Westminster Politics

Probably a silly question but with new accusations that he's been to other places, how are they verified?

There is eye witness accounts, one witness actually googled his number plate at the time. Also the police have now contradicted government line and said that they did speak to him.

This whole thing is so depressing. No chance he walks and no chance it effects the torys negatively. They are somehow untouchable.

Lies lies lies. The government is incompetent & morally corrupt. If you think their Covid response is bad, wait till Brexit is ‘finalized’.

It's the repetition that makes them untouchable, if things go unpunished enough then people stop expecting it.

You hold him to account now and then it just increases that expectation when the government next do something wrong.

If the papers keep pushing the stories he might get the boot if Tory MPs get sick of it dominating the news cycle. Lots of them already hate him.

What did Shapps do to deserve to be the whipping boy on this?

Shapps isn't cut from the same cloth as Boris, Mogg, Gove etc. He's the grammar school oik who will do anything to please his masters.
He's also more slippery than an otter's cock, just check out some of the shady shit he's got up to over the years.

It is no surprise that they have come out in his defense and have doubled down on the lies. Don't ever forget this is the same mob who lied about 350 million a week to the NHS, lied about Turkey joining the EU, lied about 'oven ready' trade deals, lied about German car manufacturing coming to a halt if UK left the EU, lied about border checks with Northern Ireland, as well as professing what a success they have made of handling the pandemic when they have over 35,000 corpses on their record. These people do not give a solitary feck about you and I as long as they're OK. Never lose sight of that fact when it comes to this current government.

Is part of this a retaliation from the press after the whole "banning certain journalists from briefings" fiasco where they all walked out before it began? Cumbreath (don't care how old I am, I'm sticking with it) must have been behind that decision.

There will be tons of MPs who will want the little cnut to go. He's an idiot who walks around likes he the boss and for sure that will have royally pissed off some of the longer serving MPs and PSs.

The current Tory leadership (guided by Cummings) have turned politics into a culture war in which their voters don’t care what they get up to provided they stick to core messages which feed the voter base prejudices.

Cummings might go but only because a significant number of Tory MPs can’t stand him. Not because of quaint notions like ethics or voter outrage.

If my bosses sent me out like this to clean up someone else's mess, I would think they have no respect for me.

Well it's a Guardian and Mirror story and they're left wing papers, so Cummings would be a prime target for them anyway. You've got to imagine that someone that dislikeable has made enemies in all quarters though. I'm sure there are plenty of Tory-aligned journalists, party members and civil servants quite happy to see him get a kicking.

You are right in a way. But I was thinking, a story like this does more damage than others because it is very easy to understand and it affects everyone. Everyone is sick and tired of the lockdown, so to hear some big wigs have been flouting it leaves a bad taste.

I mean because of the drip feeding that we're getting with the story. I like to think that deep down they're all thinking "this is our best chance yet to screw this turd over". Yeah I'd pay for a front row seat to see him getting pummelled by a Justice Horse.

100% personal for some journalists. I’m sure they’ve had some horrible experiences dealing with him.

I think the hard-core brexit bunch such as bone, Baker and Frank mancois etc are scared that when faced with the economic reality of a hard brexit and the potential that this might hurt election prospects that somebody like cummings might prioritise electability over flag waving and xenophobia... dont think they want to risk that

What election prospects, its five years until another GE?

The UK will have been out of the EU for the best part of five years, there is a good chance that with no Brexit bone to chew on, then Bone (forgive the pun), Baker, et al could already be gone from the Tories, their political life's work completed. Doesn't look as though Cummings will be around that long either, he's got them elected, he's now becoming a liability and either he and/or his Boss will probably go before the next GE.

Don't forget the Tories see themselves as the natural party of Power... and there is a good reason for that!

The mirror played a blinder here with their two part story. Not only did they ensure Cummings was properly caught out but they also made the entire cabinet look like absolute mugs in the process. Some serious political capital lost here.

Well we do follow them with a 10 or so year lag in most things I guess.
But does anyone really believe this will have any impact on Tory voters, particularly given most will read about it on the BBC or DM, Tel etc...

You are right, the Brexit battle-ground in the UK changed all that, "I'm, right you're wrong .. oh and you are also an idiot for not seeing I'm am right" is the sentiments pertaining to most political dialogue in the US and here as well. It was hoped by many that one positive coming out of the pandemic, is that people will be kinder to one another... and they may well do so, but inside politics its still the 'one-up-man-ship' game.
All this sniping at opposition figures, about rule breaking etc. when as any politician ever believed ,really believed the rules apply to them? The political figures in and around Parliament, during Brexit and now even in a pandemic situation only see what they want to see, hear what they want to hear. One side is now entrenched in power for five years, the other main opposition hasn't a hope in hell of achieving anything in the next five years except to harass the Government, both are #'electorate free zones' for the next five years.

Did the bastard even have the virus at all, or was it just an excuse to feck off on a jolly?

Admittedly I didn't care much for it until the virtual format was introduced. It's so much more productive and watchable without the childish booing and heckling over ministers raising important questions. I'll be sad to see it go back to normal.

On YouGov's polls, it truly baffles me that people would still vote Conservative. They may not be watching PMQ's but the media is certainly not giving them an easy ride on the way they have handled this situation.

Are you fcuking kidding?

Peter Bone calling for Cummings to go. Sir Keir still waiting for focus group approval.
Perhaps Labours focus group can hire cummings
After all he's not a member of any political party... show himself to be pretty good at winning votes and looks like he might be available soon
Plus the meltdown it would trigger would be epic

Sir Keir isn't a danger to public health. Being one of those would require doing something.

I don't think he actually needs to do anything here. The Tory party are doing a great job of hitting the self destruct button on this one.
