De Gea defensive actions outside his penalty area per 90.

17/18 - 0.35
18/19 - 0.26
19/20 - 0.29
20/21 - 0.35
21/22 - 0.24
22/23 (so far) - 0.50

Backs what the eye test suggests, he's been sweeping more so far this season.

Interesting how much closer to the edge of the box he's playing, including when we're in possession, not just at sweeping. He was also making slightly riskier passes (albeit still nothing to write home about compared to most elite keepers). I don't expect to see him doing many Cruyff turns on attackers this season, but if he can have enough confidence at least draw attackers on to him before playing it out long, that would be something.

Had no chance on the Iwobi shot. Was excellent otherwise, including a spectacular save at the end.

1:10 is a good example of how much those sweeping actions help the centre backs. That was a good ball from Gray to Maupay curling away from Martinez, and if De Gea was standing in his 6 yard box Maupay is likely 1 on 1 with the keeper with everyone blaming the back line. Instead De Gea calmly picks it up and we're building out from the back again.

His distribution is much much better now as well. He looks far more confident with passing and receiving the ball under pressure, and he's making mid range passes over the press when he has to instead of just hoofing it out in a panic every time. If he can keep building on this it would help a lot with next summer's transfer market, because we could potentially put off buying another keeper for a year or just go for a younger understudy to bed in for a season.

I'd love to see sustained improvement over the season but I don't think it'd be worth extending his contract when we're paying him £20M a year. We'd save £10m pa just on his salary alone by switching to someone else.

Played well enough, couple of good sweeping actions, distributed well enough although wasn't under huge amount of pressure when doing so.

Could of done with a more commanding presence at the end and didn't cover himself in glory for the goal, but solid enough performance.

Still far from convinced though.

Harsh. Prime Yashin maybe, just maybe, might have saved that shot, but no living keeper could have gotten any closer to the ball than Dave did. Sometimes you just gotta praise the goal scorer. This is one of those goals.

Dunno about that. 4 years ago already Kepa and Alisson both cost their clubs over £70 million in fees.

If De Gea can adequately sweep and distribute next season then having one fewer big transfer to pull off is also good, given the usual struggle to get business done.

How quickly people forget Brentford. Not to mention when we were under the kosh against Everton with all those corners, did he ever even attempt to catch or punch the ball away.

Yes he's improving a bit but he's massively overpaid and doesn't do many basic things a keeper should. ( claiming crosses, communication, good passing)

We need to stop this stupid nostalgia and be more ruthless. He hasn't been a top ten goalkeeper in the world for years now. Time to upgrade the position.

Not suggesting £10M would pay for an entire keeper, rather that paying double the going salary for a keeper is not good use of funds if we're tight after last summers splurge. That £10m would probably be a quarter of the next keeper's fee, which we'd be paying anyway the following season when De Geas extension ran out. So it'd be a false economy to stick with De Gea.

Plus, while his sweeping and distribution is better than before he's still ranked 14th in the league at sweeping and 13th at long range passing. So he's gone from really bad to merely below average. Plus his shot stopping has gone backwards significantly, he's neck and neck with Henderson even this season, whose been pretty bad himself. He may yet improve significantly over the season but as things stand he's a way off the level required.

Yeah, stats show he's pretty poor GK in this league. In the last few years I think he also started badly and then got better, but this is not a given so I am far from happy with De Gea in the goal. Kudos for him for getting the basics right (sweeping).

It's great to see him changing a bit towards a modern keeper, but his foundations are still lacking and will be forever so.

So I still have a feeling that Dubravka will be our nr 1 keeper soon.

As realistic as Jones being our first choice CB.

I agree with you, but I give him credit for a good game. If we criticise him when he's bad, he needs to be praised when he's good. Praise for one game doesn't mean I think he should stay. He should still be replaced. GK and ST should be the priorities in the summer.

As well you should. He played well against Everton. Put in performances like that till the end of the season then he will force us into a tough choice. Based on his body of work during the past five years, I'd say the decision should be clear though. Get those two transfers you mention right and we will be back competing with the best.

