Eric Dier | Poch: “He is an important player for us and the idea is not to sell him."

Do you want United to sign Eric Dier?

Oh maybe, but he holds the gun now if the offer comes in. And if one is treated badly it can effect a whole bunch.

Offering him a new and greatly improved contract, which he gladly signed, does not equate to "treating him badly", nor does starting him in pretty much every match.

And nor does refusing to sell him when he has 4 years left on his contract - even assuming that he wanted to leave. Contracts cut both ways.

His strengths are versatility in at least 3 different positions, good pace, very good with arial balls, decent passing, strong physical presence, good discipline in knowing his role and sticking to it, good tackler, rarely injured, aggressive, reasonable positioning and anticipation.

Weakness: occasionally loses concentration, not especially good going forward (when playing as DM) as he's sometimes not sure what to do with the ball.

He scores the odd goal, including the occasional long-range screamer, but is mostly only a goal threat for headers from corners.
Cheers. One final question. What's his temperament and character like? Is he one to step up on the big occasion or does he go missing? How is he under pressure? Is he a fighter or is he someone like Carrick who just quietly gets on with his business?

I'm asking this because I consider it very important not just for United players in general but also as a potential player under Mourinho.

What about long balls, seems very good at that.

He's definitely a fighter and seems mentally tough to me. Has no off-pitch issues that I'm aware of. Is a popular member of the squad, very good friends with Alli in particular.

Can he take corners? He's the same level as Phil Jones, but of course the big difference is he's fit. Can play CB/ DM/ RB - sounds very familiar. Comparisons with Carrick are silly, Carrick is a completly different player to Dier. If we gave spurs £40-50m for him, of course they would accept it, he's not integral to either their defense or midfield.

Yes, he can play very good long balls, especially diagonal ones for our wingbacks to run onto, but sometimes tries it a bit too often IMO.

I doubt it.

I don't recall him ever taking a corner (could be wrong) - he's mainly looking to get on the end of them with his head.

Uhhh, Lukaku will love those! Long balls team, he and Pogba…

I apologise if you have already answered this but would you, as a Tottenham fan, consider him a miss if you were to hypothetically sell him?

He can take a free kick. although that was more like an open goal.

If Dier can lock up the midfield to let Pogba do his thing then it will be worth the money. I haven't watched Dier closely enough to know if he is defensively all that, but that's what I'd be expecting from this kind of signing.

However I don't know if we have enough creativity in attack to play 4-3-3 and I don't know if Pogba-Dier would be an upgrade on Pogba-Herrera in a 4-2-3-1. I'm thinking no on both counts but I trust Jose to know what he wants.

Of course - he's part of our best XI. He's not a star player like Lloris, Alderweireld, Alli, Kane or Eriksen, but he's still an important player for us.

After last season's Herrera, it would be harsh to find him an upgrade, specially after he turned down Barcelona's approach. I feel this buy, in that sense, is very sensible.

Dier has been getting a lot of stick here since that France game tbh. He's not the best but also no THAT crap.

Still don't think he'll come.

It's almost like people here don't watch Tottenham much, but happened to turn on the England game, and have made all their judgment on that one game.

My point was not that we need an upgrade on Herrera. My point was that signing Dier would either mean we would be playing 433, in which case we'd probably need more creativity in attack, or 4231 with Dier replacing Herrera, which as I said I don't think would be an upgrade.

Both, like last season, depending on the adversaries. In general, 4-3-3 more defensive, 4-2-3-1 more offensive. Herrera for high pressing, Dier for sitting back and long balls? I feel it's an upgrade on variety, since Carrick and Fellaini, for different reasons, can't always be trusted as #6.

No it doesn't actually as nobody can force him to play. Good luck with telling him hes not allowed earn better pay. And FAR better pay at that.

Wouldn't even want us to spend 20 million on this two legged bag of dog poo...

Yeah a DM isn't exactly the exciting player with 20 minute long clips of extraordinary stuff on YouTube. But the video I found was 3 minutes of average every day stuff. He's average at best... If I wasn't clear how I feel about him... DON'T WANT!

