I think it's because he has scored some goals playing further forward. I agree with you though, he is missing a lot of what is needed to be a striker. He's fairly good at everything but i really struggle to think of anything he stands out at.
He is never going to have great technique but it shouldn't stop him from being a fantastic footballer. I look at Mbappe and don't think he's supremely talented with the ball at his feet either. What Rashford needs to learn is how to use is pace to make runs into dangerous areas. I'm still hopeful that improves with time. His touch needs to be better as well. Doesn't have to be Isco but just good enough to give him space to beat his marker.

He is a frustrating player to watch. Too many simple things he fails to do properly, which is a worry. People should tone down a little bit though, he is a 20 year old kid and will have days off, let's hope it's just one of those games when nothing comes off for you.

In his first season as the striker under LVG he played pretty well, would've taken that ball into his stride yesterday then I think. I don't think him playing as a wide forward is helping, he's played his whole career as a striker, which is a different skillset to a winger. And now he'll struggle to go back to being a striker as he's had 2 seasons of being a wide player now.

He seems to have a bad game every time he plays these days. I just don’t think he’s very good.
Meh, we're only a few games into the season and he was playing well at Burnley before he came off.
People can be a bit reactionary on here even if we win, he will have a good season, needs to up his goal tally though.

As harsh as it may seem, he seems in line to follow in Welbeck's footsteps. I honestly don't remember a single impressive performance from him since his debut season. No offence to him, but he doesn't seem to have the intelligence to play at such a level.

It's simple the same people were calling Luke Shaw over the last 2 years!
Young players need to play. Both Martial and Rashford were trying too hard in the first half. We need a good run in all competitions to play 60 games to give all these players a run of games were they can run into form. Fred and Pereira were also trying too hard because the squad looks very deep right now especially in Midfield.
His decline felt more mental than anything else. Rashford, in my opinion, has very little footballing intelligence which he demonstrates by making incorrect decisions at key times.

I'm wondering if lukaku was stuck out on the wing would he do any better than rashford? I think he should be judged on how he performs as a striker rather than keep being put out on the wings.

But he wasn’t very good last season either. He just has a bit of the headless chicken about him, although I do think part of that is being played out wide. To me he’s a goal scorer and should only be played as a centre forward.

Jose will never use him as a striker because he likes his defenders and DDG to always use that long ball into CF option if nothing else is on, and Rashford cant header the ball and he simply isn’t strong enough to hold the ball up.

I didn't see the England games, did he actually play well for England or is it just that he scored a couple of goals people (pundits) were going mental over him?

Wow ...Don't sit on the fence, he was exceprtonal in all the youth teams I watched live and it was his football intelligence that alerted LVG and Ryan Giggs were he mostly played as the second striker who drifted wide. I believe he starred in a European under 18 Champions League game which proved this point.

However because he's so keen to make a statement, he tries far too hard to do something brilliant as did Martial as well in the first half. I remember a raw Memphis who also frustrated the F...out of me but at 24 he seems to be coming good and caused City all sorts of problems yesterday. Yes I would have him back rather than a 30 year old fading Alexis.

Jose seems to like 433 which is more like a 4213 with Pogba being given a free role. He also looks like he encouraged the front 3 to interchange positions in a fluid front 3. It wasn't brilliant on a tricky pitch but we should at least try this again in a few more games with 2 young mobile Wing backs. I was pleasantly suprised yesterday but admit Rashford was average at best but was Mbappe any better for PSG against Liverpool.

No doubt PSG will now be open to loan deals for Mbappe after an average game!!!!

Rashford is a quality player, his pace with the ball is astounding. The problem is his decision making for that final ball/shot. He seems to get to the box and then get overwhelmed with the options of what to do - pass, shot, hold and he takes so long to decide what to do the opportunity has passed, or he just plain picks the wrong one.

Unfortunately I think that can only improve through regular match time, but we're currently in a position where we can't afford to give him match time where we may not win, we're not good enough to carry a player currently, this board will go in to meltdown if we lose match again.

Thought a loan for him as a ridiculous idea and mocked posters for suggesting it.
The most worrying thing about him is that he doesn't even look like he is improving any aspects of his game. He needs a good coach and a situation where he consistently plays even when he's shit. We have good coaches but the competition means we don't have the time.
He and Martial have pace but their problem with movements are quite different. Martial doesn't want to run without the ball unless he is cajoled. Rashford runs around a lot but his runs don't threaten.
He has to continue to be a sub player where he can learn against tired defences. He's nowhere near good enough to start for us. Lingard at the moment is a much better player.
We really don't do we? Who was the last player from the academy with good touch, technique and passing?

Not many players have made the jump so there is too small a pool to choose from. And you've also misunderstood me. I mean first team coaches.

It's been months, maybe even years, not days. And it's not like he has got no chances to prove himself. He even got a run of games as striker when Lukaku was injured at the end of last season. However he was just as bad as on the wing. 5 odd goals per season without contributing anything on other areas while playing in his position is just nowhere near good enough if we want to win anything.

Europa league goal vs Anderlecht, Liverpool goals. That's about it

Even they have hardly improved any players have they? None of our young players have taken the next step forward in Mourinho's term.

He can't play as a winger. Especially under Jose. He has to play exactly where he plays for England - upfront in a two striker system. That's it.

