Completely lashed at that chance. That was a poor effort really. Aside from that was probably our most functional attacker.

I’d say without even being amazing so far (ignoring his 3 goals) he has probably shown more in his short time than Sancho. He just has more umph
I am a huge fan of Sancho but thats spot on. Even if Antony hasn't threatened with his general play, at least he is getting into goalscoring positions, and been keeping the ball extremely well and getting us out of the press. I am very surprised by sancho

He needs to massively work on his right foot. He's got the skill, but having only one functioning foot will make him predictable. I don't understand how at this level there are still one footed players, I'm not asking for a full Dembélé but at least do the basics.

Lefty footballers are generally heavily one-footed. Maradona's right foot was used only to stand and run.

If he had a functioning right foot, we would have won the game. Still, kept possession extremely well and defensive contribution is top notch as usual, which helped us sustain our pressure in the first half.

Delivery a bit iffy as well, need to be more precise rather than just putting the ball into the box.

He showed at Ajax that he's capable of crossing and beating a man down outside, still believe it will come here in time

It's nebulous, what I consider a sitter you might not. If you don't consider it a sitter fair enough, doesn't mean you're right.

The main point is still he should have scored.
Tbh when I quoted I had other posts in mind, yeah he should have done a lot better, I would agree with that. It doesn't make sense to me for a pro footballer to not be able to shoot with your weaker foot.

It was a good chance, not a complete sitter. Even just trying to quantify it... It had an xG of about 0.2. Good chance, not great. 1 in 5 sort of chance.

If a right player misses that chance with the left foot, no one would be going on and on about it, it's getting boring already.

I’m pretty certain Anthony will be mulling over the chance to bury it for the next couple of days, and will work on taking shots with his weaker foot.

Those Nani comparisons were wide of the mark, weren’t they? In as much as Antony is unbelievably reliable in possession. I’d never really watched him play, so assumed we’d be getting a mercurial, risk-taking kind of winger. Inconsistent, perhaps. He’s the exact opposite in practice, and it really suits the team.

I really like him and fully expect him to improve the more he settles.

In some ways. But he does suffer, medically speaking, from extreme bad head.

Does xG take the weaker foot factor into account? Because surely that's more than a 0.2 chance on your stronger foot.

I swear, it's only left footed players that get stick for having a poor weaker foot.

This seems about right. I rarely see Sancho or Rashford do anything useful with their left foot. Even Martial.

That’s a good point and seemingly true now that I think about it.

Thought Antony should have worked the keeper at least, but still look at the bigger picture. He’s improving every game and starting to look so assured. We needed an ego player and this chap will now be skinning defenders for fun week in well out.

I dont understand all this “weak foot issue”

Robben, Di Maria, Giggs, Salah and Mahrez. All left foot dominate and its not spoken about.

Look at the career Robben had by essentially doing what Anthony is doing now and it never was an issue.

His goals to games isn’t bad for us. Weird comment after missing one chance
The games against the big teams tend to be tight. It's unusual that a Man Utd Vs Chelsea game will see us have several 1v1 situations. So when those come along they have to be taken. Antony had to score that chance, knowing he may not get another.

Antony's doing well but, like he did against Arsenal (and Everton) he had to open the game for us. I don't apologise for thinking starting attackers for Man Utd should be at that level.

You said. The top sides can count on production from their wide forwards, ours…. Meanwhile Antony goals to games is prob one of the best in the league.

His production has been fine. Players miss chances.Name me a top wide forward who has not missed a chance like that in a big game?

I did not express myself well.

My point is he had to score cos in big games you don't tend to get tons of those chances. He didn't.

yes, and it’s way harder for them to dominate both feet. It’s more normal for right footed to improve their left foot.
But I think left footers have a unique dominance of their good feed, superior to most right footed players. Robben, Messi, Maradona and Di Maria are the first names that come to my mind.

I really like him. We just need similar quality at LW and CF.
Couldn't agree more.

Watch when gets stronger & more powerful through his legs when he is 24,25 & 26 yrs of age. He will start bouncing off people & beat his man for pace.

There's several things to adress here.

First of all, using your weak foot isn't only about shooting or passing, it's also about driving the ball on this weak side, which is something that Antony litteraly never does when he approaches the goal. If he gets the ball on the wing, he'll run towards the center of the pitch almost 100% of the time. Salah or Di Maria found ways to mix up their game, even if it's only 10% of the times. That makes Antony VERY predictable and it won't take long for defenders to adjust if he doesn't evolve.

On top of that, Salah has a weak right foot but still way better than Antony's (at the moment). Di Maria developped a very good outside of the foot pass/shoot on top of being more creative (and sloppier) and Robben was in a whole different category when it comes to raw speed and power. They all found a different "something" to compensate.

Antony obviously has many ways to improve but it's as much a technical issue as it is a mental one, he needs to accept being slightly unconfortable when he drives the ball to the right, otherwise he'll never be able to be a consistant high level threat in the last third.

It does not. It takes into account goalkeeper position I believe, defender position, your position and the type of shot (shot in stride for example), etc.

Big chances like that aren't scored as frequently as you would think, basically.

Our best forward player this season both on and off the ball. His game isn't perfect but considering he's 22 coming from the Dutch league and thrown in at the deep end and holding his own is impressive.

He will keep improving and showing new layers to his game over time. Very impressed with him.

Most xG models take into account the weak/strong foot factor. Opta's model uses 35 factors or so when calculating.

That may be, but still that's no excuse. Maradona played 25-30 years ago, football has evolved and players are required to be more complete.

Being only one footed means he always cut inside to either cross or shot, that makes him predictable and easier to defend.

Stopped reading there. Really you didn't see the goals he scored this year already? Yeah pretty predictable but very difficult to defend. Not sure why people are running this Bullshit. Plenty one-footed world class players we witnessed the past seasons.

Wow, very impressive analysis based on 2 goals (I don't count the Everton one since it's pretty different).

It may seem insane to you but opponents adjust once they get to know a player. For a player like Antony, they'll leave his weak side more open since he never goes there and will defend the center far more, keepers will also move a step or 2 on the right when they see he has the ball in this position. Then it's up to him to mix his game up to show he has other options in this position.

I'm not saying Antony can't evolve obviously, but the "there's other one footed players that made it to the highest level!" argument is a serious confirmation bias and said players had more options in their toolboxes. There's also plenty of one footed players that failed. The Robben comparison for exemple is ludicrous, Antony will never be Robben, he doesn't have the combination of pace with raw power that made Robben almost unstoppable. He'll have to find something else. Maybe he will, maybe he will note, I have no idea but the sure thing is, it'll make the difference between a good player and a great one.
