You win the internet with that comment. I hope Lindelof becomes a world class defender but I just can't see it. If this was City Pep would have already washed his hands of him and be planning to sign Kalidou Koulibaly or Milan Škriniar in January. I would not buy players from Benfica again as they stitched us up. I believe Kostas Manolas is available for free next summer and Jonathan Tah has a release clause of just 22m, we could get both and shift Lindelof and Smalling and our defensive options would improve immensely.
What? Pep kept on playing Stones because he trusted him in the long run with his passing ability. And why would one be so sure that Tah, Manolas or Skriniar would be world beaters from the get go? You must have missed Rudiger who have been total shit since joining Chelsea from Roma.

Was brilliant tonight. Deservedly gets 5 out of 5 together with Granqvist and Olsen in the papers. Really hoping he’s bringing this form back to Manchester.

That's a bit unfair isn't it? I mean Sweden played roughly 200 minutes against Italy without conceding a goal. I think Lindelöf did well tonight, not as good as in Stockholm, but he did well.
This, he played very solid in both games. He's alot better when paired with an experienced defender a la Luisao or Granqvist though. Sadly we dont have much of that :wenger:

He was amazing. Granqvist is still our best defender, but Lindelof was great.

Strange how he can provide these performances in games bigger than he plays for you, and against Italy, but not in english football. Something is really odd.

And for all of you guys who actually thought Mourinho bought a shit-player. You dont think Mourinho had watched him? You dont think United av scouts? He had obviously played good for both Benfica and Sweden. Idiots.

Never been overly impressed with Andreas Gronqvist before, and there's a reason he's playing in Russia, but he and Victor Lindelöf were outstanding tonight.
He has been our best defender since Mellberg quit. Always great for Sweden. Sad that he never played on a greater level than Krasnodar and Genoa. He is a great player.

He's playing in Russia because they pay him €4 million per season (after taxes).

Maybe we should get him to wear a Swedish jersey under his United jersey next game then.

Decent performance in both legs. Can undoubtedly get better in a Utd shirt. Sad to say, I don't see Smalling getting much better unfortunately.

One swallow doesn't make a summer but even as someone who wants him gone, I'll have to say he played very well tonight. Still, Italy being absolutely dire played a huge part.

Did both feet put in good performances as well?

Not seen a lot of him granted, but when I have just had him down as a solid pro nothing more, thought he was a few years older as well - Totally forgot that he had a brief spell at Wigan Athletic a decade ago when they were in the Premier League.

I have to say I thought he was a passenger in their defence tonight. Lustig and Granqvist were the true defensive warriors in that display.

Happy for the lad though.
How is a defender a passenger against a team with so much possession?

Getting excellent and positive reviews everywhere except this place which is fairly typical of the negativity resounding this place.

Him and the other Swedish centre backs were great last night. Dealt with everything that came into the box, was commanding and physical, no nonsense defending. I suspect this is what Mourinho saw in him when he decided to bring him in.

Not sure I agree, it really depends on who is swallowing that one time for me!

Idiots? I understand you rate him and we all want him to succeed.. but have you seen him in a United shirt?.

United need Lindelof to start replicating last night's performance in a red shirt. Played his part in keeping Italy out, no sign of the nervy, awkward looking guy that has been seen at OT.

He played well, but to be honest, it's a lot easier playing in a 10 men defense.

Probably just shocked at how wrong and bad your opinion was.
Time will tell who's right and who's wrong. If Lindelof becomes a top class defender then you and all the Lindelof fanboys will have been proven correct however if he continues to warm the bench because he continues to be trash then my opinion would have been spot on. BTW I am not the only one around here who doesn't rate Lindelof. I would say around 40% of posters don't rate him and regret signing him.

I don't understand your theory here, you're saying it's easy to defend whilst under pressure for about 80 minutes. Makes no sense.
It is much easier. Roy Hodgson famously said that he could take any group of fit amateur players and train them to shut out Manchester United with six months of coaching. The less space a defender has to mark the easier it is generally.

It is easier in terms of how much space you need to cover and also don't test the pace of the defenders that much. Although us and Mourinho play quite often deep like that so why can't he do it for us?

This has nothing to do with his yesterday's performance, which was very solid.
