He was an absolute passenger in this game. He was given a free role in this game and offered no creativity, no defensive solidity, nothing at all. Almost all of our chances fell to Rooney and he completely bottles all of them. These weren't half chances or pot shots at goal; they were prime goalscoring chances that the Rooney of old would score or assist 9/10 times.

We created enough chances this game to get at least a draw; if Rooney scored from that wayward pass to Cech in the first half we would have had a massive chance of winning this game.

The thing is Rooney hasn't suddenly declined this year, it has been happening over the past 4-5 years. The last time he got 20 goals in a season was 6 years ago. He simply hasn't looked after himself, there has always been reports and pictures of him out boozing and smoking, it is nothing to do with him playing from a young age.

It's funny, I thought he'd transition into a really good central midfielder in his twilight years once his physical attributes started to dwindle.

Rooney is one of my favourite ever United players. He's been a fantastic servant and I hate to see the abuse he gets on here, but it is time for him to go.
Why?

His passing has always been overrated. It's been shocking for five years now. All it consists of is a loopy ball to Valencia. He has no variety in his passing to be a CM.

Well there's one simple thing to think about and that's genetics. It's like some people smoke, drink and do basically every 'bad' thing and they live to be 100 and others can take care of their bodies, avoiding everything that's not good for the body and they can die pretty early. Sometimes it's just about luck.

I really don't know.
That's very possible.

Rooney was one of my favourite players and despite hammering him I'm very sad to watch end in such a way, that reached the point of me being afraid of him playing.

He better leaves this summer not just for team's sake but also to save any good picture he has in fans' mind. Any more years of this performance and no one will be able to withstand him any longer. He got a good career here up till last season.

I just can't find any probable excuse for a player dropping at such age to this form. 31 years old he should be at least giving 2 or 3 years not this. Giggs at 35 years was winning PFA player of the year and Scholes was a part of title winning team the year before his retirement. Both started very early and played at tough positions in the field.

There's really no excuse for Rooney for his decline as this.
It's simple - he didn't take care of his body. You can't drink, smoke and eat shit as a professional athlete no matter how talented you are.

I smoke, and I can sometimes get out of breath climbing very steep stairs:D Can you imagine if I were a professional athlete with that kind of nasty habit?
Exactly - it doesn't work.

You can't be serious.
Context: Someone mentioned how Rooney can be blamed for us dropping 5 points. I replied saying the same could be said for Herrera, who could have stayed on the line last week.

All on Mourinho giving him a free role. He's got at least 2 better players on the pitch for that, yet he still stupidly chose Rooney.

Not even sure he could last more than a year or two in America or China at this rate, hopefully a deal's already in place for him to leave quickly in the summer.

Glad he stayed on for the full 90 minutes, totally passed it at the top level.

I'd have kept Rashford on the bench and just let this match be a fitness test for Jones/Smalling plus experience for the younger lads...with Carrick and Wazza playing to demonstrate why they aren't in the starting eleven any more.

From what I've expected of him for a few years now I was pleasantly surprised. I've seen him play so much worse.

Agreed. I do think he'll leave, but I have no idea where he'll go.

Looked like he was being tortured by being made to play. Mourinho should show some mercy and send him on a vacation or something. Looks finished. Soccer is clearly not the game for him at this stage. Maybe golf.

Why are you talking about Mourinho in a player performance thread??? The manager fielded a weakened side and wanted to nick a goal which backfired. But, this doesnt change the fact that Rooney was shambolic this game. Rooney this season has had bad performances but always contributed (he has 10 assists this season which is the 2nd highest in the team!).

Rooney has been declining for a long time, but i never would have thought that he would get even worse than what he was like at the beginning of the season. It's sad really.

I think deep down even he knows he is finished at this level, couple of moments in the match he tried to make the tackle on stretch. Failed to make contact with the player both times.

It's just sad to watch him right now, body is unable to do what his brain is trying. Needs to leave in the summer pronto and this is coming from someone who has always thought he has a role to play till he wants here at OT.

Come on China, throw in a £60m bid. He's marketable! All the kids theses days want to be Rooney when they grow up! Honest!

It's a sad position to see Wayne in when you only get a game time when Fellaini is suspended. And when he does you might wish if Fellaini was't suspended and I despise see afro-man in the lineup. So it's like a lose, lose situation for me.

And i would like to take this opportunity to apologize for questioning Sir Alex when he judge Wayne as a passed footballer. I actually thought it was a personal feud which clouded his thinking. But my bad he was done years ago.

I actually won't be surprised if we cut ties with him sooner rather than later. We won't get any money for him and he must realise that every game he plays is spoiling his chances of anyone half decent signing him or paying any sort of decent money for him.

I can see a situation arising where we just pay him off and ask him to leave quietly.

He looked even more lost than usual without Valencia on the right. His one pass (which sounds pathetic) wasn't available.

SAF saw it coming a mile off. I wish he gave us another season, if only to have sold Rooney at the time! ... Not give him a 5 year contract... Thanks Moyes

I honestly think the last game of the season vs Palace will be his last for the club. Jose will give him a chance to go out there and say one final goodbye to the fans... I hope

He must know that he's finished. It's not even sad to see because he's gradually been getting worse for years. He and United need to everyone a favour and just get the the feck rid, to anyone anywhere.

He's clearly finished as a 'top' player - time will tell whether a can/will drop a level or below to extend his career but he doesn't seem capable of coming to this realisation by himself...the thought has crossed my mind (tin foil hat alert), that Mourinho has learned from the Cassilas situation and is throwing him out there to hang him out to dry, knowing that he'll lose media support every time he plays. Given how poor has become and bar a few people, most would now not question Mourinho over the playing time he gets, contrasting hugely from earlier in the season.

He's gone from England captain, guaranteed starter every game to bit-part last solution club player in something like 6 months...his drop has been monumentous and he really needs to admit to himself that he can't play at this level anymore because it's painful to watch now.

Started playing as a 16 year old in PL, having no longer rest from football so it's more understandable he's done than many others would at 31.
That and his lifestyle have finished him too early. Messi and Ronaldo can still offer world class contributions and they were playing at an early age. A lot of his demise is down to his body type and him not living his life to compensate for it.

Jose had got to play someone else, anyone else, in the team besides Wayne. He was a complete passenger today - even Ramsey gave him the run around. Put anyone from the youth team in ahead of him - McTominay, Gomes, Buffonge. Anyone.

Mourinho has subbed people at half time for offering more than Rooney has today, yet he remains on the pitch.
As much as it pains me to say it... Today wasnt about getting a win. It was about getting through the game where we rest as many players as possible for Thursday.

At the end of the day if we were going for a win i'm sure Pogba, Rashford and Lingard would have come on earlier for Mata/Mik, Rooney and Carrick.
