Actually, when I watch him play, his style and the way he plays reminds me of a blend between Matic and Carrick.
That's a very high praise, would be one of the perfect DM if you mix those 2.

Hopefully he will grow into Carrick type player who can find a pass from deep.

Very harsh comments in here considering he’s a young player coming through. Thought we were meant to give them more time than others do?...

Thought he played ok. Just needs to do more when given the chances as they won’t come around too often. Doesn’t want to fall in the Tom Cleverly-bracket

One thing I really like at the minute is that Mourinho can being through players like Scott in a similar environment to how Fergie brought them through.

For Moyes with Januzaj and Van Gaal with his various youngsters, there always felt like a lack of pressure on them due to the under performing first team. They had that youthful confidence that was a breath of fresh air but in reality they weren’t getting a good education in playing in a competetive side, learning from experienced professionals who make winning a habit.

I think that’s changed now, McTominay doesn’t come into the side because we need him. Mouriho doesn’t just say “do your best out there please, that’s all I can ask of you”. He says “OK Scott, I’m calling on you today because you have a very specific task and I want you to do it well. You’re putting Pogba on the bench and a lot will be made of they so you’ve got to show what you can do. Matic will be right next to you so listen to him and use him.”

I can’t imagine what that scenario can do for a young lad’s confidence.

Solid performance for his age. Big, physical and good with the ball. some of his decisions were a bit slow in coming, but that'll come. He's further proof that we should ship the tall Belgian off anywhere that will take him.

When I saw Lingard back then I can see he got some attribute to play for United but with McTominay, I'm not convinced with him apart from his physical attribute.

But who knows may be in his late age he will start showing his true quality or may be in the next few years he will improve massively. It's better promote and giving player from our own academy chance rather than waste 25m-40m on average player.

And by the way, great picture him as a kid with Sir Alex.

He's obviously neither been exceptional nor been outright crap, so all I can say at the moment is that he is a useful option to have since we are short on midfielders. If we need to give Matic a rest, we can go with him, Herrera and Pogba to mask his weaknesses and can reasonably expect to grind out results with that midfield.

Long term, I think he needs to go out on loan.

Wow! This is amazing! Good for this young man!!! There’s been a lot of hard work from this young man and his parents to even get him to this point! Good on Jose to give him the opportunity. That’s what dreams are made of:) This is special.

Just reading that and imagining what it would have meant if I were that young man gave me goosebumps.

He will suffer the same fate as Lingard and to some extent Carrick. Because he is not flashy people will ignore how good he has been in what he does. You can’t have a midfield full of Pogbas or an attack full of players like Sanchez. You need player like McTominay to do the simple and keep things flowing. He reminds a lot of carrick.

I disagree with Carrick, everyone knew his value to the team in his pomp. If McTominay makes it to that level people will like him

He does the simple things right; Keeps it ticking. Grew into that 2nd half too, tried a few ambitious balls. Should be picked ahead of Fellaini given the contract issues.

Not sure if he will make it but right not, a handy option.

Excellent post. This is what dreams are made of.
When you see two legendary managers like Jose and SAF together, you sort of understand what a great club this is. Yes, likes of Pep, Conte, Klopp have achieved a lot, but none of them have the aura of these two managers.

Funny how so many were saying Jose's personality wouldn't suit us.

Deserves to be playing.

Right now he is in better form than Herrera/Fellaini.

Jose dropped Pogba to give him a kick up the arse after the spurs game, we won and McTom his replacement had a good game.

Excellent option to have and exciting for the future. The more games he plays the better he will be. I'd like to see us go for a midfield 3 of Matic, McTom and Pogba to see how that works. Could be the answer

Personally I thought he was fantastic in the second half against Huddersfield. Centre midfield is the hardest position in football and he's a 21 year old where his job is positional discipline and game intelligence (knowing when to go forward, when to play it safe etc). These are traits which develop with age when playing in certain systems with certain players, for a 21 year old coming onto the united first team of course he's initially going to play it safe as he doesn't want to be the one to give the ball away or mess up his first team chance. I think he showed glimpses of the player he could be for us in the second half, especially when he started growing in confidence and going forward more.

When Rashford broke through one of the youth coaches said he has a lot more in his locker but he's keeping it simple and he'll play his natural game as he grows more confident, we're now seeing that from Rashford, he tries more tricks and flicks than he ever did when he first broke through and I think the same will be true of Scott.

There were a couple of times when the Huddersfield players (experienced defenders in their mid 20's-30's) couldn't get near him. I think we'll end up seeing a great midfielder here.

Looking more and more confident playing in the league. If he can reach even Fletcher's level, I would be happy.

Oh, but it took quite some time for Carrick to be recognized at United. At first he was mostly deemed useless, then there was a long period of a few claiming he did lot’s of important invisible stuff like defensive positioning and dictating play with simple passes etc, with others ridiculing this notion. Then the Caf was mostly split, so when United did well he was lauded by one half, and when we struggled the other half would come out to claim he was overrated and ‘they never really bought into this invisibility stuff’. At least that’s how I remember it.

This happened to Fletcher as well. Lingard is now the same age that Carrick was upon arriving at the club. It will be interesting. Of course, Tom Cleverly split the crowd in a similar way. We’ll see how things pan out with McTominay.

