Unlike many other players it's first season in the Premier League. A wrecking ball like Bailly might be expected to find he is immediately well suited to the rough and tumble of PL football but Mkhitaryan wouldn't be the first footballer from the continent who needs to be more gradually bedded in.
His hand has also been forced on Bailly due to injuries. I wouldn't be massively surprised to see him drop out for a bit when Smalling comes back, but, then again, he's played well so might keep his place.

Willian made his league debut for Chelsea in October. Oscar played his first game in late September. Mourinho does seem to prefer bedding new signings in slowly, even the good ones. I'm sure there's exceptions to this but he's got the luxury of having loads of options right now, so can err on the side of caution.

That's a good point actually, but in general if he wasn't the player who was intentionally bought by Mourinho then I would definitely be worried, considering that you don't expect from a player who is already 27, had a full pre season, and who costed lot of money despite being in his last year to neccesarily need a lot of time to adjust to the league and to hardly get any minutes in your first two games of the season. But that makes it bit easier tbf.

Two competitive games, one of them barely relevant? Maybe he's just not match-sharp yet. Or José's been preoccupied trying to prove to us all that he doesn't hate Mata.
Pre season minutes strangely became limited I think, at least at the point where it started becoming about 'starting to pick the team for Bournemouth'. Of course, I'm working on the assumption that he was bought for the first team, but he barely featured against Everton and Leicester.

As soon as Jose is convinced Rooney is shit, Micki will slot right in.

That still implies that he didn't originally have a plan for him as a starter when he bought him.

It's all, of course, still very early days - and things could change, but our other two signings, and I'm sure Pogba will follow the same way, have all clearly been integrated in a manner at suggests they were meant to be in the first team.

Mkhitaryan basically started some games before we had anyone else available, and since then, he's been on the bench. The only reason I'm a bit worried too, and of course I'm not a better manager than Mourinho, but all reports have been about how Mkhi needs to be given confidence to produce his best, and I'm not sure if he could do with the feeling of thinking he's not fully trusted.

I think mourinho has said pretty clearly that the 4 players he bought were players to start and improve the team. I think mkhitaryan will be fine and will be brought in when ready.

I think Mkhityaran is maybe struggling for fitness, we didn't get much of a pre season and he might not be used to that. Jose is probably just being cautious in easing him into the team. He will have to do a lot of tracking back which he might not be used to yet either. Early days guys.

One other thing to consider is that he could be using this time to take a final look at Mata and Lingard before the window shuts.

Didn't we have the same problem with Kagawa whose fitness wasn't great coming here from Germany? I am pretty sure I heard the same about one or two other players coming to top teams from Germany, possibly Schürle and someone else.

I'm pretty sure Kagawa put up one of the club's best ever scores on the bleep test when he first came here, which is no easy feat considering we had Becks and Park playing for us.

The whole quote makes it sound like he prefers Mkhitaryan down the middle.
We might not see much of him until Mourinho decides if Rooney stays in the team.

Those were just rumours, he hardly lasted any game more than 60 minutes for first few months.

Just drop Rooney and get it over with already

------------ Zlatan (Rashford)
Martial (Depay) Pogba (Mata) Mkhi (Lingard)

Pace, strength and flair all in abundance

This is what I hope we end up playing. If not now, at least in a few weeks.

Largely irrelevant anyway. I could smash the bleep test but be miles away from 90 minutes football-fit. It's an indicator of fitness, not an absolute measurement.

I think it's mainly a formation/stylistic issue. At Dortmund he had great acceleration and because of the game they played, he was able to be involved with lots of short high intensity running (for dribbling, making space, pressing etc). I.e It was all about closing and making space in those 10-15 yards.

In the Premier League, it's literally up and down the field so his game/type of athleticism wasn't able to keep up.

Mkhi at no.10 will make us look more like a proper unit as he can link up play and provide assists to our forwards. If Rooney's only purpose in the team is to score goals let him fight it out with Zlatan for a spot in the team.

Asked in his Thursday press conference to reveal his thinking behind the decision, Mourinho provided an honest and detailed answer, reiterating that Mkhitaryan would be an important player for United this term.

"Options," the boss said. "I was reading the game against Leicester and I felt that we needed the speed of Jesse Lingard and, in the game against Bournemouth, that [Juan] Mata would help guard against their pressing really high. He could reach some spaces behind the line of the pressure and could be very useful for us.

"I decided to play [Wayne] Rooney in both games, close to Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], and I didn't start with Micki. When some managers buy players, they feel they have to protect their choices by playing the player all the time – I am not like this. Before me, comes the team and what I think is best for the team.

"I felt that Lingard and Mata were better options for the team in these matches, with the reality of the Premier League, so I made that decision.

"I keep saying the same thing, though, that Mkhitaryan is a super football player and will give us a lot during the season."

Does that imply that Mkhi may end up taking Rooney's starting spot sooner or later?

Well. If Pogba and Mata impresses in training, while Targaryan doesn't then he won't get picked.

He will feature a lot instead of Rooney though after Mourinho has given him the 5-10 or so chances to stink up the place a name as his requires to be dropped without a fuss.

Also he is a slot-in for a 60-70 min change.

Mata & Lingard have scored in the last games they've played, how can he justify a starting role?

What the hell is going on here? Why is Mkhi not starting? He can't possibly be worse than fecking Rooney is and not to mention Rooney is occupying Mkhi natural position.

Ffs, did Van Gaal skin Mourinho so he could wear his skin? This is absolutely mind-boggling.

because hes a much better player and he showed that last season.
But the players who play in his position have had more of an impact in games which matter for United, this season.
Even Rooney scored last match.

He'll get his chance and he has to take it, but for now he can't assume a starting position based off his previous season's exploits.

So why spend 30m on him if we're going to play the same sack of shit in the same place?
