No, when a driver is on the same strategy as his team mate but somehow is over 20 seconds slower in the race, that's when they have no chance of a WDC.Mate you live in a parellel world. When a driver is told "no fighting" when in 1st position he definitely has no chance of a WDC.

You make it sound like Russell is newbie who has no idea how F1 car work and that Hamilton is ready to sacrifice half of his season to make better car for himself and Russell, which is extremely stupid from Hamilton's POV even if it's true. No one is making him do that.

One of the interesting comments from Hamilton beyond not expecting anything until next year was that they'll "raise the car for the race as expected". Sounds like they run practice to try things, and then race with a higher setup to reduce the proposing which might explain the slightly better race results.
