Hating stats doesn’t make them any less valid or convincing.
A lot of good players it is easy to engineer stats to suit. A lot of his stats have compared to DeBruynes for a fair while, people were saying he was as good if not better than DrBruyne. Anybody with eyes can surely see he isnt as good as DrBruyne. He is a good player, he works harad....he isnt world class though or one of the best in the world.

I fidn it tellign when people have been talkign about Portual as possible winners of the tournament..........he doesnt seem o be one of the first names people are mentioning in that squad

Hw has shown signs of gettign back to something clsoer to the player that arrived here and made so many crucial moments in games, that is he player we all want to see but no, stats arent entirely convincing for me

Your first sentence makes no sense. How do you “engineer” stats? They are what they are.

After one season at FC Infesta, Fernandes became a target for the two leading clubs in the region, FC Porto and Boavista.

His family opted for the more modest Boavista, who laid on a minibus to take him to training.

But first he was loaned out to another local side, ADR Pasteleira, where coach Antonio Ribeiro arrived when Fernandes was 15.

"When I came to the club Bruno's team wasn't winning any games. He was playing as a central defender and I decided to make him the playmaker. It was from that moment on that we started to win games. He scored lots of goals," says Ribeiro, now 63.

"He was scrawny but wasn't afraid to get stuck in. And off the pitch he was a really humble teenager.

"But on the pitch he had a strong personality and so was often squabbling."

Portuguese league must have tons of young playmakers that young Bruno could only start as CB.

Look at how people were trying to justify Maguire being good with stupid stats like Aerial duels won... Even Maguire himself posted them on his social media.

Maguire is good in the air though. That stat wasn’t deceptive. Only “stupid” if you don’t understand that it takes more than winning headers to be a top centre half.

It was deceptive because there' s more to football than just looking at plain stats and acting like they're the main factor in evaluating how good a player is.
Same thing was going on with Lukaku's stats

The only “problem” with stats is people not understanding them or how to put them in context.

You only needed to look at Lukaku’s goalscoring stats against top teams to see he wasn’t up there with the best strikers around. Although, equally, the fact he was a big success at Inter shows how stupid it was to ignore some of his more positive stats.

You only mention positive stats....and how do you even analyse stats "assiss" big difference between a corner, three yard pass and a defence splitting pass or ourageous pece of skill leading to a goal, but its all labelled the same way. Is an obsession with analysing a players performance from stats with mdoern generation of fans....Wha about simply watchign a player play

Believe it or not, everyone who posts in threads like this also watches the player play.

Our best offensive player. I swear, just give him competent wingers with a striker that runs into space, and he will have a field day.

So good when he has runners in front. He's not perfect, but in international level he really could be a great in the right system as international football is always a bit older style, more chaotic where he thrives. Play him as the 10, get Leao, Felix and Bernardo around him. Drop the cnut and he'll run that team.

His 2nd assist was class as he carried the ball from half way and released Leao at the right time and weight. Very calm and composed.

1st assist we've seen that many times and the weight of pass wasn't great, but he knew the defender had his back to him and the defender slipped or didn't track the ball, which allowed Felix to get the ball under control.

It was fair that Bruno's stats were compared to KDB's because some of the important ones, like goal-creating stats, are very close. KDB is a better player at his peak, and Bruno is one of the best players in the world.

He really isn’t. But I guess two assists against Ghana is getting everyone hot and bothered in here.

Hot and bothered?

Just rightly praising one of our players at the World Cup?
Not like he was decisive in the win for Portugal or anything. The vitriol he's getting, while people lament other players being boring at the same time, is ludicrous. Fantastic player.

On a side note, found it funny that he immediately assisted two goals after moving to a central position from the wing
