Early signs are not good.

Though most of us here wrote off Lindelof and he's looked better lately.

Will give him more time, but I don't think he looks an upgrade on Herrera at all.

Maybe it's a language issue but he needs to get with the program quickly.

He was alright but still too rough around the edges.

Herrera is quite comfortably better than him right now IMO.

I still feel there's a player in him, but I'm not seeing the close control, ability in tight spaced and ability to drive forward with the ball, that he was supposedly regarded for. I'm still hopeful it comes with time. He's adjusting it a new league, country and language which isn't easy. Plus he's been a a part of a terrible team for most of the time too. I'd judge him properly once he gets more chances in this team.

Is playing on the right stifling him a little? He has to since the left is Pogba's.

There is talent there, just needs to adjust quickly to the league. Needs to get a bit more physically stronger.

He'll come good. Lindelof took time and his quality is obvious to see now for others, should be the same with Fred. There is a fantastic player in him.

The role he is expected to play requires the maximum amount of integration with the rest of the team. He needs to be aware of the runs by opposing full backs , his holding midfielder and keep track of forward runs by our wingers. To play this effectively he'll need a lot more time training and playing within this team.

He does have the technical ability but seems to lack the awareness and that seems like a direct result of not playing much. I believe he'll be much much better if played regularly and quite certain that even OGS knows that.

At shaktar he was brilliant. Against good teams in the champs league not just the Ukrainian lot.

There is a player in there people are being very harsh he’s been in and out and never had a consistent run of games. I think he can become very good for us if managed well.

Our most stupid midfield signings in recent years for me have been Schneiderlin and paying over the odds for fecking Fellaini on transfer deadline day. Fred hasn't played enough to be properly considered a bad signing
From what I've seen of him, I just can't think who in their righteous mind saw him play and though this is a 50m player.

He has looked weak and shaky from moment one. He simply seems to lack the awareness. Way too clumsy and sloppy in possession for a midfielder. It is harsh but he’s 25 and doesn’t look like a improvement on what we have.

Give him more chances in easier games, but so far he hasn’t done any favours for himself, nothing to suggest we can depend on him.

Spent 50m on a downgrade for Herrera. Ridiculous money spending. Things like these make our spending go sky rocket without nothing to show for.

Another Morgan Schneiderlin for me. we needed a Carrick replacement not a downgrade on Herrera.
`
Agreed. To be fair we have not seen much of him, but what we have seen has been really disappointing, especially for that price tag. I've seen him hit some nice passes, but he loses the ball way to often and thats really a big problem as a CM.

Needs help with developing a football brain. I’d keep him in side and be patient- he could grow once he’s settled ... in and out won’t help him.

I sadly doubt there are many cases of player developing a football brain at 25. You either have it or don’t.

There's no point in playing him in a non-defensive position. Pereira would be better than him in the position he is being played while Fred should be played in the position that Pereira was playing at the start of the season.

Maybe I watch a different game then.
passing is not his problem but strength which to me is a minor thing to get over.
Some of his passes were really good,I must be watching a different game.

The guy can't defend for shit. No he certainly shouldn't be anchoring the midfield.

The only thing he's got going for him is his attacking through balls.

Here's the post I made last time you tried to argue this. Ignore it again if you want.

Yesterday Fred made the same number of tackles and more interceptions than Matic (our defensive midfielder) despite playing 40 minutes less. Offensively he managed zero shots, zero chances created and zero through balls. He is not an offensive player at all, he wasn't at Shaktar, he isn't for Brazil and he will most likely flop at United if we expect him to play like this. We should utilise his strengths and play him in a defensive position just like Guardiola would have done if Shaktar had accepted City's bid for him.

Very good post. Lindelof this time one year ago looked suspect as hell and now look after a season to acclimatise with the PL and understand how the team play. A lot of Fred's issues are with timing. He's late into some tackles, sometimes his pass is rushed but I like his intentions. he'll bring a lot of quality once he settles in properly. Way more potential than Herrera going forward imo.

Early days, way too much hype over anything good nowadays and the reverse if someone has a bad game.

Fred and Pogba isnt working together, since Pogba is the guy that can lose the ball and take the risk in that area, Fred currently isnt doing as any good, far too unreliable and with him and Pogba, leaves us open defensively, while both go for risky balls offensively and Pogba is our star man. Herrera or Pereira are much better in that role and have a more reliable first touch, while keeping it safer in the middle. Fred is a bit rebundant to be honest and i dont know really why we bought him. I mean with Pogba, Herrera and Pereira, it doesnt make any sense. If Pogba wouldnt be here and Pereira on loan, yeah, but currently, he is surplus to requirements.

On FM, i would loan him out to Everton for a season to get him game time and up to speed. His current form doesnt deserve a lot of starts but he needs game time to improve.

His first touch is like a grenade.

In theory, I like what he’s supposed to add to the team. Especially on the counter attack. But I can’t shake the feeling that he’s just a bit shite. I said as much at the start of the season and I’ve certainly seen enough now; he’s got a mountain to climb to get ahead of Herrera, for me.

