Liverpool are a massive club. That's why, historically, we've always seen them as our main rivals. If you have a grasp of football history, it's pretty obvious.

At some point it has to change, and I'd say Chelsea are bigger.
Not only more relevant (and having the better side for most of the past decade) but trumping them in most aspects off the field too.

Not that it matters.

Yeah I agree, but the difference is in the rapidity of the thing. Liverpool and United gained fans gradually as they became successful, you didn't stick your head out the window one day and suddenly notice a flock of Untied fans... it took time, so much so that it seems big clubs have always had millions of fans. With Chelsea it was almost overnight.
United's initial growth in fan base was nothing to do with success. We won next to sweet FA, however, from just after the war we attracted a lot of fans. Records will reflect that from about '48 we have had the largest following. A lot to do with Sir Matt and the introduction of a different style of football to the physical game that had been introduced by Arsenal in the 1930s. Add the sympathy fans from post Munich and the media PR of the Babes and you start to build a very large fan base.

I know it's not technically RAWK but...

So this was the topic up for discussion on the talkSPORT Facebook page:

Just look at the number of muppets trying to discredit Giggs' goal. Some of the explanations are hilarious.

Some responses (there are loads) :

Cheating super injunction getting, abortion forcing rug chested Welshman vs a legend.
Gerrard's any day simply because of the quality of the strike and the situation it was in, not many players would pluck the courage to take a shot like that from 30 yards in stoppage time
I think a 90th min West Ham team is a lot better than a 120th min arsenal team who are pulling up with cramp

The same West Ham that are 7th in the premier league and in the 5th round of the fa cup, don't sound that bad to me
Giggs not good enough to score from that range

After the war there was a huge surge of support for football in general but after the inevitable subsidence United maintained big crowds with their cup wins in 1948 and 1963, their league wins in 1952, 1955', 1956, 1964, 1967, and their European Cup win in 1968.
Certainly the then unique composition and brilliant style of the babes plus the sympathy generated by Munich had an immediate impact on attendances but without success this massive fan base would not have been born and continue to thrive through the somewhat barren 70s and 80s, even in Div. 2

I know this is off topic but here's some RAWK quotes. ;)

Why can't anybody hit the target? Football goals are massive, how can nobody get it anywhere near inside them?

Even this twat would pick up a man of the match award against our feeble fecking efforts at goal.

Crap, innit? Who can we persuade to threadban them?
No idea. Maybe a new thread with strict instructions like that for Ronaldo-Messi thread will help. Remember the spammers in old Ronaldo thread? Especially the top 10 posters there? God they were bad! :wenger:

Can we threadmark it from when it was decided that Liverpools dad was bigger than Chelsea's dad but currently Chelsea would win in at the fighting against Liverpool.

May sound a little crazy, but I think Sterling can be on the same level as Messi and Ronaldo in a very short time in the future.
This. It's no coincidence that the two best players in the world were also the most exceptionally talented at an incredibly young age.

So yes, Sterling fits into this category. Think Sterling will fit into a category somewhere in between a Robben and a Messi. Definitely expect him to be battling with Neymar, Isco, etc. for Ballon D'ors in the future as long as he doesn't get a big injury.

France - can't win anything with Swedish turnips
Think that might be a dubious claim. Most supported team at the moment? Yes. In 1993? I really doubt it. Our global brand really kicked up a level after the 98/99 treble season.
United's history and popularity didn't start in 1999 - they have had the highest average attendances for all but 11 years since 1956 and when they weren't it was usually due to ground improvements - they even had the highest overall average attendance when they were in the 2nd division in the mid 70's

Some favourites:

It was cup final night in Istanbul,
And the ref had just blown half time,
All the Reds around the world,
Looked to heaven for a sign,

God was drinking his co-co,
And reading a good book,
When Shankly hammered on his door,
Screaming "Boss ya gotta look!",

Together they turned the TV on,
And watched the unholy score,
"This must be the work of the Devil" said God,
"Get Bob in here and shut the door",

Together they made a plan,
To turn the game around,
"It"s gonna take more than holy intervention" said Shanks,
"It needs a heavenly sound".

"But there is no choir of angels that could lift those players hearts",
As Liverpool sat in the dressing room,
Waiting for the pain of the 2nd half to start,

"Listen" said Bob with a knowing smile,
"We don't have to worry",
"Grab your coat and get Emlyn",
"Quick Lad, we have to hurry"!

Shanks stood proud in the dressing room,
Telling Raffa what to say,
While Bob listened in on Milan's plans,
For information he could relay,

Emlyn sat in between the Kop,
To cheer the supporters up,
Not one person in the world,
Thought that the Reds would lift that cup,

Then somewhere in the distance,
A shout--"WE CAN TAKE OLD BIG EARS HOME"!,
Then we got engulfed in the heavenly sound,
Of "You"ll Never Walk Alone".

