You're horribly wrong. Cleverley wasn't regarded at all, it was only he when he started excelling on his Watford loan stint in the Championship that people started to notice him.
Yep. He was scoring goals for Watford, got him noticed by a lot. There was very little hype about him before that.

Coming to Mctominay, good for him. To play for United in a meaningful game at Old Trafford against a very decent European team with history. Great stuff.

All credit to Jose. He played a kid in a key area in a meaningful match. Very easily could have got away with playing Blind or moving Lindelof or Jones into CM.

Constantly at the STD clinic.
He seems rather unfazed by it all which is good, fairly unadventurous but JoMou's probably told him to keep it simple at all times.

He's a bit like Fellaini without any of his outstanding qualites at the moment and he's slotted in nicely in that role.
People always say this yet I've almost never seen a footballer "fazed" by the moment.

He's a decent player, can be very pleased with his performance yesterday.

I doubt people looked at Matic as a youth player and thought he was outstanding. Some players just need to be effective at the simple things, especially in a deep lying position.

There were times last night when he also looked for a defence splitting pass from deep. The confidence to play those sort of balls will only grow the more he plays.
Actually matic was very highly rated as a teenager and considered a coup by chelsea's academy. He came as an attacking midfielder and was only sold so they could get Luiz.

Give it a rest, Maradona. There are times when sarcasm is the only legitimate response. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect patience and General goodwill towards one of our own young lads in the infancy of his senior career.
I am saying if he works hard, he might become a special talent, is that too hard to comprehend? Clearly he is not a top talent right now. I think some people fail to understand they dont have too call every academy graduate special or incredible or wonderkid.

Actually, Matić was turned into a #6 only at Benfica by Jorge Jesus, before he always was an attacking #8.

Benfica wanted money, but Chelsea offered some players to choose, and Jesus' picked Matić. They didn't have to sell, they didn't consider him worth it, and it was only evaluated as 2,5-5M, in the transfer then.

Lukaku was a highly rated teenage player which Kane is not at that time. Kane worked so hard, he just got a lot of better over 3 years so he finally becomes one of the world's deadliest striker.

True, there are a lot of players that are similar at Mctominay's age. For an example, nobody paid more attention to Greizmann and didn't see how special is he until 2012-13 when he helped Sociedad to the fourth-placed finish in the 2012/13 season after 5 years playing for the club and it caught Atletico Madrid's attention so they got him early at cheap before its too late. Griezmanns has gotten a lot better over a couple of years playing for Sociedad and right now he's completely different player from 2012/13. Kante was like that, people many thought he was average but nobody knew how good he is until he moved to EPL then all of sudden he took EPL by the storm and helped Lecister to win the premier league.

If Mctominay is on right track, work hard and intend to be a lot better and learn best from Pogba and Matic and work, he could become very good CM.

Matic didn't join Chelsea academy. He joined Chelsea when he was 21 and he barely played before loaned out and sold to Benfica.

Kane was a highly rated teenager and was a great youth player. His hype just died down after his loans becuase he didn't get to play much on them.

I haven't seen s single post that suggests he's a wonderkid. You have him farmed out to Burnley already. I just suggested he deserves a bit more time before we decide on his mediocrity.

Well done to him on his past few performances. The 2nd half vs Benfica was probably the best I've ever seen him play - U23s included.

If he ever learns how to control the game, just remember that I was the first to nickname him “Metronomy” in this post.

If there's one thing we learned from Cleverley, it's that United fans haven't a fvcking clue how good their youth are.

Leave him have a few games and we examine the situation. He didn't look out of place.

Its off topic, but the Cleverley not being rated before the Watford loan spell is simply not true.
He went on two pre season tours before he was loaned to Watford. Scored a goal or two as well from what I can remember.

Some rumours around here that he has turned down a call up to the Scottish national team, he had previously said he saw his international future there as he didn't think he would make it for England. Seems the first team games have given him a confidence boost which is good

So did Cathcart and Possebon. They went on the 2008 trip which was the year of Euros so our squad needed numbers. In the next season, he only played in the pre-season match against Valencia which was at OT.

I don't believe that. The SFA are run by idiots, they probably didn't even realise he was eligible. He doesn't even have a cap at youth level.

Is it just me or does he look like a young Gordon Ramsey?

Might be what Jose sees in him. If I remember rightly there was a podcast that featured a long interview with Fletcher and the interviewer brought up a quote that was incredibly complimentary towards him. Saying that he was our most important player tactically.
To be fair, Fletcher had a habit of being world bloody class against Chelsea. Particularly during Jose's first spell at Stamford Bridge.

He just wants more time I think. See if anything happens with England.
Even with England's issues at CM, seems like a stretch, whereas Scotland have some decent wide talent in Tierney/Robertson (one will play LW presumably unless they play 3 at the back), Forrest, Fraser and Burke, but almost nothing in central midfield under 30. And with the Euros and World Cup expanding, it's not crazy to think he could be first choice in a team that qualifies.

I don’t see him getting in the England youth teams either but his career has taken some unexpected turns this season. Hard to justify him in the current u21 squad but it wouldn’t be a stretch to have him in the u20s.
