I like these quotes. Some people will dismiss it as weak, but its just honest. It's easy to talk yourself up, easy to say you always give your all no matter what, but we all know that isn't true. We know players lose rhythm and confidence if they are put of favour, we know players get frustrated with managers who muck them around. Lying and saying otherwise is simply for PR.

I just hope Martial can build upon this reflection, and I hope ETH can understand Martial's personality and motivate him, earn his commitment. Some players can go through bad spells and then it all clicks in their late 20s, others can't pull it back and their performances drop further and further. Martial and United can still work together to aim for the former.

Found it a bit hypocritical that he agreed he was 20 and young and yet implied he should have dibs on a shirt number over Zlatan

Martial and Bailly = same old shit; excuses, excuses excuses.

Come on. Maybe he didn’t bring us forward, but to claim he set the club back is a fare fetched. Think you forget how the situation was.

Both Ole and Mourinho in the end lost the players, and the reason becomes more and more clear these days. TOO MANY PLAYERS THOUGHT TO HIGLY ABOUT THEMSELVES (lacked self insight).

Both Bailly and Martial have been seen through lately, and we can probably add Pogba and Lingard.

Luckily this group of knots is broken up, and the manager can now start to build a team.
With Bailly it was an excuse because he was actually reckless and made of glass. Martial pretty much confirms most of what we suspected. The shirt number debacle affected him, as well as no longer being the main man, and playing while not fully fit. (also funny that we don't hear any apologies from the people who relentlessly attacked him at the time, and shot down anyone who suggested he might be still carrying a knock)

Martial's second season fell off a cliff after an impressive debut because of Mourinho's management. Ole got the best out of him again but failed him in the end when he didn't immediately put him back into the squad, though he himself was already under pressure at the time.

Also strange that people ignore the LVG comments (doesn't fit their agenda?). Probably our best manager post SAF and it was a big mistake to sack him when he was building something, and then the 2nd biggest mistake was appointing Mourinho. Martial really had ballon d'or potential at one point, but his career ended up getting stunted badly.

It's not about having dibs on a shirt number. It was his number. He was given the #9. He was our best player that season with that number. Mourinho comes and asks him to change number because somebody else is coming, he says no thanks he wants to keep it, Mourinho changes it anyway? Nah. That's not cool. As a manager he threw Martial aside right away. Martial still played well under Mourinho that season anyway, but it was the repeated events that started like that from day one

Funny that ten hag sees Martial as a key player then?

Martial has every right to defend himself. Just like Rashford does. They had great seasons in 19/20, but were forced to play through every single knock, every injury, and were managed horribly. This led to much bigger injuries that hurt them for longer. It needed surgeries to now fix. This meant they missed a lot more time. And Ole then discarded Martial essentially after he abused him the year before instead of just managing him properly. It's just shit man management.

Martial is honest in his interview and gives fair criticisms of himself. But he states how he was clearly treated under Mourinho and Ole. Ole and Mourinho lost the players not because the players thought too highly about themselves. They lost the players because they as managers thought too highly about themselves. That's why Ole won't get a premier league level job for a long time, and Mourinho is now at lowly Roma with nobody bigger wanting to take a chance on him anymore.

None of us know the goings on between player and manager/s. However I'm leaning towards Martials version, based on what was said or written at various times.

We had the Rashford back situation and the Pogba surgery issue under Ole. Both times the player got stick. Rashford because Ole said he wanted to play and Pogba because he opted for surgery.

Martial didn't say anything initially. But when he went on loan his club and the player said he couldn't play because of an older injury that hadn't been sorted properly. He then played but something reoccurred again an older injury issue.

Now I don't know if Pogbas current injury is linked to his ankle surgery but he did come back sooner than indicated.

Lindelof is also a player that played through injury.

All adds up for me
Good point actually, Rashford himself said he wanted to play and was desperate to play, as shown by the healing device he carried around. He was our best player at the time so it was understandable. Yet people here would have you believe that Ole got out his whip and forced the boy.

I have sympathy for injuries hampering his ability to perform at his best, and I think he does give 100% most of the time despite the body language.

However, the shirt number sulking is where my sympathy ends. This was a 20 year old, still proving himself. Worrying about what number you "deserve" to wear should be low down on the priority list when you're trying to break into the big time. Ibra had a stellar career and was rightly going to be the number 1 striker at the club, and so Mou was correct to let the number 9 go to him. That Martial took offence to this exemplifies the entitlement players have taken on at Man Utd this last decade, and the scale of the task ahead.

Its always the last managers fault with this lot.

Martial would do well to get fit, regain his place in the squad and perform for more than a season before he's starts bad mouthing previous managers.

