The only team that matters
So far he's a stronger, quicker Weghorst. He is the most useful option we have up front at the moment but some are going overboard with the hype. I don't see a clinical striker here.
How many 20 year old clinical strikers at this level are there?

Leaving aside the mandatory "Young and learning and we have to Give him time" note, I thought he was quite decent. Didnt score but was a bit unlucky I thought. He is making the right moves and takes good positions what is far more important than scoring every chance at this point.

Agree, nowhere near good enough. Don't want to sound harsh but he's got big expectations. Has to start scoring.
The reality for a lot of ETH signings, Malacia, Antony, Hojlund all find the PL,
So we should be starting Martial ... seriously??
No we should have bought an elite striker like Ivan Toney and not wasted £85m on Antony when Sancho, Amad and Pellistri were all at the club.

Team is not even functional at the moment. Midfield is barely non existent. Criticising him at this moment is absolutely insane

Same way we shouldn't be spending 60m on Mount when we need an elite 8. We really like shooting ourselves on the foot.

I'm happy that we finally have a striker who wants to get into the 6 yard box and finish off plays. Probably a bit unlucky not to scuff one in today.

People are out of their minds criticising him

Also I can't wrap my head around the logic of "should've spent the money on a more established older striker". Our squad is a mess. Our club is a mess. It is far better to buy a younger CF who can grow and develop with the team so that we can hopefully pull our shit together in time for him actually peaking. As it is - he is very far from any sort of problem for us, he's a very good player and actually quite impressive in what he's shown.

What the hell do people think we would achieve signing a 30 year old like Kane? Our defence would be a disaster still. We wouldn't be close to the title still. Only we'd be stuck in a spot where we threw 100m on a declining asset. Similar to the Casemiro situation, even if I think that one is slightly different but the point stands. Every single signing we make should be geared at aiming to step up as a club and start challenging for honors a few years from now. Because realistically that's where we are at.

Toney is not Elite by any stretch of imagination to be honest good Striker that's about it and I don't see him moving needle for United in slightest with kind of Horrendous football we play either .

Can't really fault him, to be honest. It's clear he is raw and inexperienced, but he is also surrounded by utter dross.

He's doing a lot of things well. I feel like we still haven't adjusted to playing with an actual striker. We need to involve him more. He's making so many ignored runs and getting in good positions.

His team mates are still used to Weghorst standing in midfield trying to defend for when we lose the ball

If we were fighting for 1st he maybe should play a lesser role, but we're 8th and hoping to fight for top four. He looks quite promising, so play him as much as possible

He did what he could and I believe he was quite good actually. Was surprised to see him subbed off.
We needed someone to hold the ball up better and be more involved. For all his faults, that’s one of Martial’s strengths and it isn’t, yet, one of Hojlund’s.

I would start to rotate them more than we have seen so far. Hojlund to start in the week and I’d then bring Martial in for the City game. If we are still in it at 60 minutes, Hojlund would be a good option to throw in.

This club is just not set up well enough for players like Højlund. He’s very raw but we shouldn’t even be relying on him as a starting forward, it’s unfortunately a lose lose situation for the player because while he will most likely get plenty of minutes it’s for a team that’s barely functioning and he isn’t exactly drowning with goal scoring chances provided by his teammates. I hope for his own sake he can get that first premier league goal to get that off his chest.

He looks fine. I think he is a bit unlucky at times. Offside goals, not getting penalties. I think he will make it. Maybe not an elite centerforward, but a very good one. Easily getting 20 goals a season in all competitions in a few years time.

Getting Weghorst vibes, meaning he's very hardworking and tries hard. Sometimes too eager thus messing up his shots/chances and at times just plain unlucky with converting his chances.

Compared to Weghorst, Rasmus is a far better header, has superior footwork and most importantly, he's so quick and strong. That alone will make him a success in the PL.

Am I the only who sees Hojlund actually holding the ball up and passing it on to his team mates?

You've been a hater from the start, no point in even trying to deny it...
What a weird post, what reason do I have to hate him? Obviously I want him to do well but calling it how it is.

You're the one saying there's a conspiracy that Bruno Fernandes is purposely not trying to find him...

