He wouldn’t if he was playing well.
That's simply not true. Not now anyway.

No matter what he does he will be critised for it. That's how far it's gone.
As a fan base I'd expect us to defend him. Not against any criticism of his performances but against the vile abuse he is receiving

Yes, I'm his mum. Great retort

The fact that you're resorting to such immature actions suggests to me that you know I'm right.

I'll say it again. Maguire is getting abuse for no other reason than it's popular to do so. Even when he plays well he gets abuse from his own fans. No player past or present could perform to a high standard in those conditions.
Harry Maguire + high standards =

Started the first two games of the season we were humiliated in both, the last 4 games hasn’t started and we have not only looked better but have won all 4. I get that people want him to succeed (I would live nothing more) but he isn’t up to standard as has been proven already this season.

Blames everyone else for his failings.

A captain who can”t lead, a coward who hides when we lose as refuses to do interviews. Never a United Captain.
So did Shaw and Fred but we're not seeing the same "look how much better we are without them" posts (also ignores that we've defended deeper and avoided playing out from the back since the first two games). Maybe it's not as fashionable to pile in on those two.

The hatred on here for a Man Utd player is just plain weird to be honest.
Bordering on obsessive
Strange bunch of “fans” on here
It’s weird isn’t it?

I get that he isn’t good enough - but it’s like some people have dreams and nightmares about this guy and all they do is speak about him every chance they get.

I find it a bit scary.

I mentioned it in the Van De Beek thread. The guy can’t play a single game of Maguire’s ability - yet all he gets is 3 posts a day and Maguire gets 200.

Madness and cringe the obsession with this guy. The same fans were doing it with Rashford during the summer and it has suddenly shat back at their face so they have to shut up.
I'm pretty sure the vast majority want rid and recognise it was one of our worst ever transfer deals, but there is a bizarre glee people take in even picking over his England performances. Even if he's ok in a game, this is only very begrudgingly admitted and with a side helping of abuse.
There's no doubt people get off on it, a kind of group mind thing.
Exactly. This guy gets more abuse than I’ve seen for a very long time. He gets it from every angle possible. He’s either got a very thick skin and doing ok or he goes home in bits with all the abuse he gets and puts on a brave face.

saying that I do think he needs to leave.. it’s not working for him here, don’t think he suits the PL but could see him smashing it a different league. Italy, Germany France even Spain.

harry maguire is a good footballer. I said it.
The abuse Maguire has received after the England game (mostly on social media) is evident that there is a clear witch-hunt against him. I’ve absolutely no idea why.
He was (not arguably, was) England’s best defender yesterday, despite Saka’s inability to track his runner leaving Maguire exposed time and time again. Who gets the blame for that? Maguire. It’s incredible really.

Never in my lifetime has one player received so much abuse. Its borderline criminal and as a fan base we are the worst for it. This is not the United I know. We shielded Beckham We shielded Ronaldo. We shielded Rooney. We shielded Ferdinand. We shielded Cantona. We shielded Rashford and Sancho. What do we do with Maguire? Abuse him, even when he’s played well. It’s pathetic.
Its about time we realised that Maguire is one of us, like it or not. One of our biggest traits as fans was looking after our own when they were down, where has that gone?. Yes, criticise his performance when he plays bad, when he played bad that is, not when he plays and plays well.
Good post. I'm far from his biggest fan footballing-wise, and I think he's simply not good enough for a club with ambitions as ours. That being said, the abuse and the hatred he gets is absolutely unreal and straight up bullying. Imagine being a family member of his, unable to browse Instagram or Facebook for 2 minutes without seeing a meme of him. It's even become a thing with people that don't care about football. They just decided to join in on the bullying for some reason, even though they don't even like football. It really is weird. If my brother or sister got the abuse he gets, my blood would be boiling and I would probably do something that'd put me in jail. Hopefully this will pass sooner rather than later.
Well said, it doesn't help there are big United fan channels which jump on negative topics surrounding him every time he does something wrong. He had a bad season, people made memes about every mistake he made, added alongside the price tag and now to prove you're a true united fan, you must deride and mock him and pray for his downfall at every turn. Sheeple mentality

I try not to even bother reading anything regarding Maguire anymore, as I know it's going to be the usual toxic, senseless and hyperbolic bile from calling him slabhead, sloth, a disgrace, worst captain in history, not fit to wear the shirt, get out of my club. I can't imagine what his family are going through and even Harry Maguire's mental health wellbeing. Too many people just see footballers as commodities and machines who should just get on with their job and not be affected by criticised or rather in this case abuse

I've seen Mason Greenwood get more support online after what he allegedly done and that's saying something.
Honestly this, its actually pathetic at this point.