He did say that he told Ole that he was injured but Ole told him that he is needed. Ole should have come out and said that Martial had an injury but is playing. I am now not sure about the Rashford situation too.

Serious:eek: Nothing wrong with your fantasy though:D

Usually it’s the opposite.

Manager: Are you fit for fight?

Player: Yes of course!

Manager to Physio: Is the player ready for action: will the niggle hold him back or get worse?

Physio: tumb up or tumb down.

Manager: Follows the physio’s advice, but may give a shit if we are talking about CL final or very critical match.
I'm old enough to remember SAF getting Rooney to play 45 min against Bayern in the 2nd leg of CL quarter with an injection after he injured his metatarsal in the 1st leg. Then he was out for weeks after that and we lost the league by a point + him being shit for England in the 2010 WC. Or Mourinho very public record of getting his players to play through niggles.

At the end of the day, managers are by and large short termist and absolutely do take detrimental course of action for the players if it means they get the results they desire.

If shirt number don’t mean anything why doesn’t the new guy take another number why disturb the balance for what ?

Good interview we rarely hear anything from the guy himself he’s not one of them social media players. Seems like a sincere interview ventilating sort of.

Hopefully he’s ready to go soon that France spot is not getting closer while being injured.

This.

He doesn't have enough credit in the bank to be mouthing off at previous managers. He's a fecking professional. Losing his fav number should not affect his performance but it did. That's just plain embarrassing on his part. Really lacks self-awareness.

At that time at point in his career, shirt number should be the least of his concern. He was still young at that time, only into 2nd season at United when Zlatan came with all his experienced, he should be learning a thing or two from him, not sulking about his shirt number. He was given 11, an iconic number too, not some random 34, 35.
Even if he upset i get it, but that should not came in expense of his performanced. Why he didnt just outperformed Ibra in every chances possible? That could also be a kind of respond too, why sulking out of all choice? That was weak mentality there.

At £250k/week, feck the number or excuses. Just perform.

Thing is, he did perform. He was constantly scoring or getting assists and having a very good impact from the bench. Had a very short leash though and would be back on the bench after 1 bad game. And then when he picked up form again the following season... We went after Sanchez. Who played like shit, time and again, but kept playing ahead of Martial.

So he has a problem because MOU didn’t play him and he has a problem because Ole played him ? Off course Ole is not going to come out and say that Martial had covid 6 months ago and can’t run but I still have to play him because I don’t have another striker. What nonsense. What about the poor performances at Sevilla even before the injury

Too much sun plus he played as a '22' on his back --- so you should know that he cant perform under those difficult or near impossible conditions. Have some empathy.

Its just too much to expect a man who is paid to perform on a mere £250k/week.

Just read his interview, shame on Ole for forcing him play with injury and then not standing up for him
Not sure about this. If it's one of those things players often play through then he needs to toughen up. If it's a big mistake that slowed down Martial and Rashford then it's unforgivable from the then management.

But I'm not knowledgeable enough to know.

I like these quotes.
Partly yes. I do like that he's clearly disappointed with himself too. Just depends if the Ole injury stuff is genuine or excuses. But otherwise he seems self aware in the rest of the quotes. I agree about the emotion part - fist pumping and drama isnt the only way to care or be a leader.

I'd love to hear from the physios. I remember Smalling also played through injuries and Mourinho even repeatedly questioned the players. Quotes like this make you wonder:

This abrasive style of management has become a regular theme at Old Trafford this season, as Luke Shaw, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Anthony Martial and a few others can testify, but it was still unusual to hear a manager question the commitment of two players who had the backing of the club’s medical staff and see how aggrieved Mourinho was that Jones, for example, had decided it was out of the question to try to run off a broken toe.

Smalling’s healing process has not been accelerated by Mourinho’s public challenges either and it did not need long in the manager’s company to understand what he made of it. Indeed, there was enough disdain in his voice to merit a follow-up question about whether it might actually persuade him to move out the players in question. Could he, after all, trust two centre‑backs when he had openly questioned their bravery?

He rejected that one but, clearly aggrieved, he also said it was a wider issue for United than merely Smalling and Jones. “It’s not just about them,” he explained. “It’s about the philosophy and mentality around them.”

Asked to elaborate, he chose three words – “cautious, cautious, cautious” – and when he was asked to clarify who, besides the relevant players, he was meaning (the suspicion being it was their agents and possibly some of the medical staff) he hinted again at a culture he did not like. “Cautious … just a cautious approach. It’s a profile, it’s the philosophy of work; just that.”

Mourinho had already stated that Smalling and Jones needed to show more courage, arguing that Marcos Rojo’s ruptured knee ligaments meant it was time “to be brave – to [take a] risk – because for the team you have to do everything”, as well as provocatively insisting that were it himself carrying the same injuries, he would have played through the pain.

