It wasn't just confidence though was it? Adnan kept running at players, still had his technical ability, and still had the same pace. What changed was how defenders played him. He kept playing the same way, as opposed to using more of his attacking midfield quality, and when the same thing wasn't working, his performances dropped. Nothing to do with confidence. In fact, he was too confident in his dribbling ability.

You know what, you're right that the 2nd season syndrome isn't a thing, but scouting reports being better as the player becomes a more known quantity is absolutely a thing. It's up to the player to adapt/readjust, which does happen regularly by the best players.
Let’s not pretend the keeper & left back didn’t knoe full well what Antony was gonna do. Not sure how a scouting report next season gives them any more insight than what they had tonight. Antony has been deep in the CL with Ajax and is a Brazilian international.

Hopefully with a few more months and more games, his decision making improves. I remember a certain Robert pires for Arsenal who wasnt so good for 1 season and then suddenly explode for the next 5 years. hope Anthony follow same trajectory

Tough tough crowd on here regarding this guy :nervous:. Hearing EtH's post match presser it's pretty obvious he knows the things that Antony needs to improve on and I bet he's demanding a lot from Antony because he knows there's a really talented player there.

Worth noting that the likes of Salah and Mahrez weren’t hitting double figures for goals at Antony’s current age (22) but both have gone on to consistently increase their attacking output since then. Antony’s on 7 goals currently so should hit double figures for the season. He does need to step it up on the assist front. I think the key to this is:
  • better movement in behind. He’s not going to beat many defenders for pace on the outside so he needs to receive the ball in behind
  • Being more willing to use his right foot when he gets into those positions. Had the perfect opportunity today for a simple slide pass to give one of his teammates an empty net today
  • More rotation of positions to cross from the left hand side. Found himself out there today and put a good cross in for Weghorst

Is the last 16 deep in the CL?

That first half was as bad as anything I’ve seen for a while, total rubbish. To his credit, he was better in the second and capped it with a fine goal.

He made the game easy for others by scoring the 2-1. His goals usually are not a useless 3rd or 4th goal.

Well done to him. Only negative would be deciding not to pass for that open. This is a problem in the whole team imo. Everyone wants too much to be a hero often giving up good goal scoring chances (Bruno and Rashford too).

But all in all excellent second half

I have always said I'll give him 9 to 18 months to settle. I still stand by that.

If any player scores that high quality a goal once every 10 games, fans should consider themselves lucky
If he contributed usefully in between, yes. If it's nine games of safe sideways passing, stopping counters, wayward crosses, poor decision making, selfish play and conceding possession before that goal, it doesn't quite add up.

Good thing he played very well yesterday then

Failing to pass was criminal. I have seen players dropped for that.

Looking over my shoulder.
Great goal, terrible for that last finish, lacking assist. That's why he doesn't have enough assists to him, but that is easily coached. No way will ETH let him get away with that.

Please can we stop with him lacking any kind of speed after yet another match where he clearly shows he has both great top speed and electric acceleration? It's just his indecisiveness with the ball that is holding him back.

Second half was much better, still a bit worrying how he finds it difficult to beat a man one vs one and his non pass for a tap in.

But scored a great goal and was great second half.

4G+1A in 15 cup games is pretty good. He's been very poor in the league, but maybe he can improve there as well somehow.

Such a weird thing he always goes for a shot, he must be quite frustrating for his teammates. It must be some kind of confidence thing? Either that or he has zero awareness.

More bed wetting because he didn't pass now. The picture makes it look so easy, but in reality it happened so fast, plus we were already a couple goals up.

Some people don't deserve nice things.

Such an immature and selfish player. Just further highlights how harsh this fanbase was on Nani.

Not many goals

Great goal, pretty wasteful performance otherwise
Averaging around a goal every three games, I'd say that's a pretty decent return for an out and out winger.

He was a lot better yesterday than normally. Much more threatening. Still cost us a certain goal through exceptionally selfish play.
Our whole team needs to cut that out. Bruno and Rashford most often. Fred does it too. But otherwise he did really well.

He had a decent to good game, scored an important worldie that put us back in front, and is our 3rd highest goalscorer of the season. Yes, huge brainfart not squaring it for a tap in. But there's enough to be positive and hopeful about that people should try to withhold lots of the negativity they are spewing about him.

People get so obsessed with taking any opportunity to shit on players they've decided they don't like and/or don't rate. Within 5 minutes of being on the pitch, someone was shitting on McTominay. It's like, Jesus Christ we get it already. Boring cnut.

Scored a goal just 2 weeks ago against Barca.
The match winner, after being out injured for a while.

I think he’ll get better as we start moving away from a reliance on counter attacking long balls over the top. Goes without saying that he’ll need to add some variety to his game over the next couple years if he wants to go to the top.

Last night was the first time I’ve seen him switch to LW for a spell…something EtH can experiment with some more.

Beautiful left foot goal…it’s a hell of a trademark to have at 22 years old.

Our 3rd highest goalscorer is something you'd rather expect from a forward player who in minutes played is also in the top-3 forward players. 28 matches for United, 7 goals and 1 assist is mediocre at best.

I liked his play yesterday most of the time, and loathed his selfishness at times, but come on, for a 85 million signing I expect our bar is a bit higher than '3rd best goalscorer' based mostly on EL and cup goals.

What I don't understand is this: When he switched to the left he put some beautiful and dangerous crosses in the box. But when he plays on the right and he cuts inside (still on his left) his crosses are always terribly shit, either aiming for no one or hitting the first defender. How is it possible?

Some it's the difference between inswinging and outswinging, but his inswinging shots from the right are always very well placed. I don't get t. It must be a mental thing.

I think he's settling in. I think he'll be much better next year. He was tearing CL sides apart last season for Ajax.

Yep I think it’s more mental thing and he also he very rarely crosses from the right side, this could come down to tactical instructions but when he occasionally do it has been very poor.

Hi season has been salvaged with these strikes. I think they've nearly all been important as well.

Still think he's too rigidly stuck to the right. It's not working for him.

And when he shifted to the left he could suddenly deliver a meaningful cross. A left footed winger crossing from the left works. Who knew?

Nonsense. It's been stated by many on here, that Antony will score a few of these goals each season. So he should. he plays enough games and sees a lot of the ball. All our attackers should be looking to score a few goals and create assists.. that's their job.

I watched the first half, and it was a typical Antony game... he then scores a great goal (cut inside etc, etc..), we win 4-1. Look, I give him credit for scoring and keeping going, but I tell you something, this is a guy that seriously needs to work at his game. It is sooooooooo limited, one-dimensional, and it will not cut it at any ambitious, big club.

£80m???

Do me a favour. It's like he doesn't understand the game? he needs to adapt to the Premiership... quickly. He's no good for us in the long run with this form. No way. Sorry.