If you don't like Maguire then you should be extremely happy right now because he doesn't play and doesn't look like he'll be getting his starting spot back anytime soon, if at all. Even before that article or his interview came out, you had a bunch of people piling on him when he was barely getting minutes.

For those who also don't like him as captain, Bruno has basically been the de facto captain so what is all the bitching about.

I absolutely detest Lindelof as a player and CB but I have no need to hurl abuse at him every moment because he isn't playing.

There were actually fans watching the England match waiting for every Maguire mistake to celebrate bashing him. Obsessive and weird and I'm not a fan of him at all. He's an average footballer not a war criminal.
It's fair if you don't want him to be a part of the club because you think he's not good enough. I agree.

But you can do that without spewing absolute vitriol at him.

It's not difficult to understand.

However, I don't see why his England performances are criticized.
The style suits him and he thrives in it.
He has been a solid feature for them
phew! Some actual good posts in here!

Has he? Or are you believing the reports that said he did? Mark Ogden I believe it was who reported this rumour using an unnamed source.
The same Mark Ogden who got banned from the press room by SAF.

Anyway. This is the last post I can post today.

It would change if he was putting in great performances, but he’s not, no where near.

On top of that he’s spent a large amount of time telling the media he’s great and his form his fine, then slagging off his team mates. I’ll also remind you that he’s the captain of Manchester United.

For his own good and our's he needs to leave asap. It's not going to work out and it's not going to get better. If he cost 30m and wasn't the captain he would never get this amount of hate.

If it wasn't true he could easily come out and rubbish it. Which he has done once before. His silence now paints a pretty clear picture.

He can't do anything right by a section of fans and I'm afraid your post is more of the same.

When Phil Jones, whose done nothing but collect a massive wage for three seasons, is being lauded over Maguire, who is almost always available, you know the rot amongst fans has set in.
I like how Maguire's defender have the exact same mindset as him, let's all blame other players instead. Maybe they just think like him, or may be...

I get that he isn’t good enough - but it’s like some people have dreams and nightmares about this guy and all they do is speak about him every chance they get.
Say the guy who is top poster on Ronaldo thread last season with ~100% negative post, and mention him negatively almost everywhere in the forum.

As a fan base I'd expect us to defend him. Not against any criticism of his performances but against the vile abuse he is receiving
As an United captain I'd expect him to defend and support his teammate, not throwing them under the bus to save himself.

By the way, here is the full talkSPORT interview which the "I went to the Euros after an eight-week injury and got into the team of the tournament." quote comes from:

"I am all good, ready to play, I feel fit and fresh.

On my form, I don’t know what has been said, I don’t really read about it.

I came off the back of three positive games with England in the summer, and a good pre-season, I felt really good.

Obviously, the manager [Erik ten Hag] decided to leave me out for a game, and the team have been winning since.

I am working hard on the training pitch to make sure I am ready for when my opportunity comes. That is all what I can do to try and help the team.

I am not concentrating on anybody else and what people are saying, I think if people can make a story about me, I am Manchester United captain, it is going to make big news

So, that is the reason they do it, they like the clicks, and things like that, but I went into the Euros after an eight-week injury, and did not play one game, and got into the team of the tournament.

In terms of rustiness, and things like that, I am sure that won’t happen.”

It is also worth adding that the original article about this Interview suggests he was asked about whether or not his club form will affect his standing for England.

As is usually the case with these "outrageous" quotes from players/managers, it's not nearly as outlandish when taken in context. I doubt it'll stop people from using this against him for the next six months, though.

Well obviously his comments and attitude would be scrutinised less if he wasn’t captain of the team.
If his performance’s were the same he would still be criticised like Lindelof & Baily have been who cost 30m

So if you criticise a professional footballer on obscene amounts of money a week, who is the captain of your club (and a poor one at that), who frequently delivers shite performances - it’s seen as you’re ‘doing it for clicks’.

What an arrogant muppet this guy is.

The first he had no control over whatsoever and the second few would turn down. Far, far better players tha him, eg Scholes, have not proven cut out to be captain.

Even with context they aren't exactly a good look on him. The 3 positive games, england failed to win any of them and failed to keep a cleansheet in 2 of the 3. He could have stopped after the try and help the team bit, but he can't help himself, he clearly wants to defend himself but is too much of a coward to state it outright fearing more criticism.

If and when he ups his game for United we'll get to test that theory. That would mean not only providing defensive solidity at the back, but also cutting out the silly mistakes, and moving the ball on a little quicker instead of slowing down the play. If he goes out there consistently putting on 7/8/9 out 10 performances there'll bit much less criticism.

