It was! Dutch took the #1 in the world to the brink, but the injury to one of our star players did cost us I feel. Now if they only stopped fecking hugging after every damn ball contact, it would not take ages.

What a great win by our basketball team vs Spain yesterday. Were loosing basically the whole game or most of it but took the lead near the end and in the end Saric blocked Gasol's shot for 72:72. He had a poor game but who cares, it was worth it for that block alone. Whole team was immense, especially Babo Bogdanovic.
Forget footballers, they're cowards, this team is the shit. I love those guys, and the coach, Aco Petrovic, is crazier than all of them.

I actually came here to comment on how bad the volleyball commentary is.

When Peurto Rico issued their last challenge in the first set the commentator had no idea what was going on and then when we'd clearly seen it hit the serbian blockers fingers twice, once in super slow-mo the commentator was like "oh... I guess she must have hit the net or something"

Are cycling crashes like that relatively common on the tougher tracks or should there be some concerns raised about the suitability of the track? The commentators mentioned treacherous a lot more often than I'd have expected them to.

I don't think there were any more crashes than expected, it's just normally they would happen in the sprints, which typically would be on a wide, flat section. That or random collisions in the peleton.

They were partly notable because they happened to the leaders, and there's not much the organisers can to about them occurring. On a one-day climbers race, the risk/reward balance to riders pushing their luck is always going to be tilted.

On the other hand, the concrete did look particularly unforgiving to any crashes that did happen, which they could have done something about. I think Boardman was critical of it ahead of the event.

I'm watching the hockey and the pitch is wet, not just damp, it's so soggy a spray kicks up at times. I know this is actually deliberate, the artificial surface is water dressed because apparently it's better for the players, but I can't imagine what it must feel like.

Anyone on here played on such a pitch - hockey or otherwise? Do they actually use water dressed artificial turf in any other sports?

Yeah it's a water based Astro turf pitch. Massive sprinklers coat it every hour or so the keep it soaking.

In fairness the water flying up looks worse than it is, hockey shoes are very grippy so you don't slip as much as you'd think. A lot more forgiving than old sand based astro turf which would flay you alive.

Plays like a carpet. Decent to play football on too, with the right shoes.

I know next to nothing about hockey but yesterday our striker went down on his knees to score a tap-in and our commentator said "excellent technique going on the knees like that, how it's supposed to be". I can imagine that's a very painful thing to do if the surface isn't soaking wet.

Skinless shins and elbows are an occupational hazard but it isn't so bad on the water based pitches, they're made from longer softer artificial turf and are pretty soaked so you can slide around a fair bit without skinning yourself.

Sand based ones were literally torture.

That's really interesting. Cheers for that. I've seen the water before on TV but I've never stood on it in real life so it's hard visualise how it must feel.

Do they use the technique for preparing other kinds of pitches now? I'm thinking of football and rugby really which aren't nice on old style astro turf.

I'm so old we used to play on grass and certainly the ability to slip a little as you turn, go down knee first etc were quite important. It's interesting to see that they've found what looks like a way of mimicking that forgiving nature of grass with an artificial surface. Expensive though I would imagine.

Especially if you know the work and sacrifices he put into it, you appreciate it so much more (ofc counts for probably any athlete but still). Now a Final tonight alongside greats like Phelps and Le Clos He's reached his objective so can just enjoy it without pressure and hope for the best.

Today looks pretty boring.
