Look at this atmosphere for our match compared to yesterday. Coventry have a better fan base than city. Newcastle fans in the carabao cup final last year. Proper teams have proper fans
Doesn't take a whole lot of logical thinking to come to the conclusion that if you're club sees less of these occasions it is more of an event for the fanbase of the club.

Just keep telling yourself that.
Okay mate. We completely outdid the United fans at Wembley in 2011 in our first semi-final in ages when United had been winning stuff for fun for years, and only last year the Madrid players were commenting how intimidating the atmosphere at the Etihad were in a Champions League semi-final were the Madrid fans brought a pathetically low amount of away-fans. These thing varies a lot more than people ever can be bothered to evaluate properly, but get your victories where you can get them I guess

Today was our 4th game at Wembley in 2 seasons. We still sold out our allocation. And we will again in May.

People are pointing out the obvious, that you're not a proper big club. It's a façade, propped up by an oil state.

The guy I quoted used Coventry and Newcastle as examples. City fans have nothing to prove in that regard, the numbers were there in the barren years and the numbers were there when we started winning again.

Compared to the juggernaut United have been we are well behind on numbers domestically and globally. It is no suprise at all that you can fill allocations at Wembley every single year and we might not. At the same time, it is natural that it could well be the other way around in 20 years if the current trajectory of the two teams continue.

Not like any one that actually cares about their team should care whether an allecation is filled or not though. On the final day of the 99/2000 season half of Ewood Park were filled by travelling City fans thirsting to see a two promotions on the bounce after a decade of shite. If most of those fans have got their fill of finals this decade I'd be happy with that. If in 20 years we are proper big club in the metrics provided by the likes of you because the success on the pitch and commercial assault provided by the club has generated a bigger fanbase of match-going fans with bigger waiting-lists for every single semi-final, final or random game we might be lucky enough to participate in, I certainly could care less about it. Good for the revenue of the club I suppose, but not fellow fans I'd ever relate to.

I think loads of United fans from way back could say the same

You didn't start winning "again"

You started "winning" post takeover.

You've had over a decade of success, and the numbers still aint there. And the club knows it, which is why they are desperately trying to market City in China, in the hope that groups of tourists will come over and take up the empty seats. They are clearly visible on TV, in their half and half scarves, taking photos of Marcus Rashford. Top City fans.

Loads of City fans said that there were Madrid fans all over the stadium, last week. Not just the odd seat, but blocks of 50 people.

It is one of the easiest grounds to get tickets, even for the biggest games.

On blue moon, people are always moaning about not being able to get to mid-week games, or not being able to afford 2 games a week. If I can't get to a United match, I have about 15 people who would snap my hands off for both seats. And, if I didn't go to a match, and left the seats empty, I would get an email from the club asking me why I didn't give the tickets back so they could be re-sold and I would get the refund.

We did start win "again" yeah because we had a trophy haul more than healthy enough leading up to 1976, unless that doesn't count for whatever reason.

We have had a decade of success when the biggest clubs in the country and worldwide had already been well established. You don't create massive new groups of match-going fans out of thin air. Unless something drastic happens you will absolutely see the result of the success in the coming years. And as I said, I don't care and I don't really welcome it because I have no idea why you would welcome your club generating more issues of getting tickets and more matchday tourism just to seem more like a big club but when people drag in the likes of Coventry having their biggest day in years and making it sound like a good comparision it just baffles me.

The fact that we haven't had an unnatural growth of match-going fans is a good thing, but it is going to happen at some point. I'm obvilusly not going to convince you of this because you don't want it to happen, but it will. No one is saying Manchester City have ever been one of the biggest clubs around, but it has always been a lot bigger than loads of opposition fans give them credit for, rightly or wrongly. No idea if there were Madrid fans among City fans last wednesday, but if it were maybe they should have gone to the semi-final last year aswell then, when they as I said had one of the smallest amount of fans in the away-end I have ever seen at the Etihad. Not that I thought that made them a small club of course, they've had their fair share of European semi-finals over the years :)

Yes I think people might not realize that City had a good team late 60s into the 70s and even relegated there neighbors once upon a time on the last day of the season if I remember correctly.

I'm not sure of the growth will ever be there. You have pep, bought all the best players you could, and won the trebble, but no one cares. I've never seen so much apathy for one club.

If Spanish fans start saying 'your fans are shit' then your fans are shit. It's that simple. They have no business talking shit about it especially when they won in the end. The might talk about ref, players, anything about the game but not the supporters. It never happened since the beginning of universe, this is the first time ever.

Not exactly. We would have gone down anyway even if we beat City due to results elsewhere. And we had another game left against Stoke.

Yes I know people say this, but it isn't true at all. The so called apathy is only something that is treated like a truth on forums like this one, yet half of the threads in the football forum is about City at any given time.

There’s a real lack of interest though, but I think it’s less to do with how your success is earned but more the changing nature of modern day football fans. I see a lot more fans of players vs clubs, and it doesn’t help that despite your trophy haul the past decade you don’t exactly boast ’iconic' players.

You don't. They didn't. Results elsewhere condemned United to relegation. Losing to City didn't help but old chestnut about City sending us down is just that.

He’s a pathetic WUM. I suspect he knows fine well City didn’t relegate us and is simply looking to get a rise out of Utd fans. That scouse cull a few years ago should’ve included all of them.