I get all that, those are basically the options I described in my post, but I'm not convinced more variety is enough for us right now. We need to improve our first XI to win the league and, for the reasons I gave, I don't see 433 or 4231 working out with the players we have. Hope I'm wrong of course.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but did Spurs not essentially say he wasn't for sale at any price?

im not a huge fan of Dier but I do see his versatility, and being english, being desirable for Jose. But as my stance is always to give a player a chance Id support him if we somehow didnt get bent over by Levy for him. Id still prefer Fabinho though

We're still missing the winger. After that, I feel we're good to go. You have to give another chance to Mkhitaryan, Martial, even Shaw. And maybe Mourinho thinks we were not that bad last season and it was by fine margin we didn't impose ourselves in the league. Except Lukaku, all buys seem for potential starters. Maybe the devil is in these variety details.

Besides, it's a young team, not even average 25, something is being built up.

No one will need to. He's hardly going to go on strike with a World Cup coming up next year - he will want to play and play regularly.

As for pay, he's already earning far more than he was just 10 months ago and no one is telling him he's not allowed to earn more. But if he wants more, he'll have to either prove he deserves it at Spurs, or wait until there is less remaining time on his contract and hope that (a) Spurs are willing to sell and (b) there's a better offer from another club on the table.

I hear the same old stuff every summer: a big exodus from Spurs because we supposedly pay badly, but it never actually happens beyond media guff and the wishful thinking of opposition fans.

One the subject of pay, it may surprise you to learn that Spurs incentivise more than most, providing one of the most lucrative bonus schemes (bonuses on top of basic) in the Prem. For example, certain players are paid 20k per goal scored.

What's certain is that Martial and Mkhi will need to have breakout seasons if we are to be productive enough to challenge for the league. They'll need to be posting much better performances and output from here on out. Personally, I am hoping rather than expecting that to happen.

I agree. I feel Mkhitaryan might come good, even if the packed defenses of the Premier League leave him stumbled. Martial, not so sure, maybe if he starts right.

But thats exactly it, there is a supposed better offer on the table and not allowing him to leave is telling him he cant earn more money, he's a footballer and he'll say what they all say. "My career could end tomorrow you have to take each opportunity that comes along". And they are right, anyone of them could do an ACL first game of the season and could never fully recover.

And do you think their advisers say any different? I can assure you they do not!

Just stating fact, can't avoid how it comes across. United are officially the richest club in football and the first to surpass a £500 million turnover. The huge sponsorship deals with Chevrolet and Adidas clearly having the desired effect.

There really are very few players we couldn't afford to purchase. As you say the location is less than desirable, but the salary at the end of the week more than compensate's for that. Safe to assume Dier would take no issue with the location either.

Out of interest, who was the last player to turn us down due to the location?
Moura certainly but also youd suspect plenty who ended up at chelsea. Obviously we're an attractive prospect to players but its far less cut and dried than you make out. There are at the very least two clubs who are bigger than us in europe in real and barca and plenty who are as capable of throwing money at a problem as we are.

That fulfils only 1 of the 3 conditions I stated.

You apparently take the view that contracts are meaningless and that any player should be allowed to immediately leave if they get a better offer in terms of wages. I don't share that view and nor does Levy.

Players expect contracts to be NOT meaningless when it comes to receiving the wages stated therein. So by the same token the length of the contract also has meaning in terms of some form of commitment by the player to the club. They can't have it both ways.

If you want your club to be run differently, that's your lookout.

Not convinced by this one. Too much against it for me. Spurs dont need to sell him so the only way to get him would be paying well above his value.i could understand that for bale, but not for dier, surely? Wouldnt be surprised if the tabloids are being drip fed disinformation while we move on someone else. Theres plenty of good holding players around.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but did Spurs not essentially say he wasn't for sale at any price?
Yeah that's what I thought, and why I don't think it'll happen. I'm very open to Dier as a player, but I shudder at what it might cost us, especially after probably getting skinned for Perisic. If we could get Dier for 40 mil in this market I would say that's a very good deal, but I doubt it.

I would love to see him at Old Trafford. He's one of the most talented English youngsters and exactly what we need right now.

With that said, I don't think Levy will sell.

I'm not one to complain about a transfer fee if a manager wants a particular player and Dier is not a bad player, but feck me, the fee being quoted leaves me feeling a little sick. I hope Woody has a lot of lube because Levy will definitely be bending him over.

Watching a piece on Michael Carrick on MUTV. Can't help but draw parallels between him and Eric Dier in term of the transfer happenings between Spurs and Man Utd.

I think we are after him because we want to sell one or two of the English guys and to fulfill the homegrown/English player quota he is the most attainable target and I guess Jose rates him. That's just my view

Interestingly enough, he's not a homegrown.