The song lit up the dressing room,
Bill smiled "Our work is done",
Bill Shankly, Bob and Emlyn,
They knew the cup was won.

For there is no choir of angels,
That can out sing the Kop,
No golden harps or trumpets,
Can knock us off the top,

God had a word with Paisley,
He asked "Are you sure, theirs lots more to play?"
"The cups going home to Anfield" said Bob,
"I know, its the Liverpool way."

Shanks nodded his head with delight,
"He is correct sir, isn't he Hughes?"
Emlyn just answered,
"We have just lit the glowing red fuse",

"We have just woken up the worlds best player",
"The famous Liverpool Red twelfth man",
"Just sit back and watch how the Kop play",
"The shouting will kill off Milan".

So as a Red never disrespect,
The players in our team,
With us all shouting for them,
We will all realize our dreams.

YAWN.

'Rafael' by Edna St Vincent Millay

Time does not bring relief; you all have lied
Who told me time would ease me of my pain!
I miss him in the weeping of the rain;
I want him at the shrinking of the tide;
The old snows melt from every mountain-side,
And last year’s leaves are smoke in every lane;
But last year’s bitter loving must remain
Heaped on my heart, and my old thoughts abide.
There are a hundred places where I fear
To go,—so with his memory they brim.
And entering with relief some quiet place
Where never fell his foot or shone his face
I say, “There is no memory of him here!”
And so stand stricken, so remembering him.

Louis

The field's a green maze
when our Luis plays
turns and bends
hedgerow dead ends
his escapes can be seen
like a Steve McQueen scene
on his bike o'er the kop
from Gestapo jail to photo-op
a Uruguayan master class
in spatial physics and center of mass
of ball projection
of arching perfection
a passion injection for Panini collection
his swerves are the treasure
of Anfield's red pleasure
so long may he grace
Shankly's wrought iron gates.

Much have I traveled,
much have I seen,
I have absorbed and inhaled,
laughter lines,
and forward lines,
drawn battle lines across time lines,
through good times and bad,

It gets under the skin,
it leaves its mark,
and is worn with pride,
five stars flicker in the firmament,
which warm a deep and unconditional love,
which serves to remind us,
that all we need tonight,
perhaps more than ever,
is each other.

I revert back to my Liverpoem;

Twinkle, twinkle, Gerrard falls,
Once again he's won feck all.

As one of the other posters mentioned, the irony of Liverpool fans losing their shit over Costa when they blindly defended Suarez for his antics over the years is delicious.

Their Costa Thread really is something else at the moment...

I hate seeing this twat compared to Suarez. Luis was a bit mad, but he was no thug.
Hrs not our fecking player though is he.

Therefore we can hate and slag him off all we want.

Suppose you'd all love Neville and Evra to have played for us as well ?
He's not our player but it speaks volumes that so many of us wish he was. Evra and Neville are triple A shithouses, and even they fall under the shadow of Roy Keane.
He'll be the new Paul Scholes. All the antics will get brushed under the carpet as that's his character. Also see Wayne Rooney.
But the winner is...

To think we could have had a first XI with both him AND Suarez
This must have been after they had signed Ronaldo and Messi, and before the police kicked the poster's door down to repossess the PC and copy of Football Manager he had nicked from his neighbour.

This'll help the future pursuit of silverware

I'm becoming an organic farmer so that the next generation of Steven Gerrards at least have a slightly flatter hill to battle up.

Eh? It's well known that we were after him two summers ago before he became a star.

Do you think we are too honest?

Costa stamps on Emre last night, Emre rolls around for a moment before getting up to confront Costa.

Costa then has another go at Skrtel.

Phillipe bursts into their penalty area, gets bumped off the ball.

Chelsea players are constantly pulling on Raheem, Phil, Henderson, Lucas....

You only need to breathe on Hazard and he falls over!
Costa should have been sent off at least once.

Coutinho's run was great but he was falling himself, so not a penalty, unlike Skrtel and Costa in the first half.

Henderson pulling on Hazard, Lucas and Can pulling and Markovic doing it a couple of times to Filipe.

Markovic hitting out at Filipe in a way that had it been the other way around, he'd have gone down clutching his face.

You only have to breathe on Sterling, Moreno, Markovic and Balotelli and they fall over too.

Henderson deliberate handball and Lucas could have been off for the foul on Hazard.

Being after and getting are two different things though. I always wanted United to get Robben but that never happened. I also wanted to be a dinosaur growing up, and guess what? I'm still waiting for Richard Attenborough to give me a call...

Obviously they are two different things. Nobody said they weren't. Those are horrendous examples. You wanting someone isn't the same as the club going after them (in our case we bid and met the release clause).

What happened then, if you met the release clause, why did you not get him, I'm sure you could afford a 16/17 year old boy... And considering Arsenal were in for him and missed the boat, not sure it's the allore of London that failed you.... Maybe he sailed into the Mersey and right up the Manchester shipping canals, bypassing your history port'o'call.
