Completely missed the hype train for this.

Can someone give me a quick update - are we actually on the brink of signing Swine's Tiger? Or is this another empty muppet season indulge?
Bild are running it on the front page and apparently they only do that for stuff they know will happen. Also they are meant to be very reliable for Bayern news. Looks like its all but confirmed

He was doing a specific job that game.

You not going to put him in CM for his passing or controlling of the game. Back then we also literally had no midfielders.
He was given a specific role to man mark Ronaldo in a game two and half years and ago and played well but there is no way he should be considered an option in midfield. The lad can barely control his own feet at times never mind control a game.
I know, I was just saying that he could be considered an option for the midfield in particular games where we need to man-mark certain players.

I realised about blomqvist the moment I posted and as I am using caf on the phone editing is such a pain :p

Though cryuff I did think he played in the centre for some reason. To be honest I was 6 when this season took place and I have seen only its season review. And I haven't really read on cryuff much (the son that is). I apologise for my lack of due diligence regarding Phil too. Thought he was a utility player used in midfield often during his years at United
Ah no worries mate understandable given your age. I'm old enough (aka becoming an old fart) to remember the treble season well can't remember Cruyff ever playing CM, in fact he rarely ever played after his first season. Blomqvist only ever played on the left before he took up residence in the treatment room.

P.Neville had some great games at CM during his latter years at United but back then he was pretty much just a fullback.

That year we only had Keane, Scholes and Butt for CM our lack of depth was emphasised by the fact we had to play Beckham (CM) and Giggs (RW) out of position for the final.. In fact we had a pretty small squad in those days only 19-20 players compared to 25-28 these days.

So happy about this signing. I've been a fan since I saw him at Euro 2004. The youngest on the team and easily the best player for Germany at the time. Note to United boards, world class manager would attract world class players.

Which make winning the treble much more impressive.

Also we'd be seeing more chance of Rooney being in midfield rather than Jones.

Another positive note about this signing is that we do not want to see Rooney in midfield again.
Yeah with Carrick, Blind, Herrera, Fellaini, Mata, and hopefully Schweinsteiger and Schneiderin here's hoping we never have to play anyone in there who isn't a proper CM for the foreseeable future.

Indeed, i doubt it would be possible to win the treble these days with a such relatively small squad.
I've posted this in another thread, but we are also very lucky that the spine of that team hardly get injured during the season. Schmikes, Stam, Gary Nev, Keane, Cole and Yorke played 50 games or close to that during that season

Wow, is this really happening? Even Bild is reporting he's already agreed 3 year terms.

Are you serious that Bild is the only (original) source? They are the Daily Mail of Germany.

Getting him would be a huge step in terms of winning the title/champions league in the next few years before Van Gaal retires, very much short term though. Would give us a lot more quality and depth in midfield, and if he stayed fit it'd be brilliant. A best 11 like this is just great all around, if we sign Carvajal and otamendi of course.

Depay Rooney Mata/Di Maria
Schweiny Herrera
Carrick
Shaw Otamendi Smalling Carvajal
De Gea
Carvajal signed a 5 yr extension. That matter is closed

Everyone going to Lufthansa site for departure times.
He will fly in with a private plane. The Bayern players are used to go with them. The club even gets them with one after national team matches so they do not have to stay another night.

Wow. Watching the review I always wondered how saf managed to keep the lot of them happy. I had noticed that the likes of butt rarely played (injuries maybe) and thinking that someone like him or Phil Neville may have helped in our squad now(this was during the moyes season). Though I think butt and Neville may be a tad over rated in comparison to the rest of class of 92?

Wow. Watching the review I always wondered how saf managed to keep the lot of them happy but j guess many weren't injured much so squad looked bigger than it was. I thought butt played quite a lot that season. I would've thought he probably played as many games as scholes roughly.
I wouldn't call them overrated, people rate scholes and giggs and others higher and they are better players but neither butt nor neville were chumps either.

They said Gundogan was "set to be announced" soon by Barca last month. They might know more about Bayern but I feel a bit uncertain.
Let me tell you as a German that follows Bild for ages (and I do not believe only a part of what the media tells me) - this is true. In addition to them the other medias put additional information to the story from other sources.

There is still a medical to make and the contract is not signed - so the transfer is not by a hundred percent (but Bild does not tell different).

(If Bild quotes sources in England or copies other media from other countries they write a lot stupid stuff, too - but that are the guys that sniff around the trainings pitch every day and have their guys in the club that tell...)

Success breeds success. A player like Schweinsteiger can lift us to another level and lead us to titles.

The players he leads to success can then go on and do the same for the next generation.

Winning is an art in itself, the psychology behind it, getting yourself and team over the line is huge. Fergie recognised it and it's why he kept his winners around and it's why he put emphasis on cups as insignificant as the League Cup.

We need to get back to winning ways and having winners like him around will only help that. Even if it's for just 2 or 3 years.
Completely agree with this. A lot went wrong in the Fergie to Moyes transition but the speed at which the winning mentality disappeared that had been built over 25 years and ran throughout the club was incredible.

It's a really difficult thing to get back but signing players like Schweinsteiger will definitely help.

So...I have woken up to news that we are going to sign Schweinsteiger?. Wow.

Are there any Bayern fans around? What has his form been like the last season or two?

Can turn out to be a brilliant signing or he could spend the next three years on the treatment table, with I am sure plenty to keep him company. I guess worth a risk at the fee and wages mentioned, which aren't exhorbitant.

Though signing him shouldn't mean that we don't go for a more defensive minded midfielder.

You would have been wowed... 6 years ago, hes still decent but unspectacular, less of a risk than some and reasonably cheap... sensible signing.
It's exactly how I feel right now. I hope my usual negativity is affecting me because so many caftards seem extremely happy about this signature, I hope they're right.

Somewhere in your mind, touching a nerve
So if we sig him and schneiderlin, do we need to offload anyone in our midfield? Seems like there are quite a few players for 3 positions

Carrick
Schweiny
Schneiderlin
Blind
Fellaini
Herrera
Mata
Perreira

I'm the same as you on this one, if he is being brought in to share the #6 role with Carrick and we are still going to get Schneiderlin I'll feel better about it.

Europa.
This feels like we are signing another club's Scholes or Giggs. I'm sure no one would say no to a 31-year-old Scholes or Giggs.

Honours:

  • 8 time Bundesliga champion
  • 7 German Cups
  • 2 German league Cups
  • 2 German Supercups
  • 1 Uefa Champions League
  • 1 Uefa Super cup
  • 1 Fifa Club World Cup
  • World Cup Winner
  • 2x Third Place in the World Cup
  • European Cup Runner-up
Hopefully he can adapt well.