Sorry but it is true. Outside of football forums, like msm, the lack of media attention city get is shocking. I thought it would be all over the news when you won the trebble. It almost seems like it's cool for the younger generation to ignore city. I'm not sure what it is. But I have never seen so much apathy for a sporting club in any professional sports. Usually there are band wagon jumpers. But city even seem to be lacking those. Like how is it possible to not sell out your allocation for the fa cup semi final? That should be seen as shocking to the owners. They built it but nobody is coming.

The interest is there though, I can accept that it is harder to see when not associated with the club (but these are the people that seem to care the most about it), but as a fan of the club the growing interest around the club in the last 16 years, and even only in the Guardiola years is significant enough that there would just be silly to say that there won't be even clearer in 16 years to come. This is the type of stuff that slowly changes from generation to generation.

I do completely agree with your point about the modern football fan gravitating towards players and not clubs though, and it is scary in my opinion. Hopefully it won't have the significant dent in football fan culture as I fear it will. I can see a future where Championship/lower league teams have no interest in them beyond their local community and that is a completely shit scenario

Yeah, if you don't think it was all over the media I don't know what to tell you. I'd avoid it as well if a rival club won the treble but I wouldn't really avoid it to then pretend the coverage isn't there.

The rights to the footage of the season were even bought by netflix for a series that recorded by all accounts very impressive viewership numbers. I have no idea how that can fit in someone saying "they have never ever seen so much apathy for a sports club"

We have "bandwagon jumpers", we went on a tour in Asia after the treble that garnered a pretty massive audience over there, our impressive growth in for example the US has been well documented, our average attendances are fine domestically but we are obviously still well behind the likes of United and Liverpool as a whole which is natural. I have no idea why people assume we would be anywhere near them after only a decade of success, but we shouldn't and aren't.

Not selling out the allocation for the semi-final is a lot more varied than just "a club should fill wembley when they are there" as already discussed. It is more normal than you think outside of the global phenomenom the likes of United still is. A quick google search shows that Chelsea, a London club, where struggling to sell their tickets days leading up to the match. Coventry were still having plenty of tickets left only days before their biggest day in decades against United at Wembley. I have no idea if these teams even filled their allocation this weekend but I'm just gonna assume they did. Sheffield United didn't last year against us is all I know.

The argument actually is that it would have been very impressive if we sold out Wembley all the time based on how often we have played there in the past decade. The growth has been somewhat apparent in big games at the Etihad and big European nights, but in terms of match-going fans it is still largely the same domestic audience that we had pre-takeover so like most clubs in England we can't compete with the infinite waiting lists of the likes of United

People don't realise either that we had more trophies than for example Leeds even before the takeover, despite Leeds often being mentiones as a traditional big-club while we are a "third-division club propped up by oil-money" despite hardly ever spending time in the third division, at some point that is what young people that spend their time on echo-chambers like forums will believe. Just like that over time, success on the pitch will make people support the succesfull club. But it doesn't happen over night. But there is no use discussing what is going on now, because at some point it will happen and it isn't necessarily a good thing

But equally these days are numbered for Man City as expulsion from the EPL is inevitable for several years once the 115 charges are proven, which would equally create the scarcity you mention driving better support in 2011.

You just have to accept that City aren't a big club and have a Championship level of following, at best, making their claimed commercial income exceeding United, Barca and Madrid a tale of fiction.

It's a genuine consideration. The hearing date has been kept secret for some reason, but if it features within the next football season, this could have been your penultimate/ultimate opportunity at a FA Cup semi-final for the foreseeable future, if ever again. The argument 'wE aRe ThErE eVeRy YeAr' doesn't stack up when the club might not be in the football league in the next 12-18 months.

Peak denialism.

If you genuinly think relegation to outside of the football league is a likely outcome I really don't know what to tell you. You have obviously no understanding of the charges you speak about and yet you think the completely unrealistic punishment you hope we get is a "genuine concern" and can be used in any proper discussion is a waste of time. No need to be discussing this further with you, I prefer when people don't let their tribalism warp their sense of reality in discussions like this.

And sorry mods for derailing the thread

That may be true but Leeds are undoubtedly a much bigger club than City. They have a national fan base. In my experience the following clubs have fans across the whole of the country:

Everton
Leeds
Newcastle
Villa

Then you've got United, Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal who have an international fanbase.

City realistically are on par with Sunderland, Stoke, Sheffield Wednesday, Coventry etc. I've never met anyone who supports these clubs and isn't from the local area. Although I think a lot of kids 12 and under support City these days so maybe that'll change in the next decade or so.

Yeah, not sure I agree on many of the teams you rank City beneath, but the point still remains that there is nothing wrong with having a largely local following, and the invetiable increase of said following globally after generations of on-pitch success. The whole point is that the discussion is pretty moot. If the success continues the following will realistically at some point reach the (weird) standards some on here have for what constitutes a "big club" and if something drastic happens with the on-pitch success the current following is what you'd still mostly get because you haven't really seen the impact of the success yet. And that is in no way a small following no matter how many teams support you'd consider bigger or how many Villa fans or whatever you have met across the country

And while we are into the discussion about Leeds I can't really let the opportunity go away from mentioning that we posted higher average attendances in the third tier than they did, and let's not forget Leeds are a one-team City. Not really hugely relevant in terms of if Leeds or City are bigger, but somewhat relevant when the support of City are questioned in general

since when have city been concerned about the rules?
Now this is the type of responses I can get behind. More of this please
