With Rafa and Houllier they could attract players that we had no business attracting purely because they were here, with Rodgers we have no such tool at our disposal.
Yes, Rafa did attract such giants of the game. Josemi, Aurelio, El Zhar, Voronin, Insua, Babel and the like. I remember how fans of rival teams quivered in fear at those signings.

In fairness Rafa does have a good rep, he could definitely attract better players than Rodgers can, not that that means much of course.

As fun as it is to see them giving out about their transfer prospects, I'm not sure why this would come as a particularly big blow to them. They were never going to get Depay once we were interested given his previous ties to LVG, surely they knew that? Tbh not signing Depay is less embarrassing then actually believing they could get him with no CL in the first place...

As good as Memphis is or may possibly be, do Liverpool need another winger anyway? Sterling, Coutinho and Ibe are all solid. It's not a priority area to strengthen for them like it is for us, as we lack pace and directness from out wide.

Sterling, Coutinho and Depay behind a top quality striker could work really well.

Fair enough, but for me, the comparison is ridiculous. Back then, Liverpool would always make top 4. Now, it is much more of a rat race for the Champions League spots. Liverpool were part of those elite clubs talented players would go to even if they were managed by a relatively unknown manager. Now, unless we feck it up and they end the season in 4th,not so much.

This is spot-on. Their decline over the past 6/7 years is staggering. Now you mention it, I don't think any amount of Klopp's or Rafa's would actually be able to (currently) attract a higher caliber of player than someone like Balotelli who was their "big name" signing last summer.

When it was pointed out that yes, he did score in the World Cup against Australia and Chile.

I'm missing the part where Chile, who were the better team against Brazil in the Round of 16, have Championship rejects piled together.
Someone should tell him that we were doing pretty good against the dutch and Depay changed the game for them.

I can't quite understand why they seem so upset about Depay, I never thought they stood a chance, but reading some of their posts they are genuinely gutted about it.

More than missing out on Depay in particular, they seem frustrated they struggle to attract any big name talents now. Many of them seem really upset that they'll more than likely end up with Danny Ings.

Tbh, I thought they had him a couple of days ago when it was being reported that United had shown no interest. Then BOOM log in to the cafe just like any other day and there it is in the headlines! I like surprises like this :D

Honestly, he's quite good against the shit teams. I went to watch one of the Dutch top flight clubs in a friendly against an amateur side and apart from stamina you couldn't tell them apart.

Might be the case, Rodgers pretty much confirmed they were trying to get him though.

reply: How did it turn out? They went from 7th, 20 points behind us, into 4th. 4 points ahead of us - I'd say that was pretty good progress, and certainly a good step to be challenging again

What single player do you think could propel us into the Champions league places?

Liverpool can't rely on one player they need a team that is greater than the sum of their parts.

They've been scouting him for over a year, they got close with his agent and everything. They were one of the first to contact PSV after they became champion to inform about Memphis. He was their first target to score some goals, they could've used a freekick specialist like him with Gerrard leaving too.

But but but he liked our welcome to Liverpool comment on facebook. How could he lie like this? I went and got his name on my new home shirt.

They must know something about LvG being here, let alone other elements?

So much pessimism right off the bat.

"Why the **** would he come here anyway? Seriously ... what's the incentive?"

"We're gonna get Ayew instead. He's on a free.
Keen, free and nobody else really wants him.
Ticks all the boxes
."

"He's no Danny Ings, who is PL proven."
Cold, hard truth is dawning on them. They couldn't attract the top guns when they were in the CL. What hope do they have now?

Still laughing at Scousers.
I swear half of them must be secret United fans because some of that is hilarious beyond words.
Bizarre. Twenty six years ago they were the top of everything. Twenty five years ago they won the league for the last time. They used to boast how they had the magic to dominate. Now they just make endless bad decisions, buy crap players and look quite ridiculous. Even when they got into Europe they were pathetic. They used to call us a lesson in failure, they seem to have institutionalised failure.

I dont understand people who say they "support" more than one team.
I support United, and at best, there will be perhaps one or two teams that I dont mind watching ever year.

For Instance, Dortmund a couple of years ago were always a good watch, Bayern Munich when they won the treble, AC when they were doing well in Europe.

Entertaining to watch, but I couldnt give a rats ass what happens in the game.

Its a sure sign of a plastic the minute they start talking about "supporting" another big club, even worse if its in the same league.
I 'supported' Dortmund in a way as I wanted them to win and do well in Germany as I admired what they had achieved. I wouldn't call myself a fan though.

When it was pointed out that yes, he did score in the World Cup against Australia and Chile.

Agreed. Afaik, we'd been linked with him for ages and Liverpool only started to be mentioned fairly recently. Not to mention the Dutch management and players here that would make it a far easier transition.