Putting that work in for the new contract. It's actually impressive how players in general manage to up their performances during this period.

It’s clear the player and coaching staff have been working on De Gea. Good to see some improvement.

I don’t think it’s fair to say people forget bad performances just because they have praised a good one and recognised improvement?

Its clear Ten Hag and his staff are helping to develop our players which I think is quite refreshing when you consider how stagnant we have been under Jose and Ole in this department.

Rio pushing for him to get new deal on BT tonight, only worth considering IF his distribution and command of area keeps steadily improving
And with a 50% wage decrease. Even with that he would be like the joined fourth best paid keeper in the world.

My comments are directed at those entertaining a new contract for him, on your second paragraph we agree.

It really depends on who we buy. Again, Liverpool and Chelsea paid over £70 million for their keepers Alisson and Kepa. We need to bring in a top quality CF and CM, which together will likely cost well over £120 million (that might not even be enough for a top striker alone), and we also need some depth for RB, if not a top quality player. Unless the board will sanction another summer transfer window with a net spend of more than £200 million, the money won't be there to acquire all of those players. If De Gea has improved to the point that he's not a major hindrance to the team's ability to play out from the back and have a high defensive line, it makes sense to just exercise his one year option and delay the purchase of a new keeper for 12 months.

I think suggesting that because Liverpool paid £70M for a keeper we must do too is a completely false premise. Unlike strikers, there a lot of keepers around. De Gea is performing at a low level relative to the league, despite modest improvements, so upgrading on him doesn't need us to buy at the very top end. Having a smaller budget would reduce the range of keepers we could look at but it certainly wouldn't stop us from buying someone better than De Gea.

It's great that he's doing a bit of sweeping, but he's still not claiming crosses and his passing out is still quite poor. Wouldn't be going overboard praising him for starting to do a basic part of his job he should have been doing for years.

He knows his time at the club is on the line. The club would be mad to offer him a new deal at all, never mind anything close to what he's being paid.

If he plays like he did against Everton every week, we won't need a keeper, His distribution is improving rapidly and coming off the line to sweep is something i don't think ive ever seen him do, still a bit tentative to come off his line for crosses but a step in the right direction.

of course he might not play like that every week.

To be fair De Gea has always looked comfortable receiving the ball - 'cos his touch with both feet is very good... it's more that then when he has the ball at his feet he gets a bit panicky/has crap distribution... but yeah like you say, his distribution is slowly improving.

Two games in a row where his starting position has been much higher up the pitch when we’re used to and he’s look composed on the ball, zipping passes along the ground instead of hoofing it. More of the same please.
Yeah, its obvious now really, he's far more up the pitch, and his passes look more composed.

De Gea's change alone should be enough to shut up the crowd claiming Ten Hag is just playing Ole ball.

I'm sure I was as surprised as many to see him come so far out, in the situation where Martinez gave the guy a little nudge.

He's reduced the hoofball a lot these past few games.

Maybe. He certainly wasn’t doing it for the past few seasons though. Hence my question?
Quite frankly, he probably wasn't asked to do it.

The thing to remember with this is, that like all sweeper keepers if he does it enough he's eventually going to make a mistake that's going to make him look like a complete tit. So unless he's got the full backing of his coach, i can see why players are reluctant to play so aggressively on their own accord.

You think it was coached out of him by Mourinho?
Just not actively encouraged. When he came from Atletico he was also a lovely passer - used to ping it out to our wings with some accuracy. Again that was gone within a year.

Well there you go. He really wasn’t much better under Van Gaal.

Obviously way too early to conclude that ETH can fix what has always been broken. Still, though, I’m liking what I’ve seen in the last two games. The really stand out difference to me has been how much more willing he is to keep the ball on the deck. Makes such a difference to our ability to play the ball out from the back. Lofted passes are slower and harder to control. So even if they’re accurate (and his often aren’t) the receiver is fighting an uphill battle as soon as they touch the ball.