I’ll caveat that by saying he’s clearly better than what he’s showing so far. He must be...

Your post was shit then and it still is. Making a tackle doesn't make you a midfield anchor. He wasn't an anchor at Shaktar and he won't be an anchor here. Being shit going forward has no bearing on him being shit defensively. Pogba made more tackles too. Let's have him anchor the midfield shall we?

You can keep living in fairyland where Guardiola apparently rates him as the best anchor in the world too. Despite you know, no manager ever using him as an anchor.

Or you can just watch him play and see he can't read the game defensively for shit.

You wouldnt think he was one of the best players in a team reaching CL knockout stages the last few years. If we believe reports, City were after him too at some point. His technique is not on an elite level and no real pre season, plus hasnt played much this season and the changes that come with a new environment...

He is definitely better than he is showing, but he needs time, meaning on the pitch and to adapt. I remember when a poster from Ukraine was telling us in the summer to not expect much this season, since the level of their league is really low and Fred would need time to get used to things. I dont think he is on the level currently expected, he needs to improve and adapt, otherwise he wont make it at United.

No manager used KDB and Silva as central midfielders before pep. They got converted from wide players/number 10 players into central midfielders orchestrating the game from deep. Fred has the attributes to play in that system for pep as DM. But maybe not for the other managers. And there's not a problem with both approaches. If City strucure out of possession is mostly solid enough with two attacking mids in the centre then it shouldn't be a problem with more box to box mid in the DM.

I know I've posted something like this before, but it just baffles me so I'm going again.

The more I think about this signing the more I just can't get me head around how on earth it happened.

He's absolutely nothing like a Mourinho midfielder (for better or for worse) and he can't have been a player Mourinho saw much of as a result of the fact he played his club football in Ukraine. Yet somehow the club, Mourinho and Woodward were all convinced that he was worth paying a huge amount of money on in an off season where the board and manager were at loggerheads about spending large sums of money on players who weren't worth it.

In his time here we've definitely seen some glimpses of something, but I don't think those glimpses have been anywhere near the level of 'scouts, manager and board agree that this is one of the best players on the market this summer'. All of which would be a bit more understandable if he was 19 or 20, because he plays a bit like an excited teenager who hasn't quite worked out which bit of his body goes where or when he needs to be pragmatic, but he's 25 and should be on the cusp of entering his prime.

I dunno, I'm sure the step up from Ukraine to the UK is very tough and he's struggling with the jump. I'm sure he's a better player than he's shown, and I still hope he'll become a very useful player for us. I just can't get my head around all the moving parts of the transfer.

It's no wonder you think Fred is bad defensively when you refuse to accept that actual defending like making tackles and intercepting opposition passes don't count towards being good in that role. The praise that Kante got when he played there for Leicester and Chelsea and Herrera got when he won our POTY in that position must have blown your mind.

Fred did play in a defensive role for Shaktar and the best available source for City news on the Internet said that Guardiola wanted him to play defensive midfielder for his team too. What exactly is your rebuttal to these points? Just insisting they aren't true and everyone is wrong but you? Do you think the youtuber who made a 17 minute video about Fred which repeatedly emphasised his defensive skills and how he was most useful in deep positions did no research and just made it all up? Do you also think that Sam Lee lied about Guardiola wanting Fred to replace Fernandinho for City? Was the Shaktar president also lying when he went on record that City bid for Fred in January? When sites like whoscored.com take objective measures of a player's contribution to a football match and use them characterise Fred's strongest attribute as being his 'defensive contributions' are they also wrong or lying?

Your arguments are ridiculous and seem to agenda driven rather than based on any fair assessment of the player. Clicking your profile tells me you have Fred as your lowest rated player this season with a clearly unbiased 3.2... massively out of sync with this forum's average rating of the player. Go ahead and tell me everyone on this forum is also shit and wrong for not agreeing with you about how terrible Fred is.

Hardly going to be a language issue, as they both speak Portuguese! Lack of basic insight into our players is astonishing at times!!!

Still early days, but I just don't think he's very good, nor does he suit our midfield. We need someone who can dictate play from deep imo. Also, his first touch since coming here has been nothing short of woeful at times. Hopefully he gets better, he may just need time ala Lindelof.

It's interesting to note that Jose didn't think Fred could play in our side till we were defensively better. It's not exactly good to hear that your holding /defensive midfielder needs a better defense to be able to play effectively.

I'm not putting much stock into anything Jose said about a player or the squad or the club over the last few months. He clearly had his own agenda which was to make sure everybody knew that none of the struggles the team was experiencing was his fault.

He needs to get out of his comfort zone and get himself forward a lot more. Olle will be trying to get more out of him from an attacking point of view. You can be sure of that. He needs to get amongst the goalscorers if he's to make any form of impact. His future with us is dependent on him becoming an attacking midfielder. He just doesn't cut it playing in the role he's playing.

I thought he looked good in the first half yesterday, much better than he has any other time this season at least. He pulled off a couple of very good passes and I like that he tries to move things along quickly. It did seem that every good moment was followed by an equally sloppy moment though.

He needs time and I doubt that he has much confidence at the moment.