The truth is, he is not good enough. I think people just got carried away by him being English, young and from the academy which totally escalated the hype. The thing is he is severely limited both on the ball and off the ball, both of which he has proved perpetually.
I think he's just another who got extremely lucky and was at the right place at the right time. Nothing to see here tbh

Marcus Rashford | 2016/17 Performances

Said a while back that the lad is really struggling with the development of his 'football brain' and in terms of naturally just being able to coherently combine all the separate elements of what makes a successful footballer.. he certainly is nowhere close to the likes of Mbappe, let alone those comparisons to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo.

His best asset was his attitude and even that is raising doubts - he's made the fatal flaw of believing he's a huge technical talent rather than realising he's the type of footballer who needs to work damn hard in order to become a top class footballer. The sending off offence was not something Marcus would have done when first breaking through.

On the flip side, watching him for England, there are glimpses of a good footballer in there. Playing as a second striker, roaming around and just being able to do what he wants to do by instinct rather than having to follow strict tactical instructions seemed to suit him at this moment in time. He's clearly not ready to be a centre-forward and Lukaku for all the stick he gets has proven that he definitely deserves to be our number one forward. He doesn't have the physique or nous to play up front on his own. He lacks the willingness to play out wide, as more ego creeps into his game.. the less willing he is to be a provider.

Bottom line is, unlike Martial who IMO has been unfairly treated by Jose and unfortunately currently picks and chooses when he performs... Rashford has pretty much been supported to the hilt. So now it is down to him to knuckle down and rediscover what made him perform above and beyond his natural ability, understand his own limitations and work within those for the betterment of the team. If he feels that he needs to leave, or go on loan so be it but that fundamental issue of knowing his own game, his own strengths and flaws... needs to happen otherwise he'll end up as one of those angry young men who don't reach their potential and blaming others for his own lack of progress. At the moment, would you argue that he's a significantly better footballer than someone like Richarlison? He needs to be aware that if he wasn't playing at United, he might have to go midtable or below to even guarantee himself a starting spot elsewhere.

Lingard
McTominay
Pereira

Should perhaps add Shaw as well
That list shows how awful our coaches have been. McTominay hasn't improved at all(and he hardly ever plays anyway). Pereira has been on loan and I don't think he will get a look in either with Fred here. Lingard is still erratic as ever, only difference is that he is playing continuously in a position he likes.

Your initial argument was that no player had taken 'the next step forward' under Mourinho. These obviously have done so. They have all evolved significantly under his tenure.

But poor games are a rarity for Mbappe. They're not for Rashford. In fact, he's poor a lot more often than not and that's true for the last couple of years at that.

Absolutely, people were making excuses that was down to his confidence but completely ignored his selfishness of his game, which is more apparent this season.

Someone should really start talking to him because he thinks he's won it now but he sort of fell asleep and thinks he's a great palyer which he can be but only in flashes. Keep it simple rashy at times work hard, so many sloppy things in his game, too laid back, think he caught martials syndrome. The problem is he should be playing from the left where we have to play Sanchez, none of the three martial sanchez rashford are really good there so whenever rashford plays there it will not look totally great but play sanchez/martial on the right and marcus on the left and he will look class above them.

Young player so has plenty of time but needs to be looked at

I beg to differ having been to most home games in the last 3 years, yes he's frustrating but he scored big goals already in his career and not yet 21 plus Mbappe has the support of not just his club and national coach but the whole country as well!

One bad game and some frustrating link up play early in the season and the whole Forum want to either sell or him or send him out on loan.

What's his record for goals scored against the top 6 or in European Club Semi Finals.

I can remember him scoring 2 against Arsenal, the winner against City where he sat their defence on their a....!, destroying Chelsea at Old Trafford, embarrassing Liverpool last season and that free kick in Europa League SF. He's not yet 21 how many times as Lukalu been the match winner against Elite teams, once, twice and he's 5 years old.

Let the Boy develop and please can we allow this thread to jog on. United Fans should always support their own youth players.

That was very annoying. He was clean through on goal if he had taken it in his stride. Just lacks a bit of finesse sometimes. Someone should tell him to stop rushing and play with his head more because he has the pace to kill any defender.

You've made that up, it's a flat out lie.

Rashford played behind the striker in his youth days and has spent more time as a wide player than a striker in his senior days.

Lots of energy, lots of bluster, not much of an end product if any at all. £60m should be getting us more than this, to be honest. I said before, he seems like a mild upgrade on Herrera (who is a good player). But for the price, you want a real change-maker in midfield and he just seems like a water carrier...….at present. Maybe he'll improve, but he isn't striking me as a game changer - he's not gonna score, he's not gonna assist. I like the look of him in general, good attitude and a good addition to the squad but again, I dont think he seems a good buy so far. For what he seems to be bringing to the table, a £20-25m Championship home-grown midfielder might have brought the same traits and for half the price.

More than happy ot be proven wrong, of course.

Still early days plus all Club accounts and Wikpedia quote £47 million transfer fee which I'm more inclined to believe than Sky Sports.

However I do agree that he currently looks a £20 to 25M mid table PL player. He's neat and tidy, gets round the pitch but gives the ball away too easily and I'm still waiting to see if he has the killer pass in the final third and whether he's a goal threat.

Yet Fred is not in the 18-21 bracket like Dalot, Rashford, Angel Gomez, Taith Chong, Mason Greenwood who all need time to develop. Hopefully he will come good as he settles!

Rashford ?
Ahhhh, wrong thread, was supposed to be in the Fred thread!

Rashford - simply not convinced he's anywhere near as good as made out. Cannot even do the simple things. He's fast and a tidy finisher if given a few chances, that's it.
