sure how people are laughing at this, Ronaldo’s minimal linkup play and just off the ball ability is so evident but I guess he scored a hattrick against Norwich last season!

Pretty sure I didn't say anything about Martial being better than Ronaldo.

just gonna forget about Ronaldo 24 goals......
Yes, because a clinical finisher to put away the numerous chances we create is exactly what this team has been missing.

Against Liverpool, assuming Martial is physically and mentally fit to play:

Heaton (yes, bench De Gea and I'm not a De Gea hater)
Dalot Bailly Varane Malacia
Fred Eriksen
Donny
Sancho Ronaldo Martial

Martial is vastly more effective coming in off the left than he is in a CF position and Rashford has been horrifying, so start him on the left. Let Martial work with Ronaldo and see what comes of it. Sancho has been ineffective but dropping him doesn't make sense right now.

Bruno has been poor, so Donny. Sure, Fred is an issue but unless Frenkie is a United player by this middle of this week (extremely unlikely) let's go with Fred and Eriksen in midfield. Part of me wants to Garner but Garner appears to be on his way out. The back line...well, something has to be done.

But back to Martial. Why not let him have a go at his natural position?
When was the last time Martial played well from the left? He is better in CF where he played virtually a whole season under ole and was brilliant.

Ronaldo dropped will be a huge statement, but just can't see it with Martial coming back from injury
He needs to drop one of our front three regardless because Ronaldo isn't compatible with Rashford with Sancho. I don't see how it will ever work with all of them starting against any team and not just Liverpool.

Again, not what I said.

This forum is just turning into a bunch of old aunties that are looking for a reason to get offended and get on their high horses.
I'm not sure this fits, I was wondering if you needed a referal for stating "Even at his lazy worst, he offers more than Ronaldo as a striker."

You may wish to read that post again
no need to re-read, perhaps you should?

Well you completely misinterpreted the posters point. I assume you didn’t detect the sarcasm. The poster wasn’t implying Martial was a clinical finisher. So no, I don’t think I do need to read it again.

Using a maligned incongruity undermines any attempt, even if there was an attempt, at sacasm. Reading isn't the issue, framing for quality sarcacm is an issue.