It was some statement when Smalling, to put it into context, was wearing a knee brace a week ago but Mourinho’s response was withering again when he was asked whether he suspected the modern-day player was not willing to put his body on the line. “Professional football at a high level – yes.”

Given the results, it's pretty clear which of the 2 it was. Rashford had a spinal stress fracture and then half a season later played through a shoulder injury that he needed surgery for in the summer where he missed 3 months of 21/22.
Martial in 20/21 missed the final third of the season with a ruptured knee ligament injury, and then in 21/22 kept getting the soft tissue injuries, a clear sign he didn't recover properly.

Did he?
in 16/17, he played 2515 mins with G/A 8/8, so G/A every 157 mins or so
in 17/18, he played 2334 mins with G/A at 11/9, G/A every 117 mins or so
That was not bad for a supersub role but not that very good either if he was a starting XI. But then, many of them so up and down during Mou's. It kind of worked with rotation between him and Rashford back then up untill Sanchez came of course.

The greatest player of all time, Messi, wears 30 at PSG. Of course shirt numbers matter if you take it away because a shiny, new toy has arrived at the club. And the way Ibrahimovic announced it himself on social media was disrespectful. It would have never happened under Fergie.

Speaking of Fergie, I don't remember if these frequent player intereviews happened during his time. EtH probably needs to ban them unless he has a say over the Q&As. Why wash the club's dirty laundry in public? Martial's treatment by the previous management deserves criticism, but it should ideally be dealt with internally by the current management. United need to go back to the silent ship it used to be.

As for Ole, his fans need to accept that he was a disaster for the club. The list of baffling decisions he made will never cease to amaze. Bought and regularly played somebody like Daniel James, even in a game only days before he was going to leave and when everybody knew he was going to leave. Gave the captaincy to Maguire six months into his United career. Gave a new contract to Jones etc. etc.

Ole did play players with injuries. He brought back Maguire when he was no where fit. Also, How can anyone forget the EL final against Villareal when Rashford was absolutely dead on his feet, couldn’t even run properly yet Ole kept him on for the whole 120 minutes.

I get a feeling that if Ole wasn’t a club legend we would hear a lot more how he completely mismanaged players and ran some of them into the ground.

I down hate him, just dont rate him. He has generally been woeful for us. A few good games in pre season doesnt change that.

He averages what, 8 goals a season? Yet he is our savior?
You heard what the guy said. He's never really had a good run in the team.

Martial's problem was not that he played him through injury, he said he was happy to do that. It was the lack of support afterwards. From his quotes, he never held the playing through injuries against him, just that he wasn't at his best and felt the fans were on his back a bit.

Just shut up and start showing you care and tries on the pitch

Even Sevilla shunted you for poor effort.

Talk is cheap. Damn i wish he just feck off instead of stinking this place with next year is my year bullshit.

You give 100% everytime you play. It's that simple.

My word the Ole witch hunt is never gonna end on here. The moment something negative about him is uttered, no evidence is needed to crucify him
Then lets put it to an end once and for all. Put him on a scale with a duck, if he weighs the same as a duck that means he's made of wood therefore he is a witch.

OLE should have let him recover. I am sure Martial has a lot of blame on himself as well but Ole playing both Rashford and Martial through injuries has hampered their progress with us I feel. Even if the players themselves wanted to play through the pain, the club should have stepped in and got them fully fit before letting them play.

I hate Martial fc but I swear the cult of Ole is the most horrendous thing to ever happen to the fanbase. Worse than Rabies.
There was never a cult of Ole. Most of the posters who were fine with Ole, supported him because they wanted to get behind the manager, the club and players because they could see the progress being made. We were frustrated for some of the decisions Ole made but overall, we stood behind him as what a supporter should do.

The "cult" happened when tons of negative posters who believe that Ole should not be hired and always bashed him at every single opportunity (even during victories these posters will come up with some sort of excuse to bash him), simply because he was a manager who did not have a style of play that these posters preferred. At some point, it became every unbearable to the extent that we had no choice but to come out and be the voice of reason. Unfortunately, you guys were so stubborn about Ole being the worst manager of all time, that all of us got branded as his "cult" members.

Unsurprisingly, some of you have already started to bash ETH because the team is not playing a easy-on-the-eye style of play. My only advice to you lot is to be a supporter of this club, you are supporting it through victories, draws and defeats regardless of how the result is achieved. It is fine to voice out frustrations, but you must always support with the belief that the team will achieve. If you guys are only interested in dominating football which makes you win every game 4-0, I suggest you go play FIFA. We need fans here, not stock market investors who feel aggrieved that success is not yet achieved.