However, I predict that he will split the supporters for years to come if he stays on.

I had the impression that Carrick was always seen as a very valuable member of the team. He was no Keane, so people were probably critical in the beginning. He was always a key part in our most successful seasons so 90 percent of the people appreciated him. You will always find the odd idiot who doesnt rate good players, just fast forward to 2018 and check out some threads here

SAF must be very proud of McTominay. And looking at his photo as a kid, I'm amazed that he has grown up to be very tough physically. I wish he has bright future with Man United.
He was 5'6" like two years ago. Insane growth spurt.

Already did, no need to predict nor wait that long.

McTominay is not the flashy-star type of player and tend to do the simple basic yet effective things when playing, yup just like Carrick and Fletcher, not many see their values initially and will take a long while for them to be noticeable. No worries. I remember Carrick and Fletcher getting ridiculed.. some of the criticism then was good but a lot is harsh and irrelevant. Cleverley decide to stop fulfilling his potential after that injury. What McTominay need to do next is continue improving.

But come on, are people seriously expecting him to be world-beater already? The kid is doing everything right and efficiently. It's what Mourinho described as "mature performances" ~ he follows instructions, keep possession well, positionally sound, make good movements in the final third, doesn't hide and always available to receive passes, good passing, helps defending and will make tactical fouls whenever necessary, good temperament on-field, pretty much a team player, used his body well against opponents, etc. I'm sure many fellow posters with avid-sharp eyes here are able to see this too. Relax.

I totally agree. I remember when we signed Carrick. It was definitely not a unified camp of people being excited. It didn’t make any sense to most. He wasn’t shiny and he was understated in the way he played and quietly building on his credibility in the fan base. Many of those you mentioned above were/are exactly like that and I agree that McTominay would be no different. Heck, even Matic split the camp. I can’t remember any signing that was as positive as Sanchez from the whole camp.

Ultimately, what matters is the manager believes in the player.

This is true. Without being the same type of player or having the same strengths as Carrick, yes I absolutely agree that even if he develops into a very good CM that we'll have a fanbase of split opinions on him because he isn't an instant top class talent or someone with a fancy name from a foreign country that we bought. If he just does the job very well we'll constantly have fans talking about which players they want to replace him, like with Smalling.

That's because he was playing at Chelsea like he is for us currently. Not been great the last 2 months or so. When he first joined he must have been playing on adrenaline or something.

Admittedly, I don't follow our reserves / academy that much, but even then McTominay was never a name that was mentioned here as being one to watch.

I think he has been pretty decent for us when he has played, but it's hard to judge whether or not he is a top talent.

I want to add that if McTominay progresses it will set an example along with Lingard and Rashford to the Academy lads; work hard, keep improving and learn the game and follow instructions so don't worry about flashy blingy football - You can have a place at United and make it through in different ways.

He's more mature than Pogba as a player, which is pretty crazy. What makes me laugh is that Pogba is capable of doing everything he can and more, yet Pogba 'can't play in a midfield two'. Utter rubbish, Pogba needs to sort himself out.

As for McTominay, I like him and don't mind seeing him in the team at all. Reminds me of Fletcher, a player who I originally didn't rate but proved me horrendously wrong. I think McTominay can have a similar influence over the coming years.
How can people say he's more mature than Pogba when he's not even played a big game yet? And Pogba's played well in a 2 plenty of times, I reckon if you ask McTominay to play in a 2 man midfield against the bigger teams, it's likely he'd look out of his depth.

I really don't understand why so many in here bash one player to praise another.

It was a mature performance not because he was playing some big opponent like Man City it Spurs.

However, for a young man with minimal first team experience, displacing the supposed best player Pogba at the club and starting the match is a big event, particularly for himself.

There will be lots of anticipation, anxiety and pressure and despite this, Scott showed the composure to play with his team mates, the ability to stick to the manager’s instruction (which Pogba was accused of not doing in the previous match), the presence of mind to keep play ticking along in the mid-field and the resilience to maintain those after a battering in the penalty box.

And mind you, Huddersfield were playing like ruffians and the referee wasn’t helping. It would have been easy and perhaps understandable to make mistakes or go into hiding, but that did not happen.

How many times has the Caf lamented that players like Mhikitaryan went into hiding, played within themselves or let the game pass them by? I think supporters should be thoroughly thrilled that we potentially have a youngster who grew up the Manchester United way, that possesses qualities the current manager appreciates and also appears to show good mentality.

I am not saying that he’s definitely going to make it here in the long term, but I am loathe to write anyone off at such a young age. United is as good a platform as he will ever get for his career and I always recall the pride that SAF had when he mentions how the academy has produced so many players for the Premier League and launched many good careers.

I tend to think that fans who claim “Scott shows nothing that proves he is United quality” are probably looking superficially at the dribbling, mazy runs, Hollywood passes etc., but the entire outfield ten can’t be trying these things all the time, can they?

Let’s wait and see. Enjoy the journey and stop being so negative. (not directed at the poster/post I quoted)

He seems to understand his role better. Something that usually comes with maturity in a CM.