I can't quite decide who's more deluded in this whole situation - Maguire who genuinely seems to believe he's actually a top 6 CB or the cult-like defenders on here, in the media and in the general football world who keep saying he's either not as bad or actually good despite all evidence to the contrary.

Absolute madness

Couldn't agree more. Even dragging his performances for a B-tier national side into it now.

I imagine he's referring to his own performance in those matches rather than the team as a whole (I can't remember how he played in any of them so I can't comment as to whether or not that's fair), and he was essentially asked to defend his inclusion in the England squad. In that context him being in the Euros team of the tournament is quite relevant.

My point is that when you take these quotes completely out of context, they do indeed make Maguire look like a bit of an arrogant plank. However, they appear far less bad when put next to the rest of the interview and the fact that the reporter had asked him to defend his inclusion in the England squad given his form at club level.

Pogba is not British though. Everyone knows that those usually get a free pass by pundits and most fans. So the abuse Maguire is getting is surprisingly high

I mean I sort of get it when he is roundly mocked and lambasted for pretty much everything he does, and any time people say that this is over the top you get 20 idiots saying the same old "Oh, so we can't even criticise him now?!" crap.

To be fair, Maguire does generally get off pretty easy with the pundits. He just gets an absolutely obscene level of abuse from fans.

The traditional English centre back is a tall guy who battles with the opponents tall guy and doesnt need to do anything else besides winning those headers and something put in a cunching tackle. When an English player also has a decent long ball he is quickly considered good with the ball/ball playing centre back. Maguire isnt the worst when he is on the ball but he isnt great on the ball either. He is just okay. Okay describes him best i think, when in good form he is an okay defender. Nothing special but acceptable.
Where are you getting this from or basing it on?

All this captain shit and 80 million shit is really desperate stuff to use as a stick to beat him with. First he didn't put that price tag over his head and secondly if he wasn't captain we not suddenly going to become a major force in football once again.

Ashley Young was captain ffs and he often put in dog shit performances.

The way I say from what he's said he is understanding that he is not in the starting line up and will work hard to earn his place. Him taking positives from his performances in the summer in the nations cup for England even though they lost I don't see what the problem is. Just because a team loses does not mean certain players didn't have good games.

I don't agree with the idea that we need to get a decent fee because of what we paid.

The money's gone, get what you can. If that means £20m, I'd look at that as an extra £20m for ETH to put towards next new player, than £60m lost.

He wasn't good enough previously, he's certainly not good enough for ETH style of play. Get rid, take the cash, lose the wages, move on.
Yeah, I agree with this but I get the feeling we don't want to admit what a financial mishap it was. It is more of a guess but I could be wrong.

I wonder if there's some sort of financial reason on paper where it makes more sense to keep him e.g. list him as an asset worth 50m rather than sell him for 20m cash. I'm sure one of the guys on here with understanding of corporate finances will be able to answer if that's at all a possibility.

If the alleged communication issues related to DDG were actually true, well, it should be just as true now. More so maybe now that we don't play with 3 English defenders. We have 2 French, 1 Portuguese and 1 Argentinian all with the same Spanish GK behind them. Last season we had 3 English defenders in the starting lineup.

This is a gross oversimplification. First up, we only have 1 French player, as Malacia is Dutch. However, in addition to that Argentina’s primary language is Spanish (also Dave’s primary language), the French player has been in Spain for a decade (speaking Dave’s primary language) and Portuguese is fairly similar to Spanish so that’s three of the back four that will be able to communicate in Dave’s primary language to a very good level. It’s not unthinkable that Dave has a tendency to struggle with translating his thoughts into English on pitch. I’m not saying it is the case, but it’s a potential source of misunderstanding with the English players.

If his interviews is anything to go buy Dave's English is very good.

I think the reasons Maguire more abuse than many deem appropriate are the following:

  • His fee
  • Becoming captain
  • Being deluded (see interviews or the finger in ear celebration)
  • Him being undroppable for so long
  • Being poor for the majority of his United career and shocking in plenty of games
  • Doing absolutely ridiculous things on an number of occasions e.g. taking out his own players
  • Hard to qualify this in text but his on field big time Charlie persona where he has to be the one to get on the ball (resulting in taking out his own teammates) and hanging onto the ball like he's about to go on a mazy run, only to just look silly.

Granted, some of these aren't his fault, but the combination of the above so consistently is why he gets the hate he does. A lot of players may have some of the above trait but he embodies all of them.