Great movement off the ball and he seems self-aware that he needs to have a bit more composure with his finishing. The one the goal-keeper went down well to save in the 1st half.. I reckon a Martial / Sancho would have made the goalkeeper commit first before placing their shot. I think he'll get there though.

When we get a functional team with actual attacking strategies I can see him doing really well.

The points you're making seem to only prove why going for a young unproven striker was a mistake. If every other part of the team is dysfunctional, bringing in someone who is still learning the ropes means it's going to be twice as hard for them to settle and contribute. This is where you need someone who is more capable of making things happen on their own. At this point, in fact, it would be preferable to bring in players who have leadership qualities aside from football experience. Hojlund has neither at the moment and this makes his addition a net negative even if he might be a good player with potential. The money that was spent on Mount and Hojlund could have brought in a genuine world-class finished article striker who would immediately improve those around him like Rashford and Antony. Kane could have been that guy. At a lower level, so too would have Kolo Muani, Goncalo Ramos, or Osimhen. Of all the strikers that were available, Hojlund offers the least to this team, which is no fault of his as he's younger than the rest.

I like him alot and he is feeding on scraps, I think he should've done better with ball that Rashford intercepted either by moving bit further to pull the defenders away from Rashford instead of demanding the pass in his spot which was predictable

Rashford's pass was the issue there, there was plenty of space to pass into for Hojlund to run onto the ball, instead he hits a pass to where Hojlund is standing with too much force.
Poor, rushed shot from Hojlund though.

Good movement and sharp. Happy with him so far. He was feeding on scraps again yesterday and still very nearly scored two.

He scored goals, offers pace and physicality and right now has a huge chip on his shoulder and a massive point to prove, when he’s scoring 20 goals for Arsenal or Chelsea next season and maybe 10-12 for the second half of this one, then tell me he’s not a huge upgrade on what we currently have, stop living in the past, Lewandowski, G Ramos, Haaland, Kane, Osimhen all turned us down we now have to operate at the tier below and then turn them into Elite?

Exactly that, he was prepared to see out his last 12 months and move which was a perfect scenario for us.

There is a time and place for every transfer. That is where Dof steps up (in other clubs). With some transfers you look short term and with some you look at long term. When you already have good striker in team then you can buy someone like Hojlund. But if you don't have a first choice striker and your biggest issue are striker's goals then you go and buy proven striker.
We are not Brighton, club whos season does not depend on CL football and trophies.

Yes, in a long term Hojlund will be good because his potential is huge but in a short term he wasn't a right choice. Which our results and his contribution are showing so far.

Regarding Casemiro; we didn't had any dmc in team. We went for older but proven one. Result is that we are playing CL this year and have one more trophy in a cabinet. That is prime example of good short term transfer.

Depends how much you value being in the CL this year really.

If, hypothetically, we could have signed a younger DM who saw us miss out on CL last year but left us in a better position from this season on then that would arguably have been a better transfer.

Players aren't worth that money for one season. If Casemiro doesn't recover his form and we only get that one high quality season from him then he will go down as a poor signing. That was always the risk, regardless of short term impact.

Happy with him but We are using him wrong. He works best when playing against a high block...ie big teams, but against low blocks, I think he hasn't yet matured enough to know when to come short or run in behind. I think we should be playing martial against low blocks like Shefield United or Brentford etc purely because he is more mature ie knows when to come short or to run in behind (We can of course bring Rasmus on as a sub) and then play Rasmus against high block teams.

What is the purpose of different skillsets in this huge squad that we don't use when playing opposition who are weak against the specific skillset? Rasmus isn't yet mature enough to be our one-stop answer for all types of games

He could have easily had a brace yesterday on another day. Really happy with how he's progressing in this league.

Kane would have been better this year no question. We wouldn't have been close to the title anyway. Which is the point. Spending big on a player who will decline before you as a team are ready to step up is dumb as feck and the reason we are in this mess. It's a mistake we have repeatedly made. It is the reason for a constant rebuild. Buy a younger star if you acknowledge you aren't close, commit to some rough periods but work through it and you'll develop a much stronger group.

Ramos and Kolo Miami? Get the feck out of here, they aren't better than Hojlund . Osimhen was literally double the price.
