Mate you have no idea what the win in 99 against Pakistan did for the sport.
Since the start of the 20th century, football has been the number 1 sport in all of the eastern sub continent ( bangladesh, WB and the 7 sisters). Old men who fought in the world wars could explain the offside rule but couldn't tell you how many balls there were in an over of cricket. The only reasons that Cricket has ANY relevancy in bangladesh is due in small part to Ganguly and largely beating Pakistan in 99.
I don't mean to disrespect Bangladesh in any way. I just don't agree with the fact that their national team has improved since its introduction into cricket.
Sri Lanka played their first ODI in 1975 and (from what I've read) they showed real signs of improvement by th 1992 WC. 21 years after their introduction, they won the prestigious tournament.
Bangladesh played their first ODI in 1986 and 21 years later the famously beat India in the WC. 12 years after that, if they were to beat India again, it'd be just as shocking.
Again, I love the sport and it'd be amazing to see more countries showing interest and participating. However, I do not believe throwing them into the World Cup is beneficial to anyone. There are just far too many dead rubbers and pointless games. Heck, even some former WC winners are fast becoming useless.
For instance, I don't think theres a single individual who isn't routing for Afghanistan. However, after todays absymal showing, whats the point of them being in the tournament? Unfortunately, theres a huge issue with ODI cricket which I don't think will change any time soon.
T20 is probably the way forward.
