I am a bit slow here, but are you serious with the Benteke mention? Anyways, this board shite themselves when they had Benteke & we had to make do with Fellaini up front for a match or 2 before Martial happened
serious, IIRC I wanted us to keep Chicharito or sign up someone short term like Llorente at the time. Lukaku is a better player than Benteke was at that point, but they both suffer from indifferent workrate, inconsistent touch, and poor hold up play. I hope it works out better for us than it did for Liverpool. :nervous:

I've seen this goal thrown up proudly before like it's some example of great technique, he looks like he's stumbling over at least twice and lollops into the box and finishes well, it doesn't disprove anything, he's clumsy and cumbersome.
They all count...Rashford can't even keep the ball, Martial is not scoring, Ibra is done until January, RM wanted to play tummy sticks instead of dealing Morata......so Luk may look clumsy, but he scores.

We should have had 3 signings sealed before the tour to give us a good shot at the title next season. Woody has had a poor window.
Nonsense, players can come in anytime before the end of August and title chances remain the same. What matters is if the player fit the group.

Chelsea signed Kante mid July and Luiz August 31st then went on to win the league. United on the other hand completed 3 signings before pre-season and we finished outside the top 4.

Hmm, has it really been confirm Lukaku's joining?

Sounds good so far, in theory should easily fit into Mourinho's tactics, plus no need to adapt to EPL.

;) I'm very sure Pogba have a big role here influencing Lukaku, they're close friends.

I'm comparison to other teams we aren't doing too bad for transfers at the minute. Take at look at Chelsea and the progress made after multiple bids for a few players, Manchester City as well, although they have signed Bernardo silva, not much else has happened with them. Barca and real Madrid haven't made much movement either and from what the media report they only have one main target each, verrati for barca and mbappe for Madrid.

If the media is to be believed then he has been working the lukaku deal for weeks and that's after he looked nailed on for Chelsea.

Scores bags of goals for Everton and WBA but wont with much better players? Sound logic.
Does nothing at international level, hasn't shown outstanding class across opponents in the league, has zero champions league pedigree. Sound logic indeed.

Players like this come in as supplementary to bona fide world class. If they don't make the step up then, it's not the end of the world.

If he's our lead-the-line-forward, he will have to make an enormous leap in performance and mental strength. Can he do that? Perhaps. But it's a £75m bet and that's unsettling.

We have been in a rebuild for a few years now and our team was no where near complete before Jose took over. Even after one transfer window with Jose we where still behind Chelsea, City, Spurs and Arsenal. We are the ones catching up we needed to get the players in early to bed them in rather than later it takes time to settle into a new city you don't just move and you are good to go. Woody has had the list since march there is no excuse to only have 1 players singed before the tour. It will take a couple of months for the players to adapt to life in Manchester and gel with the team we don't have that luxury which is why we should have signed 3 of our targets before the tour.

I have to admit, I'm very surprised that the Lukaku deal appears to be happening. Like most, I was convinced that he was off to Chelsea, with Morata coming to United. When the Lukaku stories started to surface, I still wasn't buying in. If Lukaku truly was United's first choice striker this summer, then they've played an absolute blinder, it must be said. It would be very interesting to know the full, true story of how all of this played out.

At the end of the day, I suppose it doesn't really matter how we got here. Lukaku may have some limitations, but he clearly has many more strengths. He's an excellent replacement for Zlatan. He's a physical beast, he's good in the air, he's good with both feet, he's quick and, most importantly, he knows how to put the ball in the net. He's at a great age, seems extremely motivated to improve (in fact, to be the best striker in the league), is good friends with our world record signing, qualifies as home grown, and has consistently been trending in the right direction. His goal scoring record speaks for itself, which should be music to our ears. I would have loved to have seen Morata come in, but have absolutely no complaints about Lukaku. I very much look forward to watching him play in a United shirt next season.

He's strong, somewhat two footed, has a decent presence in the air, and is all about goals. On the downside he looks markable by any decent grade of center back, doesn't seem to adjust his centre of gravity fluidly, and is not blessed with much skill. Have to be hopeful but he will surely need to raise his game. Concerned how a 24 year old could still be in development though.

Why the feck do you care about technique when you get the goal. You think this is Fifa Street or some shit?

He's actually scored 20 goals for Belgium, and was fourth and second top scorer in the league in the last two seasons.

THIS. I don't understand why technique is so big concern when guy score 25 goals per season in a age 23. I don't care even if he have wooden prosthetic leg if he scores 25 goals. It simply doesn't matter in that scenario.

What are you talking about? The guy's the second highest scorer in the league. Has been banging them in consistently for 3 years at least and is proven for Belgium. But he does not have the mental strength?!

On the other hand, you would cream yourself over Kane who has done similar to Lukaku. I don't get it.

You keep spewing more bollocks and ignoring facts. Chelsea came 10th the season prior, brought KEY players in mid July and last day of transfer window and won the league.

When the players arrived is absolutely irrelevant. Those things only matters in anti-Woody echo room.

That's just ridiculous.

