Without a doubt. There’s no price you can put on a striker who can take a ball under pressure and effectively progress the play. Even taking a high ball on his chest, Martial is an absolute unit when it comes to holding it up. Some will say it’s hyperbole, but I honestly don’t see that many strikers in world football who are able to do it as well as him.

We’ve seen Ronaldo’s hold up play varies from average to shocking. Rashford is only slightly better but can struggle at times.

The fact that Martial actually has good pace and close control dribbling too just makes a lethal combination when he’s on it. This is why I don’t worry about his consistency on goal return as he brings so much more to the team. It’s not a coincidence our other players like Bruno and Rashford play much better when he’s in the team. Even Sancho who has struggled this season looked excellent in combination with Martial and Rashford in pre-season. Them 3 looked electric.

I’m cautiously excited about Martial when we return to action. I just pray he can avoid injuries now because he alone can define what kind of season we have for the remaining months.
Agree. Martial is great but we desperately need a similar player who can rotate with him.

Pretty much this which makes his injury record so frustrating. Could be such a vital player for us under EtH

I don't think he's a false 9. There are different way to play the position. His hold up play is as good as anyone out there imo.
It's very similar to a false 9 in that he drops deep and wants to turn and run at the defense, which is different from sitting with his back on a CB having balls pinged into him to hold up. He can do both very well though, which is partly why our attack is always miles better with him in the side even if he isn't finishing well.

False nine often have great hold up play, the difference between a false nine and a traditional nine is about the space that they focus on not whether they have a hold up play or not. Firmino and Benzema arguably have or had the best hold up play among all attackers and there is no doubt that their primarily has generally been as a false nine for Real Madrid and Liverpool.
I see Benzema as just a 9. I always expect 9's to hold the ball up and come deep. False 9's to me are people who are more attacking midfield but sometimes occupy the forward positions but mostly in midfield

Benzema in the system that involved Ronaldo was a false nine and coming deep isn't part of a traditional 9 role. It's easier to think about it in the system where it was generally used, it's a flat 442 with one of the striker linking up while the other remains high and around the box.

Martial in the mood is as good as anyone. The only fault I have with him is that he doesn't do the tap ins. You don't normally see him busting to get to the end of a cross. But if it's cut back then he is there to score.

The last to arrive in the box is generally the first person available to shoot.

Jesus you're a bit touchy.
Didn’t mean for it to come off touchy or harsh, was more just expressing in general that even though he’s gotten tons of shit over his time here (which has been deserved at times), the general skill set he brings as a striker is very difficult to find elsewhere. Which is also why ETH is so fond of him even with his propensity to be injured constantly

Surely fit for the Christmas period? No injury worries? We're very dependant on him now.

that's the thing, you can never be sure if he's in the mood. Sancho, Pogba can also be great when in the mood, but we never saw it enough from Pogba and we haven't seen it enough from Sancho. I think stronder mentality players are something ETH is addressing. You look at the players he has brought in, you don't have to worry if they are in the mood. Even Antony who let's be honest is still adapting, but even during this phase, his workrate is still there.

68M on wages for Le Sulk 2. No wonder we are skint.
I hope he is gone in summer.
I mean we're also spending £325k a week on a goalkeeper who can't even make their NT squad, £350k a week on some youngster who hasn't delivered and also can't make their NT squad, and god knows how much we spent in wages on Phil Jones to act as a science experiment for our physios. Thats not even going into the half a million a week we've wasted on PR7. Then of course there's the fact we're run by a bunch of parasites who've riddled the club with debt, haven't invested into infrastructure as well as paying for poor financial decisions made by their lackey for 10 years. So its a bit weird to single out Martial's wages.

Just seen this on United's instagram

It's good that he's smiling and all, but the man can't even put on his gloves properly and we expect him to be our only main striker for the rest of the season? We really need to buy in January.

He has the best hold up play and he has great techniques to score goals. Plus, he doesn't fall everytime he tries to shoot like a Jellybeck. Martial will do well without Ronaldo.

I don't think anyone doubts that, the issue with Martial is he stops playing when we sign another CF and that's if he's fit.

Am starting to have small anxiety attacks when someone hacks him from behind or just seeing him in full sprint as I think he will end up injured somehow. Really like him upfront and hopefully he can stay injury free.

But I have my doubts, especially with us pressing from the front. It would not be smart, but pretty much necessary to bring another option in January.

He was fine, but beyond that shuffle in the box that brought a save I can't remember much he did. I really hope we replace him as a priority.
We need another striker for sure but if you mean bin him altogether then then you might be in for a surprise. Martial still has plenty to offer this club.

Happy to have him as an option off the bench or as rotation against weaker sides. I just don't think he should be our starting #9.

I'd personally like to see a quality striker come in and play whoever performs.
