He's had a bad season but selling him now, when his value is low, would be beyond stupid. Calling him 'done' already is stupid for a guy his age. Everybody can have a bad season, especially if injuries and suspensions just pile up. He scored 23 goals the year before, so let's wait and see before writing him off.
Although I agree calling him done is premature, next season will be his last season at United unless he puts in a 20+ goal season or he’s happy to play second fiddle to the main striker. It’s essentially make or break for him.
People keep talking about the previous season but it was a purple patch in the second half of the season that inflated that goal tally, he wasn’t brilliant all year. And before last season he was putting in 10-15 goals a season with a chunk of those goals coming in the Europa league or league cup.

The Caf is a strange place. Martial was excellent last season and scored a hat full. This season he's been poor but there could be any number of reasons for that. He's also been in and out of the team with injury.

Whilst I agree there's an attitude issue/lethargy with him I don't think he should be written off. Especially when we have a squad which still has Mata and James in. There's clearly space for him to stay.

Also what 'huge' wage is he on?
His wage is more than Rashford. He’s on over £250k a week

Last season wouldn't have been considered a purple patch for me if the goalscoring in this one, despite the injuries, was a little better.

Don’t think that’s true. Do you have a source?
The Athletic.

Here's the leaked list, it's a couple of seasons old and players like Rashford have had a pay rise to £200k a week. I think De Gea signed a new deal as well during this time? Can't remember:

The thing with Martial is not the question of - if he is valuable enough to be a squad player - because he is. He is better than players like James and mata etc.

The problem with Martial is more about if that squad status stays forever. He is arguably 2nd best LW to Rashford currently and after this season some may even rate Pogba better than Martial as a LW.

What happens when we get Sancho? Is Martial our 2nd, 3rd or 4th best LW?

What about as a striker? After this season Cavani has arguably taken over being our best striker and the only reason people may have doubts is his age. Some people may say Greenwood is ready to take over a ST role in a few years.

What happens when we get a Kane or a Haaland? Is Martial our 3rd best striker and 4th best LW?

do we keep him until he becomes that level or do we try our best to get rid of him whilst we can use his wages and transfer fees to help us buy his direct replacements in the squad?

the main area I still feel like he may be here in the future is because he plays a bit like a deep lying forward or a false 9 - which we may keep to an alternative tactic to our plan A of a more in the box striker. I personally thought VDB as a shadow second striker had this potentially replaced in the squad (as a false 9 type player) but Ole has hardly used him there.

Last season was his first season playing as a 9. And was the first time since his debut season under LVG, where he was backed by the manager to be a regular starter. (Considering how he was treated by Mourinho, I don't think his performances were that bad. Certainly no worse than our other wide attackers. Heck his form probably prolonged the man's stay towards the end of his reign.) Half of last season he was being supplied by the likes of Lingard, James and Pereira. All thing considered, the goals tally he ended up with and his overall hold up and link up play was very good IMO.

There are no excuses for his performances this year, but considering his best spell at the club was not that long ago, I'd give him another season to show he can get back to that level. If he was to replicate this kind of season again, then I'd be all for getting rid.
He is a talented player, clearly, but for me, and I have always said this, he is far too static when we are not in possession. So I would leave him out of the team based on that.
My ideal forward player moves constantly, giving the opposition defenders decisions to make all the time, dragging them all over the pitch. Look at Cavani, Luis Suarez, Robin Van Persie etc, always moving.

Maybe he is worth a punt for one more year but his work rate needs to increase

You don't need to go for those players, Antonio from West Ham has that type of movement and work ethic too

We are ‘taking a punt’ with a player who has been here years and apparently takes home around 200k per week salary.

I doubt he wants to move. The guy has had it super easy at our club so far. Constantly has underwhelmed for years now despite his obvious skill set in certain areas.

He never will be the complete striker or left winger that is needed sadly. He can do a job but is a master of nothing apart from the odd dribble into the box.

The last time he looked world class was a friendly against Real Madrid. When their defenders didn’t bother to actually put a tackle in because it was a friendly haha

We just cant rely on him. Yes he can be good but how many games? He has not developed into the player we hoped he could, but we need to aim higher

We need him for another year as Mason needs another year to learn how to play 9 and Cavani can’t play a full season by himself. I also don’t think we will sign Kane this season - if we do, we should ship him. He may do well in Serie A.

Most of our contract these days are performance linked so Martial 250k pw contract most probably was never paid fully this season. If we are in market for a striker then we should ship him off and use that money to fund that purchase.

Man utd is lucky. Need not pay out the 7.2 mil because he did not achieve 25 cap for France in his contract clause.

Martial is the only player, I’ve heard of whose reputation grows the longer he is out injured. When he’s fit and playing regularly, he’s so disappointing.

It actually seems to be the opposite on here. He's no more 'disappointing' than many others were tonight or have been for the last month.

Would have been a better option than anything we had the bench tonight. Still one of the only players in the squad that can take a player on.

I didn’t it was possible to see a performance worse than Martial’s against Sheffield United. Enter Rashford...

I've heard this quote about a lot of Players during My time on the caf, so definitely not the only one

Besides, a lot of People want him gone, so i don't think his reputation is growing. Everyone knows he has been a big dissapointment this season.

Literally. Every bump since he's been injured is about how we don't miss him or that we need to get rid. No idea what that poster's been reading.

Did we missed his hold up play? It's sad none of Cavani, Mason and Marcus have the ability to hold the ball which needed some time to bring others into play.

So Cavani can’t hold the ball up? Interesting, prey tell us more about this?

Shame his abilities were pretty much anonymous virtually every single game he was fit this season.

Cavani's great for many reasons, his touch and hold up play isn't one of them, as far as I'm concerned. Martial's hold up play is comfortably the best in the squad, even this season, not sure why that's an issue for you?

At the end of the day it’s probably time for him to show his talents elsewhere, we can’t have passengers in our team who are hot and cold on 250k a week.

Which is a shame because at his best he is great.

In fairness, that 0.194 goals per game he’s gotten this season would have won it for us last night. It’s a game of fractions. And decimals.

So you’re basing your entire option on 1 game?
I prefer to judge a player over numerous games, not 3 good games followed by 16 crap ones. Martial our 3rd highest earning player gave a shite return for this wages. Cavani has proven to elevate the player around him and put the ball in the back of the net on a regular basis.
7 goals in 36 appearances is what he’ll be judged on, with numerous games where he looked very uninterested. He’s let down Ole who backed him with his preferred position and a big pay rise, he was awful for the majority of the part of the season where he was fit.

He isn't going anywhere unless he is willing to accept a pay cut which seems unlikely.
No club who might be interested would be willing to break their wage structure and pay cash for him
His reputation amongst non United fans seems to be less than stellar anyway.
So he is here for the next few years so we need to figure out how best to get the most out of him - as a striker or elsewhere -

Martial was missed last night, Ole would have definitely fancied taking him off the bench and his close control dribbling would have been useful against low block. Rather than selling anyone who loses a bit of form, we need a stronger squad next season. I'd like to see him play more games off the left again. Rashford should not be a guaranteed starter, let them play for one position.

Imagine actually playing a striker because he holds up the ball while he's shit in pretty much everything else.

No we didn't miss him. The striker position wasn't the problem yesterday. The goal Cavani scored, I bet Martial wouldn't have even been half arsed to try and get in this position to start with.

Yeah this is a fair summary.

Interestingly Brian Mcclair recently said Martial has all the talent but he doesn't think he actually likes football or enjoys playing.
