Were there really less people around doing things like this? There have always been horrific kidnappings and murders, do we have any evidence that it became more prevalent in the 2000's? I'd have guessed the opposite personally.
It's quite difficult to compare between years as laws change and counting methods change, but in short yes. Some crime has reduced, some has gone up, in particular violent and sexual crimes which are probably most relevant to this.

According to police records violent crime has risen from ~100k incidents in 1980 to over 1m incidents in each of the last few years. Rape and sexual assault is even more difficult to quantify as there was a major law change in 2003 amongst other things, but those rates have risen from a couple of thousand cases in the 80s to around 14k in 2007, and almost 60k now.

Rape and sexual assault crimes are hugely more reported by victims now than they ever used to be though. It’s very difficult because I hate having to rely on supposition or anecdote rather than hard data, but there is huge amounts of supportive evidence for that supposition. Women who lived through the 50’s-80’s period routinely describe suffering unwanted physical sexual incidents that would today be considered serious sexual assault but at the time were not taken seriously and as such were not reported as crimes. Even with rape, victims were treated appallingly both in society and by the justice system until fairly recently, so its not really a surprise that a lot of women didn't report these attacks.

Of course, it's hard to tell how much of a factor that all is, but a 30x increase is an awful lot to explain away with just that. Violent crimes on the other hand are almost always reported now as they were back then, particularly when broken down further.

To be honest a x30 increase really wouldn't shock me in the slightest. Women really did have to put up with a staggering amount of sexual abuse in the past. Men groping women really was just considered a 'tut tut' thing for a very long time.

(About 1986) When I was about 12 I was walking home from school. I’d got out early because i had to go for an eye test, but first had a half hour walk home on my own.
On this straight stretch of main road (for anyone that knows Derry, the stretch of road going from drumahoe towards altnagelvin hospital). A white van stopped and the driver asked for directions to the hospital. It was literally a straight drive 5 mins up the road for him. I told him then he asked if I wanted a lift. 3 times he must have asked every time i said no and tried to walk on he’d follow me then shout “are you sure?”.
Thankfully I had sense.

Its pretty evident what I was discussing I think. It was neglect, but that is far removed from having an active role in the kidnapping of their child. So often the focus is on the parents and what they did wrong, and I dare say I'm as guilty as any of that, but it truly is horrible to think what happened to that innocent, sweet girl. I don't think anyone can look at it logically and believe Madeline is alive. I too am a parent. Speculating on what happened in those last, horrific moments of her life would haunt me forever.

Yeah totally agree and if they are innocent of her being harmed then what they have had to put up with from the Portuguese police and the media is disgraceful

"We".

I grew up the same. As long as I was home for tea my parents never knew where I was, but they knew i was with friends, and often in built up areas. Sometimes they might leave me in the car whilst they went somewhere, but it was always with other kids around or in busy areas. They would never leave me alone, away from anybody else, in the dark, for such a long time. And that was in the 80s when there weren't so many people around doing things like this. To do what they did in 2007 is absolutely neglect and more than just a simple mistake.
Kidnaps, child murderers, molesters and accidents happened in all decades without exception and quantities. Its just reported more and more broadly due the news exposure

Madeleine McCann suspect charged with sexual offences by German prosecutors

Officials say new charges relate to offences allegedly committed in Portugal between 28 December 2000 and 11 June 2017

German prosecutors said on Tuesday they had charged a 45-year-old German man, who is a suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, with several sexual offences he allegedly committed in Portugal between 28 December 2000 and 11 June 2017.

“The accused is the same person against whom charges were brought in connection with the disappearance of the then 3-year-old British girl Madeleine Beth McCann,” the Braunschweig prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

“Specifically, the accused is charged with three offences of aggravated rape and two offences of sexual abuse of children,” the prosecutor’s office added.

The office did not say the charges related to the McCann case.

A very strong candidate but without a body or other evidence it will be hard to prosecute him.

Anyone seen that girl on Instagram who thinks she is Maddie and is asking to speak to the McCans to get a DNA done. She has that eye condition but other than that she doesn’t look like her (to me)

I'm sure this has been asked to death.. (so apologies in advance)

But why was/is the Madeline McCann case in particular so publicised compared to the thousands of other missing children?

Because she came from a middle class background and was white.

This but also I guess the circumstances were perfect for a media storm. Parents on holiday, accused of not checking on her properly, the fact that she basically just vanished.

Reminds me of the "White girl in trouble" scene from Scary movie

Come to think of it, that's actually a rather smart and edgy joke for such a shite movie.

The facts its on social media would make me skip it without a 2nd thought, its just easy content/attention. Anything legit of that nature would go through proper channels.

Yep and the tapas seven had a good ring to it, not to mention the parents originally being suspects and the bungled investigation etc...It was probably one of the early trial by social media cases with Kate getting grief for what she wore or if she had make-up on or smiled etc...

Yeah, the being rich and white got them attention for good and bad reasons. Definitely felt like some score settling going on with the way the attractive, wealthy, doctor mum had her character assassinated.

portuguese police will be glad to finally be able to close the book on the case once and for all.
:lol::lol::lol:
All jokes aside though, I did see somewhere on TikTok or somewhere a screenshot where she said she had previously been sectioned before as a child