The mood seems defeated

When you have big resources, it's not much of an issue wrapping up a deal.
And yet he's costing the same as we spent on Adam Lallana....
Did we actually go for him though?
Yes and Rodgers really wanted him.
Can't be arsed with this. We all know we will probably end up with Milner and Ings, then wonder why we miss out on champions league again.
The reason we didn't, and would never have signed him is because we're;

1. Not good enough
2. Too cheap.
3. Why would a top player/prospect come here? No Carragher, No Gerrard, No Suarez, Questions about the management. A 20 year old who wants out is seen as our best player.

Without the rose tinted glasses, there's nothing here.

Last summer was our big chance, and we resorted to signing a lot of rubbish for a big price. Classic Liverpool.
Good signing for them, the Babel comparisons were daft, this lad has far better close ball control. May not explode into life in his first season as he's still young and will be adapting to needing to perform week in week out in a tougher league, but in terms of their squad up top, his style and strengths definitely improve their options, sadly.

An excellent midfielder, strong composed centre back and a goal scoring striker, and them feckers wont be that far behind Chelsea.
Dutch Red....
Get in there. Honestly we've dodged one heck of a bullet. He'll do worse than Blind. If such a thing is possible.
Has to be tongue in cheek, I'm not a subscriber of the famous scouse humour so I may be wrong :)

Actually it wasn't....
He's a Dutch flat-track bully. Honestly, he's quite good against the shit teams. I went to watch one of the Dutch top flight clubs in a friendly against an amateur side and apart from stamina you couldn't tell them apart. He's nowhere in big games or in Europe so his statistics are vain and very flattering.

You know, Rodgers will find another way to spend his summer budget on someone useless because he's been spectacularly creative in doing so, but if he's going to do it he'd surely be able to at least find someone who's less of a twat than Depay.
There is shit and there is shit. At least Premier League shit teams have a style of play, albeit not the most sophisticated one
The Dutch league paints a very flattering picture for forwards. Some of them are the real deal: Suarez, Van Nistelrooy, Huntelaar, but then some of them aren't: De Jong, Castaignos, Alves, Babel. Depay will be in the last group. He looks good against teams that frankly are shite. Players like Suarez had shown they could cut it on high stages too(Champions League, World Cup, UEFA Cup).
Yeah, they're all looking miles ahead of us, aside from City who are rocky at the moment, but still. Sad times. No one from abroad wants to play for us, so we sign players from lower down the league, because they would jump at the chance.
Haha the meltdown from our fans on Twitter is priceless
hilarious isn't it?

You would have thought we'd just lost out on Messi the way some are reacting
It would be more understandable if we'd missed out on Messi
When he's tearing through the league next year you'll be wishing he was here.

But ah well I may aswell prepare myself for Milner and Ings.
It's not that though, how many times do we miss out on our number 1 target?
One thing I do like about this Summer's transfer's is that we look like we are more unconvincing with our approach at an earlier stage. Keep it up guys. I prefer the lethal injection as opposed to the crucifixion approach.
I love how they finished the whole transfer in just 24 hours.
There are good players though that would come to us. Sturridge and Coutinho were examples and they came from Chelsea and Inter, so big clubs. Kovacic who i don't know much about but sounds like in that type. Someone who is rated as talented but maybe not seen to be that great from other big clubs viewpoint.

Its just about finding them.
There's always hope when all else evades you.

Shame. We have no pull anymore.

Fluffed our big chance to truly be with the big boys last year.
I don't see a reversal unless some billionaire buys us, and pulls out the handbook on dodgy FFP practice
We won't sign anyone we want, but Klopp or Rafa would certainly attract better than Lallana and Lovren
We will get the players who the teams below us want .....those wanted by the teams above us will end up at the teams above us .....it's called ' pecking order ' .....it's where we are at unfortunately , until a mega rich owner comes along and is willing to throw money at anyone and anything, it will be no different......Brendan will have to see what comes available and hope that the bigger boys don't notice our interest until it's too late ....United will spend another shitload this summer, as will City and Chelsea , Arsenal are already more attractive than ourselves so our hope is that one of them has a poor season and we capitalise.....if they perform to par, we will remain where we are at present, fighting for the remainders with Spurs and the like
No reason to go into meltdown over losing a player to Manchester United.
We bully those below us with money and whatever prestige we have left, those above us bully us.
It is the way it is - they are a bigger pull in every possible way and they are flexing their muscles.

How is this news and why would anyone be surprised?
Do we really need him if Sterling is staying this summer?
Why the hell would we need a creative, explosive player who can take a mean freekick?
Seems like a waste of money and effort to me - we're all good.
seems like they are desperate to find the next Ronaldo lol

Can't keep up, the thread is going of the scale....sorry y'all that's all I can do....

I am pretty sure this was a tactic used by him and his agent to big up the links with us all to eventually embarass us. All obviously on advice from Utd who agreed to sign him months ago.
They just can't help themselves , conspiracies in their soup.
