As is the case with the all other forwards in our team, he needs to improve his finishing and he'll be a very good option for us. The way he and Rashford linked for us against Chelsea was delightful to watch.

"He shouldn't be a starter." What an idiotic thing to say. He will start as many games as the Manager thinks he is fit to.

Don't think he's a wide player, always think his best games or moments are when he's central playing off a forward.

I noticed this as well. Even prior to this game, there were a few times he played behind Ibra and linked up with him pretty well.

Don't be silly. There are people on this forum who absolutely know more about Jesse Lingard than Sir Alex Ferguson or Jose Mourinho.

When reinforcements are brought in and he's purely a sub or cup player, I guess those people will have know as much as Mourinho?

When people realise in the year 2017 that there is NO such thing as a first XI anymore, we can all move on and stop discussing 'not good enough for the first team' bullshit.

Football at the top level has been a squad game for the past decade, yet some people still haven't realised this. "A sub or a cup player". C'mon man for crying out loud.

Interesting then how Leicester trotted to the title with a healthy, consistent first XI, or how Jose tends to do the same in all of his league title runs. Or how the big Spanish clubs or Bayern or Juve or PSG or Monaco this season stick to a consistent XI throughout their runs.

Why do people take offense when someone says Jesse Lingard is rightly a squad player at Manchester United? If anything, it's only an insult at this moment in time because Manchester United isn't very good (compared to top tier teams). If he retains that role in the team as Jose brings us back to the top of the mountain then it will be a testament to his quality. If he proves most everyone wrong and becomes one of the first names on the sheet every week, then even better.

That's always a classy way to address it. Most of his goals from last two seasons, yes. All of them back up the argument that he's pretty good at shooting, in my opinion. I thought we weren't discussing whether he's scored plenty of not, but about his shooting ability. I think it's unfair to say he doesn't have a good shot. Actually I'd say he has one of the best shooting techniques in the squad. Would you say he misses a lot of chances because of his poor shooting? Or in general?

Sorry last post got interrupted as someone knocked on my door then the message or me posted the reply half finished. But point remains If he was better at shooting he'd have scored more goals and his actual return is pretty poor for a forward at United. I think when Jose gets his team in order Lingard will get even less starts.

I think it's more down to lack of composure and confidence in some situations, than his shooting. I agree that he has to improve (and I don't see why he couldn't) to become more effective and he probably will stay as a squaddie (as he should) and face more fight for his minutes in the future. I wish that too.

Yes Ferguson called his progression right, and yes Mourinho and LvG do like him.

That doesn't mean that a fan of this football club can not question his form, his ability or inclusion in the team. People have different opinions.

There are so many posters here that maintain the view you have to share the same opinion as the manager. Basically rendering all critical discussion void. And slamming everybody who dares to question the players abilty, spoilt or not a real fan.

Of course Mourinho knows better than me but I will form my own opinion. And that is that Jesse Lingard, since after the Community Shield, has had a poor season, and has only picked up form as recently as Middlesbrough. He was also poor the last 2 months of last season, but we all forgot that after the FA cup glory.
I want to see him keep up the good recent performances, and I genuinely hope he does, but he hasn't had many good games this season.

But surely composure is part of the skill of shooting not just whacking long 25-30 yarders?

Guess it is, still I don't see him missing nearly as many chances as many others in our team. And I'm sure the more experienced he gets, the better the composure as well. Can see him scoring 10+ in all comps next season, depending on his playing time of course.

Man Utd 2:1 Anderlecht
In b4 Lingard's criticised for not having longer legs.

Presumably your other 218 posts are you popping in various threads to mention you've no view on the matter and just agree with what the manager does because he's more qualified to an opinion than you are?

Bang average today.

He isn't the only one but few players are capable of being as invisible as Lingard. I think it took until the 12th minute when he touched the ball for me to actually register he was playing since reading the team sheet. He has two modes: good and utterly invisible The former only being on view 5 or 6 times a season.

An off day. I don't think he is good out wide as he is centrally but thankfully he doesn't moan and gets on with it.

I want to see him rested on the weekend, and then started up top with Rashford against City away (how he played against Chelsea). Tonight, it seemed he was pushed out too wide and restricted to an area.

He never stays wide when he plays on the right, he drifts constantly into the middle.

But its more restricted imo. And it would make sense if he has Mkhi and one other there. But at the same time we also saw Zlatan dropping deep too (thus we sometimes had four in the same line).

Like last thursday awful again tonight. These games va Anderlecht and the chelsea performance tell me he just isn't good enough to play wide. He's just not a winger he doesn't have many attributes to be effective there. Looks more comfortable in the middle. Thats where he should be played from now on in my opinion if we need someone on the right play Young.

And we're back in the Lingard cycle. One good game, followed by 4 poor games. Shame his form is always so up and down

Catching up on TalkSport Drive on my journey home from work this evening and Dave from Manchester says we don't need Antonie Griezmann next season because we have Martial, Lingard and Rashford next season who can be up there with the worlds best...

I dispear.

I think most of our attackers struggle to get into the game with only a midfield 2 behind them. 4 attackers have to compete with each other, and Pogba as well. With not enough consolidation or support from midfield, of course some of them will struggle. 4-2-3-1 especially with Pogba in midfield should be abandoned completely. What's worse, we line up like that at home in a tie which could easily be decided by away goals.
Yeah, I gave Lingard a 3 out of 10. But I don't blame him for that.
I'd like to see less attackers on the team sheet, and more attacking football.

Totally agree - 433 and remove Lingard from the attack

Bit like an annoying mosquito who keeps buzzin around and nipping at you. Goes to ground so so easy though.

After a good few games in March seems to of gone back to the usual inconsistent Lingard we know all to well. Think he will play against City on Thursday so we could really do with one of his good games in that as the last few games have been poor.

He's a work horse. He is in the squad because of his incessant running. Which is credit to him. We know he's not as talented as Martial for example, but he puts himself in contention for a spot with his tireless displays.

Decent squad player. When Mata comes back and Martial shows some consistent form, he'll get fewer starts. For now he deserves his chance

We need to play one of Martial / Rashford in his place against City. Neither should be on the bench for the likes of Lingard.

I bet you were moaning about the line up against Chelsea.

Lingard is a big game player and his presence provides time and space for other players thanks to his tireless runs off the ball into space dragging defenders around.