If he does make the jump he will be an Aguero/Lewondowski level striker which would be an amazing player to have at 75 million at his age.

Say he doesn't make this jump you're talking about, we still have a proven premier league scorer who will be better than any other striker we have right now.

The only legit concerns you could have about Lukaku is his build up play and first touch. He is also not as clinical as some of the top tier strikers but saying he's bad for us because he is "ugly" to watch makes no sense.

Any butthurt Chelsea fans over this need to be reminded of how they signed Robben and Mikel. They're well overdue us screwing them over in the transfer market
They'll all pretend now that he's a shit donkey and they never wanted him to begin with.

He has a lot of goals in the league, too. Doing something at international level is looking like a star when it's time to step up.

He's young, so obviously it would be unfair to dismiss him in that regard, but he doesn't ooze the kindof class where one think he's a sure thing to enter the elite tier of striker. More power to him if he does.

He is not proven for Belgium, see above. The pl goals are not the barometer for excellence. It means he's a good premier league striker. Great. Can he go up the levels required or are you saying the product that he is is satisfactory for the outlay?

Mental strength is being the man when the pressure is truly on. Lukaku hasn't shown that.

And you might want to see my posts about Kane before leaping to conclusions.

Middle paragraph is great. Exactly what would make him a great signing. Problem is, he doesn't have their technical brilliance where you look at him and think it's only a matter of time.

Last paragraph ties into what I said above; 75m for a good pl striker, ok. Might be the going rate in these crazy times. Why not too that cash with some more and go after the elite talent?

Like who? The market is pretty dry for elite strikers at the moment.

Combination football is standard practice for the elite strikers and it enables everyone around them. That he is well short of the standard there is a major concern as it won't just affect him but the whole attack, which is not the direction I hoped we'd go in. Mourinho's donkeys have never actually been donkeys - just big men who could rough it with the best of them, so it makes me pensive unless we're getting another striker in, too.

Eden Hazard plays in the same team and does nothing at international level as well.

Hang on....

Yes, but you make waves and up your price to the player (wages) until he's thinking about it or demanding a wage increase. If that fails, fair enough.

Unscrupulous, yes. But necessary with how far back we are.

And?

Hazard has a lot to prove himself in the cl and internationally. But he has the talent where it won't be a surprise if he makes the leap in a breakout season.

They are just run of the mill goals, and I never said I hated goals, I said I hate how he plays football.
Goals don't count unless the striker beats 3 players, does 5 stepovers, lobs the ball in the air and bicycle kicks it in. Of course.

And what elite talent is available at the minute that we could get?

Lukaku is a proven premier league goalscorer and although isn't brilliant technically he knows how to find the back of the net. If he makes the switch these things can be worked on and improved, it's not like he's nearing the end of his career. He's coming into his prime and has outscored United forwards the last couple of seasons and has even had double figures for the 2 seasons before that. I do agree he's not on the same level as aguero or lewandowski I do think he will be a great signing for us.

Pros:
- There's no messing around in front of goal. He nails them.
- Great positioning makes him score more.
- Has played as link up striker and target man under Martinez
- Fits Mourinho's big target man philosophy very much
- If he nails the big chances Zlatan buried, he will get 20+
- Only 23

Cons:
- Can be marked out of a game
- Not scoring much against big teams (yet)

He's scored 85 goals in the EPL i think. Not bad for a young striker.

Infuriated by The Sun's 'Why Lukaku could be a flop at United' headline today. Bastards. I cannot wait to see him bang them in at OT.

Last season he scored against Shitty, Spurs and Arsenal. The season before he scored against Liverpool, Shitty and Chelsea (2 goals).

In terms of making the difference between last season's drawn games that we should have won Lukaku will I am sure make a difference, but I am not convinced it is a defining improvement.

The problem utd had last season (and no reason to think it will change) is teams parking the bus, Lukaku doesn't singlehandedly change our ability to get through teams.

It may be that with Lukaku in our formation will change, we will have more width, better crosses, less fannying around back and forth infront of the oposition box.

A welcome edition but I am not yet thinking his presence alone takes us to guaranteed top 4 and certainly not pushing for the title, we are still a striker light, even if Martial stays. SAF's golden years we always had 4 decent strikers, I just cannot move past that, cannot also help thinking that 4 strikers last season, or under LVG would have made a significant difffernce.

Lukaku - a big African RvN! Finally a target for our wingers to hit. Lovely. Then, love the goals he does against less teams. He just gets the ball and run it into the goal, like a true "baws"

On the more serious side, to have both Rashford and Lukaku to choose from up front is terrific. One big and strong and one more quick and agile. Now we only need a third backup.

A big plus in all of this is Rooney leaving. That salary!

To be fair, there are reasons for apprehensions for Lukaku but it's not like he is shit. And when the other option is Morata who himself isn't exactly the greatest cf in the land, I don't see how it changes much getting either. They are both overpriced and both have a lot to improve but at the same time is capable of producing the goods.

We signed Mkhitaryan before preseason even started yet it took him months to be 'ready'. We signed Pogba after the start of the season and he was 'ready' to play from the off.
