There is a tendency in any generation to value higher the players of your own era, the stars you exalted when growing up. Everyone is probably guilty of that to some degree. There is something though for living through an era to fully appreciate the lay of the land at the time. Sometimes that helps to cut through the revisionism (e.g. player X scored two goals in a major final, he was clearly the standout of his generation; or player Y never won the Champions League, was he really the main man?; or, as we're seeing here, player Z never played for any major clubs outside Eastern Europe, he couldn't have been all that).
Exactly - and one might add, pertaining to the particular example used, the idea that defenders back in the day who "took out" star players from certain matches simply pulled out a switch blade and threatened to cut 'em up (because the refs allowed murder unless it was too much blood).

As Moriarty highlights, the shadow jobs Reaney did on Best wasn't about kicking the shit out of him - but rather about actually marking him out of the match.

As for old timers praising players - yeah, sure, they may exaggerate. But in my experience that's mainly about the usual suspects versus modern players - or about players who happened to play for the old timer's club of choice. When Moriarty, a United fan who's been a regular at Old Trafford since before most of us were born, gives praise to a Leeds player - that's probably objective more than anything.

And there's plenty of context with these players - as Gio suggests - which is sometimes crucial, and sometimes not reflected in sheer statistics at all. Details which only someone who actually followed the career of the player, there and then, is aware of. He may be biased one way or the other - but even taking partisan prejudice into consideration, such views can be very valuable, because they're contemporary and in-the-damn-thing much more than pure stats can ever be.

After picking Lodetti, I'm going to pick another player who'll provide more defensive security and a greater balance to the side. This player is one of the most successful Danish players to ever play the game and someone who I'll rely on to keep my defence solid.

Johnny Hansen

What the hell just happened then?
EAP tagged Gio, it's his turn now, Everyone picking before me (Gio, crappy, ctp, Balu - in that very order) has a keeper already. I wanted Ivo Viktor with my my next pick, but have to head out in a couple of hours. So we skipped to me, and back to Gio. After Balu picks his guy, we skip directly to you; instead of me, then you.

Ok, Gio/ Theon have Mazurkiewicz, crappy has Shilton, ctp has Iribar, and Balu has Jennings. So I'm just gonna go ahead and select my keeper now. Been almost two days since I last chose a player.

@Balu please tag Gol123 when your turn is over mate. :)
to be quite honest I don't like this - you exclude the possibility of tactical picking for others without asking them. I'm sure that none of them would've picked him but you have to give them the choice

How do you tactical pick a keeper?

Alright, was merely a time saving exercise. If it makes a massive difference in terms of tactical setups, then fair enough, I forfeit the Viktor pick. Will take the keeper later when it's officially my turn, but folks might need to wait 6-7 hours since I probably won't be back soon. Posts deleted. @Balu please tag me, not Gol123. Thanks!

tactical pick is a pick that you chose to do to prevent someone from getting them and not because you need them. we have 12 picks, so you can easily pick 2 keepers to make it difficult to others.

I once picked 2 goalkeepers while in the newbs, just so I could deny someone else that GK. :nervous:
Seems silly as it is wasting a pick that a more useful player can fill up.

"Nobody gets past God, except Stan Libuda."

Reinhard Libuda was one of the best ever German wingers, probably the only player who's a legend for both Schalke and Dortmund. Libuda's outstanding feature was his dribbling, his proficiency at the Matthews-trick earned him the nickname "Stan".

We actually had crazy managers picking 2 goalkeeps before, so you never know ;). I didn't mind in this case, but it's better if you just send your pick to me or gol123 in a PM instead, then you know that it gets posted without causing a delay.

They still have the choice. As they come before in lineup, no one is stopping them from picking him despite Invictus's post. It's Invictus who's running the risk of announcing his pick and making tactical picks easier if anyone else us inclined so.

I don't see anything wrong in what he did. It's not like anyone can bypass the order by posting sooner.

Karol Dobiaš (born December 18, 1947), is a former Slovak football player and coach. During his career, he was a versatile player, mostly playing as defender or midfielder.

He was born in Handlová. His career started in Baník Handlová. In 1965 he moved to Spartak Trnava where he achieved the biggest success as a player. With Spartak he became a five time Czechoslovakian champion and won three national cups. In 1970 and 1971, he was named Czechoslovak Footballer of the Year. In 1977 he moved to Bohemians Prague. During his career he played 345 matches in the Czechoslovak league and scored 20 goals. In 1980 he was allowed to be transferred abroad and he went to KSC Lokeren in Belgium. He ended his career in 1984 at K.R.C. Gent-Zeehaven.

He was capped 67 times for Czechoslovakia, scored 5 goals. He was a participant at the 1970 FIFA World Cup and a member of Czechoslovak winning team at 1976 European Football Championship. In the 1976 final game Dobiaš scored a goal that gave Czechoslovakia a 2-0 lead against West Germany.

Dobiaš's first team as a manager was the youth squad of Bohemians Prague. In 1988/89 he managed SK Hradec Králové but was dismissed after the 14th game day. In September 1990 he was assigned manager of Zbrojovka Brno. The team was relegated and with Dobiaš it achieved a one season comeback. In 1993/1994 he managed Sparta Prague and won the Czech league. Still he was fired after just two games the following season. In 1995/1996 he coached a minor Prague team SK Sparta Krč. Afterwards he worked for many years as a scout for Sparta Prague. For the 2003/2004 he was selected an assistant manager for Bohemians Prague but his contract was cancelled in January 2004.
